It's not damaging--it's making a stencil to put between the heating element and the bread to burn the image onto the bread.

Might cause damage to the toaster, though, if the heat gets reflected onto parts that weren't meant to absorb that much heat.

But then that's a small price to pay for yukkuri toast... :D
