He's making lather the wrong way (too dry), holding the razor at the wrong angle (too steep, will not slide but cut into the flesh).. if this was real, the boy would be dead.
And yes, I shave with a straight razor every day.
He teaches him how to shave," I said. Then, in an instant, Michael knew it was true.
And it was his decision to use a straight razor. I argued against it and I was wrong. It was a stroke of genius on Michael's part. I wasn't on the set and the first time I saw the scene was in the theater.
You want to hear the dialogue that was deleted from that scene?
That scene evolved in an interesting way. One day Michael Cuesta called me on the phone after reading my latest script rewrite and said. "They're not bonding enough--what would bond them--how would they bond? Meaning Howie and John. How does a man bond with a boy?" Michael's son was only about two years old at the time, mine were already in their thirties.
@cyberplan03 in thought you were him, i read stephen ryders interview at the time this movie came out and he is a most intelligent balanced individuall, he basically said which is true that millions of men and teenage boys throughout history have been in loving and commited relationships, and he just wanted to write something that reflecetd this reality.
You see, Howard--you and Cyrano are much alike. But since you have a cute little nose...(he tweaks Howie's nose)...that can't be it. You're different in other ways. You're like a diamond in a coal bin. (A beat) So it follows that you must become a great swordsman--so no one will trifle with you.
Big John: "You know, there's a book, Cyrano De Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand. It's a story about a guy with an exaggerated proboscis--a real long one. That nose was a metaphor, an insignia of his inescapable 'differentness.' Isolated from society at large, he compensated for his sense of inferiority by becoming the finest swordsman in all of France. And a rapier wit, to boot!" (A beat)
this is the scene where big john starts to feel fatherly towards howie and realises that he loves and cares about this boy paternally rather than sexually. its unique in that its the first time in his life that john has looked on a boy without thinking of him in a sexual way this movie is about two men finding their way in the world the first is a 15 year old boy growing into manhood and the second is a 50 something man who is learning to be a better person through his caring for howie
@44madhatter Lol...you sound so naive. Big John is a pederast. He has feelings for Howie, but they will manifest into his uncontrollable urge to have sex with boys. You think there's a happy ending here? Big John will adopt Howie and be the strong father he needs? LOL. Look at what happenrd with Scotty. A boy who grew into a man.....most likely came from the same situation as Howie. Now he's too old, and Big John needs a new boy. Scotty knew this. Why do you think he kills Big John at the end?
@redjac666 if you seen the movie you will know that big john refused howies sexual advances. he wont cross the line with this boy because he feels genuine love towards him. his paternal feelings over rides his sexual feelings.
@hargohargo I did see the movie. How do you think I know how it ends? If you think Big John will never have sex with Howie, you're just as niave as the last guy. Like I said before, it probably started out the same way with Scotty.....loving paternal feelings at first, then a destuctive and ultimately deadly relationship. Maybe we see the movie differently. You see a pederast and a depressed boy living happily ever after. I see a vulerable, negelected kid being taken advantage of by a predator.
does anybody know of a sequel to this movie? in my opinion, the ending definatly provokes one, which is why im asking. it doesnt tell what happens to Howie after so and so dies (dont wanna spoil the movie :)) and Gary, what happens with him at his destination?
Fuck?! You mean like RAPE?! Haven't seen the movie, but It looks good. I was on the edge of my seat watching this too. I thought he was going to get cut.

Got to disagree, Maikschoene. To make this scene at least somewhat authentic, the director should have at least got someone to teach the guy how to use a straight razor. He's holding it at 90 deg. to the face! That is not only incredibly dangerous, but the way he's scraping at the foam is silly - in that fashion, you could never shave that way. Now, maybe this scene is ritualistic or symbolic (I haven't seen the film) but as a S.R. shaver, it's annoying. View my videos for a proper S.R. shave.
I believe that John was simply trying to satisfy the boy's urge to feel more adult-like and shave, therefore holding it at a 90-degree angle would be just as appropriate. Also,I believe Maik means how the actors are acting as they would if this wasn't a set,not that he was shaving him...authentically :)
If the intent was to deliver a symbolic shave, he should have done it with a safety razor that held no cartridge or something.
Trust me. Or try touching and scraping cream off of your own face and throat with a straight razor held perpendicular to your skin. When you get out of the hospital you can then log on and tell me I was right to criticize. :) (But seriously, do not do as the old man in the video does.)
Well, looks like he knew what he was doing since there were know gaping cuts on Howie's face now, were there?Regardless of what COULD have happened,it's what actually happened that counts.
I think you're over-reacting a little bit yelling about things that didn't happen.
If he had been cut during the movie, then props to you.But he wasn't,so as far as I'm concerned,he knew what he was doing and the chance of an accident was less then 10%.In other words,it wasn't going to happen :)
I'm just saying, there's a right way and a wrong way to do things. They chose the wrong way.
Although they edited out the takes where the KID was spurting blood from his throat, similarly horrific scenes have resulted in people's homes after seeing the above film and attempting to shave in this fashion. Don't you read the papers?!
No need to tell me to shut up...I thought you were 18 or something, didn't know you were only a baby...never mind then, you obviously have no experience.
I'm fairly sure, in this case, there isn't a "right" and "wrong" way. Because, in your eyes, our ancestors were doing it wrong for A LONG TIME!
Just because he did it that way doesn't make it wrong, because he obviously knew what he was doing. Now if he was making the KID shave his own face, THEN it'd be the wrong way.
hey is it possible for u (or anyone who has this film) to upload some other scenes? im having trouble finding it and wanna see it..would be greatly appreciated but only if u can.
