Grand National, under Edward L. Alperson, managed to stay afloat longer than most "Poverty Row" studios because of the success of their shoestring "B-westerns"- and having James Cagney star on two pictures for them, in 1936 and '37, was a plus as well. But Cagney returned to Warner Bros. in 1938, and the studio soon fell into bankruptcy, folding for good by early 1940.
