Hmm idk why but i dont have the same as you but i think i kow the problem. some of us havent windows in english or we arent english so that speech thingy dosent support our langish. i think!!

I can't get the regognition tab to show and I tried the Language settings > details thing and the preferences won't let me hit language bar. what do I do? can I download something?

Hi, in control panel I have speech icon, but when I open it, it is not the same as yours. it only shows 'text to speech' and 'other' in that tab it shows SAPI4 control panel, which has a speech training. But no other applicable functions. So how do I get Speech to text engines for XP Home? Thanks, Dave

Nice tutorial. I can't get the recognition thing under CONTROL PANEL > SPEECH and also I cannot get it in the language bar, but I can do training... What gives?

Give this a try:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options.

2. On the Languages tab, under Text services and input languages, click Details.

3. Under Preferences, click Language Bar.

4. Select the Show the Language bar on the desktop check box.

OK, I am in the control Panel, I double clicked on speech, and the only tab there is, is Text To Speech, not speech recognition. I have Windows Xp Professorial and a headset and microphone. What am I missing?

Nope. You just need a mic and Windows XP. Just go Start > control panel > speech, to get it set up. Let me know how it goes for you. :)
