We took 4 words from Celtic over 600 from Norman french but there still remains 300,000+ Anglo-Saxon words so where does 50% come from? Latin and Italian are in fact two different languages! Old Italian derives from Vulgar Latin 1500 years ago and it's not so different than modern Italian. English is probably the "newest" language on Earth.
I do know language evolution can't be pinned down to one 'main' language evolving into the next, it's the influence of major dialects throughout periods, and historical/economic importance of regions.
If you take a closer look at English and Italian and compare it to Old English (which is very similar to Old Dutch btw) and Latin, imo you can't speak of a completely different language. It just evolved and absorbed other influences - as does every tongue.
let's put it this way, my grandfather and I are two different persons. while baby me and me are the same person! Latin and Italian are different languages. it is easier for an Italian to translate English rather than Latin.

the biggest obstacle in understanding spoken English for non-English speakers is the "accent". I remember the first time I went to England my English flatmate had to repeat the word "nice" 25 times before I could recognize it. Spanish, Italian and even German phonology r quite simple, while the English phonology is one of the vastest: amazingly the number of phonemes in English are even a matter of dispute! 18 to 27 vowels. (5 only in Spanish) + consonants.
it would be interesting to test some English (only) speaking people and see if they can translate better German or Italian with the use of a dictionary.

I do know language evolution can't be pinned down to one 'main' language evolving into the next, it's the influence of major dialects throughout periods, and historical/economic importance of regions.
If you take a closer look at English and Italian and compare it to Old English (which is very similar to Old Dutch btw) and Latin, imo you can't speak of a completely different language. It just evolved and absorbed other influences - as does every tongue.

the biggest obstacle in understanding spoken English for non-English speakers is the "accent". I remember the first time I went to England my English flatmate had to repeat the word "nice" 25 times before I could recognize it. Spanish, Italian and even German phonology r quite simple, while the English phonology is one of the vastest: amazingly the number of phonemes in English are even a matter of dispute! 18 to 27 vowels. (5 only in Spanish) + consonants.

Also, red hair as an indication of Celtic descent is utter rubbish. Red hair is to be found everywhere in the northern hemisphere. I have met a lot of red haired Norwegians, Germans and Belgians (the former two you wouldn't think of as 'Celtic')

My main point is though: to distinguish between 'germanic' and 'celtic' is mostly a linguistic matter, not a matter of genes or appearance. To the Romans we were all pretty much the same anyway.

Germanic languagesare horrible for the ear. The dogs barking sound more harmonious. English is a Germanic language at first. Now is a mestizo language, full of Latin and French words, which gives it a sweeter tone than the other Germanic languages.

We made huge advances in metallurgy, mathematics, astronomy, and the natural sciences. With all due respect, you Europeans aren't exactly number one, whether Germanic or Mediterranean.

Thanks to that America was discovered. @XxpauldadudexX Believe it or not, I agree with you there. And FYI: Hong Kong, where I live, is distinctly different from the rest of China, especially rural areas in the mainland. However: I can tell you, based on personal experience travelling throughout "Westernized Asia", that it isn't much different from China, when you leave the showpiece places and get down to the local nitty-gritty. Neither is America so clean. Europe; depends. Nothing beats Vancouver though!

No, Brits are a mix of Celts + lots of Saxons(Holstein) and ANGLEs (Southern Denmark (Slesvig), where there is still a peninsula called Angeln, just South of the present day (!) Danish-German border ) as well as Jutes (Jutland, Denmark), Frisians, Dutch, Flamish, Danes ( LOTS! - the E are "spare Danes" to a large extent ;-) - very evident in the languages ), Norwegians, Icelanders - and probably even a few Southern Swedes (Geats or "Göter") here and there as well ;-)

Even today (!) E is still a fairly simple language for us in Scandinavia to pick up, since the
basic grammar is very similar (apart from all the -ing and do-stuff ;-) ) and lots
of basic words are very similar, as soon as you beging to see through the different
traditions of spelling.
