"They're not bonding enough--what would bond them--how would they bond? Meaning Howie and John. How does a man bond with a boy?" Michael's son was only about two years old at the time, mine were already in their thirties.

this is the scene where big john starts to feel fatherly towards howie and realises that he loves and cares about this boy paternally rather than sexually. its unique in that its the first time in his life that john has looked on a boy without thinking of him in a sexual way this movie is about two men finding their way in the world the first is a 15 year old boy growing into manhood and the second is a 50 something man who is learning to be a better person through his caring for howie

@hargohargo I did see the movie. How do you think I know how it ends? If you think Big John will never have sex with Howie, you're just as niave as the last guy. Like I said before, it probably started out the same way with Scotty.....loving paternal feelings at first, then a destuctive and ultimately deadly relationship. Maybe we see the movie differently. You see a pederast and a depressed boy living happily ever after. I see a vulerable, negelected kid being taken advantage of by a predator.

Got to disagree, Maikschoene. To make this scene at least somewhat authentic, the director should have at least got someone to teach the guy how to use a straight razor. He's holding it at 90 deg. to the face! That is not only incredibly dangerous, but the way he's scraping at the foam is silly - in that fashion, you could never shave that way. Now, maybe this scene is ritualistic or symbolic (I haven't seen the film) but as a S.R. shaver, it's annoying. View my videos for a proper S.R. shave.

I believe that John was simply trying to satisfy the boy's urge to feel more adult-like and shave,therefore holding it at a 90-degree angle would be just as appropriate.Also,I believe Maik means how the actors are acting as they would if this wasn't a set,not that he was shaving him...authentically :)

If the intent was to deliver a symbolic shave, he should have done it with a safety razor that held no cartridge or something.

Well,looks like he knew what he was doing since there were know gaping cuts on Howie's face now,were there?Regardless of what COULD have happened,it's what actually happened that counts.

I think you're over-reacting a little bit yelling about things that didn't happen.

If he had been cut during the movie,then props to you.But he wasn't,so as far as I'm concerned,he knew what he was doing and the chance of an accident was less then 10%.In other words,it wasn't going to happen :)
