ive been watching your japanese lessons and they're very informative. you're a great teacher! my goal for 2009 is to learn japanese so i can have conversations. :)
And if I advice more, you say negative form: I do NOT have party... in the sense, You generally need to say "wa" instead of "Ga". ex, Party "wa" Arimasenn. However, you wanna emphasize "Not", you can use "Ga" for it. ex, Party "ga" Arimasenn.
I've got a question, probably a really stupid one!
It's about the difference between です and あります. From what I've been reading です is a contraction of であります. But I can't find any explanation of the difference, the overlap between them. Can you help?
Ah OK, so it's a bit like comparing the English "it is" and "it's". They both have the same general meaning but the former sounds a bit unnatural in normal speech unless a point is being emphasised.
This wasn't even mentioned in my books; time for me to look for another, more detailed one. :o)

Ok!
であります=です+あります=>Strong Statement form of です
You do not use であります in daily conversation.
であります tend to be used for really formal situation..Speech, meeting, and so on.
So, if you use it for the conversation, it will sound weird.

Another excellent lesson!
I was a bit surprised that を wasn't used with いる/ある until I realised that there isn't really an object for existence - so が makes sense.
There are exception for inanimate things controlled by people aren't there?
So an empty car is あります but one being driven is います。 Is this correct?

Yes.
Kuruma ga arimasu.
Kuruma ga/wa unden sarete imasu.
but, in this case, imasu is present continuous tense = ~ing
Unten sareru = passive=be driven
Unten sareteimasu = Passive+ present continuous tense = being driven
Have a good one!

Thank you for the lesson. So use wa when talking about the subject in general and ga when wanting to place emphasis on the subject.
