You can take as many acting lessons as you like, but you simply can't be tought acting such as that which Bob Hoskins delivers in that final scene. You either have it or you don't.
This definitely one of the best films of a genre… up there with ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Godfather’. Hoskin’s role as Shand was so successful that it has been said that the Krays sent him a message congratulating him on his performance as a British gangster! He also delivers one of my favourite insults in this scene: ‘Shut up, you long streak of paralysed piss!’ At ‘Stony03’, good one for uploading this, it’s a classic scene!
We're looking for people who can contribute to what England has given the world: culture, genius, sophistication. Bit more than an 'ot dog, know what I mean?
What happened to the British Film Industry? Why don't we make films about ourselves like the Yanks, Aussies and Frogs* do: about our history? Where are we, ffs?
My favourite film. No "Gangland" british film has matched it since. Bob Hoskins' tour-de-force. According to director John Mackenzie, Harold is a Capitalist Thug who gets what he deserves. However, it's great to see all these frightfully worthy socialist actors, writers, directors, etc.., doing so well out of the "nasty capitalist" film business.
@chelseaboy123ful Jeez, Don't you wish they'd made a sequel? According to Director John Mackenzie; "In my mind, I'd killed him".... but I like to think that Harold would've survived, and totally f****d the system.
@tonystower yes i do i felt so sorry for harold every thing was going so well until that skinny little bastard went behind his back and dealt with the ira brave man at the end shock surprise accepts he,s dead.
@thebthatwasp Oh dear, you seem to be rather dim. Director John Mackenzie and writer Barrie Keeffe have both made it clear that the film is highly political, with a strong anti-capitalist message, intended to generate discussion. It's fair-game for political comment, from either Left or Right. So in one short statement, you managed to be ill-informed, and resorted to a "fucking" and a "cunt". You're really not doing very well, are you...? At least we agree it is a brilliant film, real classic.
@thebthatwasp Hmmm no reply. I suppose it's similar to giving a cow some grass over a farm gate; they look at you, like they want to say something, but you realise there will not be a response. Or maybe an inbred dog, chained to a stake in the middle of a yard; Lots of barking, lots of agression, but no actual intelligence...
Five dislikes? To be honest, I though there were far more cretins than that out and about. One of the best endings to a film. You won't find this recommended in any screenwriting books, and you can't copy it. Awesome.
Just saw this film for the first time the other day and had to go back to it. Simply amazing. @topshot2219 Try Let Him Have It, The Football Factory, The Business, Goodbye Charlie Bright (which I have posted on here), McVicar, Nil by Mouth, Love, Honour and Obey there's loads mate
@topshot2219 "I'll sleep when im dead" (it is a bit boring that one. But it shows a cool looking clive owen walking around grimey london streets giving people a slap). Gangster number one (probably one of the most underated british gangster movies ever. An epic performance from paul bettany and andy Mcdowell. True essence of londons 60's gangland. But shows great imagination and vitality and culture with watching paul bettany go from zero to londons top crime lord
@wimblewomble21 It was Malcom McDowell. Andie is a woman! And Gangster No1 was gash! terrible acting from both ppl thaying the main guy, awful script. Only decent bit was when he was chopping the dude up in the hotel room.
@matthewtuckey lol fair enough. But most of britains gangster films are fucking gash. They are usually full of wee neds in baggy umbro tracksuits doing bad crip walks, and talking pish while smoking joints. I think guy richey has made the same film about 3 times, but just given them different titles, and changed the nationallities of the bad guys.
@wimblewomble21 Yeah Guy Ritchie obviously set out to make Pulp Fiction in London with a load of cockneys, thought of an end twist and just filled in all the gaps. Mona Lisa (also with Hoskins), however, is good. Get Carter makes the mark too. Can't really think of any others! Anyone?
@matthewtuckey i suppose the italian job, escape to victory and the great escape could be worthy contenders. Don't think we could class the escape films as gangster flicks. But the story lines are good
@topshot2219 Another good one is called "The big man". It is a bit of a depressing film. But it shows a classic Liam Neeson as a glasgow street fighter who has to fight for local crime lords in order to make ends meat. Neeson ends up getting into a little bit out of his depth ,& so he has to find ways of escaping the attention of the glasgow crime lords who have taken a shine to him. The film also stars Billy Connelly, & is one of Hugh Grants first ever films. excuse grants bad scots accent tho!
@BadJamHistory3 The Dunkirk spirit refers to the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of France, June 1940, when thousands were carried back to Britain by a flotilla of around 700 merchant marine boats, fishing boats, pleasure craft and lifeboats whose civilian crews were called into service for the emergency.
@melvert33 Yeah Wikepedia rocks. He is asking where's Victoria, the other character in the movie, she was supposed to be in the car but is kidnapped as well. Hold up where's victoorr = hold on wheres victoria?
Being American, I didn't understand half the words said in this movie. Be that as it may, I think it was fantastic! Bob Hoskins is the only person who has ever made me wish I was British :)
Just got a few snaps of Bob (will upload to my flickr soon). Bob will always be the NO.1 British gangster in my opinion,in this fantastic film. AAAAAA+++++
If you wanna get political about it, in a way America actually repaid the complement, given the vast sums of money flooding in from influential Irish-American sympathisers to support the IRA cause. On Question Time, Michael Heseltine debunked the 'Special Relationship' by talking about how minister after minister begged them to stop.
@hearts76100 Sorry mate but I see you start your sentence with 'I'm Scottish'. Does that mean normally you hate any English actor because they are English? If so thats bollocks mate
this film is the bomb! it even predicted the docklands would be revamped. Bob Hoskins rules.
watching films like this and scenes like this is why i went into film making. i am trying to emulate the greats. no point in making movies for making movies sake.
it's a bout leaving legacies, breaking and reshaping moulds. in that final scene hoskins face is a picture that will live with me forever.
i'm doing my own films now. if you want to view my trailers press my link. please leave a comment.
THE greatest British gangster movie ever! The last, wordless scene with Bob Hoskins is amazing -- no wonder this flick made his career, as well as that of Helen Mirren.
@wheelygood9 Maybe not in this fictional film but in reality the ira's 'campaing of terror' was as frightening as a episode of RentaGhost mate!!! England triumphs !!!
@kamelion7 : I assumed allsorts until Mackenzie confirmed "Harold is dead" etc in the film commentry and still refuse to believe it. Hand-Made films didn't half make some top films: Nuns on the run, Mona Lisa, Lock-Stock etc Though always regarded this as a "What happens to Jack Burton" type film...Keeps guessing. As it's a film the only triumph's (imo) would be Colin, Jeff & Harris getting what they deserve & the whole soundtrack. Ps: IRA type films - The Crying Game was pretty decent.
@Cardiff67235 I agree totally. Hand Made Films did knock out some classics. Of the ones you mentioned Mona Lisa and Nuns on the Run are particular favourites of mine!!!
@kamelion7 : Can't fault it ;...Got 1st comment other way round tbh (sorry)
Been catching up 1-3 series of The Bill/Casualty & ftr shows what a great actor D.Thompson is + plenty of future film villains eg: Bricktop who's in this. All he says though is ***T.
Fekiramic. Brian de palma saw this and instantly asked hoskins to play al Capone in his film the untouchables if de Niro turned it down.recognition I think!!
Hoskins Face Speaks a thousand Words, That Last Shot Is almost Painful to Watch....He know's that he's going to Die but takes It like a Man. I Hope they Show this Scene In Drama lessons today Because some Of these So Called "Actors" around Nowadays are a Poor excuse.
It is the Christian Easter story in reverse. Harold Shand rises from the underworld to the respectable business world on the Friday and then is crucified at the end of the film. The reverse of Jesus.
I call upon everyone to send this video to everyone they know attaching save our cadbury! lets send kraft (those yanks) a message lets shit 'em. "y'know a touch of the dunkirk spirit!"
A king once had a dream
Barrack thought he could
I have a dream... that we can... and will save OUR CADBURY a British institution from the abyss!!!!
@daehllaw According to the director's commentary on the Special Edition DVD of the film, the director John Mackenzie mentions that the was toying with the idea of a sequel after the film's success, but he decided against it, as he considered the film's conclusion to be the end of the story, full stop.
I think it comes from the idea that people can get their confidence from drink. Danish courage. Sorry, Dutch courage. People accused Churchill of getting his nerve that way.
"A little bit more than a hot dog, know what I mean?" Great line.

I thought this film was corny when it first came out.
It certainly hasn't matured very well.
Bob Hoskins is about as sinister as packet of puffed wheat.

Anyone have any idea on what he's thinking in the last scene as the Pierce Brosnan character holds the gun on him?
Alexisme1001 2 years ago
anger, fear, acceptance
Daytripper2212 1 year ago 2
He's probably thinking "Brosnan? I fackin' shit 'im!"
jimboloony321 1 year ago
Probably the most overlooked gangster film ever made.

It is the Christian Easter story in reverse. Harold Shand rises from the underworld to the respectable business world on the Friday and then is crucified at the end of the film. The reverse of Jesus.

One of the best endings ever! Wish they would have made a sequel for Harold, but I don't think it would have worked. Some things are best left alone.
"A sleeping partner's one thing but your in a fucking coma!"
CLASSIC!
daehllaw 2 years ago
@daehllaw According to the director's commentary on the Special Edition DVD of the film, the director John Mackenzie mentions that the was toying with the idea of a sequel after the film's success, but he decided against it, as he considered the film's conclusion to be the end of the story, full stop.

This is such a good scene. He really is a stubborn little man. And the Americans do have a point - this isn't your average gangland fracas.

what does he mean'' they don't lose their bottle?
alexthem123 2 years ago
Its Cockney rhyming slang. Means that they don't lose their nerve, basically they don't shit themselves with fear when shit hits the fan.
nasribb 2 years ago
I think it comes from the idea that people can get their confidence from drink. Danish courage. Sorry, Dutch courage. People accused Churchill of getting his nerve that way.
"A little bit more than a hot dog, know what I mean?" Great line.
Lebearblanc 2 years ago
They don't lose there bottle, is like saying they don't lose there nerve/courage.
Basically they stay calm when the shite hits the fan.
