This is the Jolley & Swain remix that was released in the UK only. I think it's better than the album mix. In the UK however, this song did not hit - #79. :( And only #60 R&B in the the US - it missed the Hot 100 completely.
@wonderboyjoy it is a great album ,the cover i don,t really have an opinion on! i did however like the cover of her 1980 classic diana where she has tight jeans and a white shirt on very sexy!!
They played the single version of this song on the radio in late evening for about 2 weeks but it quickly faded away. It never really had a chance. Great song. Thanks for posting the rarely heard remix of this one.
Diana Ross has got to be one of the most versatile singers ever. Despite the fact that her range is limited and her voice isn't as strong as some Black singers that are praised for their ability to overpower and whale like those church choir lead vocalists you hear on Sundays (at least their reason for doing so is to make sure all of us can hear God's message, I guess) Miss Ross' voice by nature is much more gentle and appeals to audiences all over. That along with her other accomplishments
in film, television, and even Broadway to a lesser extent. (This is in reference to her being awarded with a special Tony once for her Broadway-like show, "An Evening with Diana Ross") Perhaps these are the reasons why she has been compared to the likes of another superstar diva, Barbra Streisand. Streisand may have sold more albums, won more awards, but here is where she trails behind Ross. Diana has proven effective in a wide range of diverse music, from pop, ballads, Broadway tunes, jazz,
disco, country even (Last Time I Saw Him), blues, r&b, and even rock as heard here on this track. This was a track produced and arranged by Ray Parker, Jr. who isn't traditionally rock n' roll and thus also showing his versality here. The style of this tune usually is associated with the likes of vocalists such as Pat Benatar. One would never expect Ross to pull something like this off and do it so well. But a few measures from the intro, Ross' voice takes over like a pleasant surprise.
You instantly recognize that that is Diana Ross as she is not trying to impersonate anyone, she's tackling rock music, a genre we all expect she is unfamiliar with, yet she does just fine. Its as if she's welcoming Rock and Roll to Diana Ross, not the other way around. Wow! Imagine Streisand with this track... ugh... I don't think so. Streisand's versatility can only go as far as "Stoney End", which didn't even sound like rock music, and one of my guilty pleasures, "Enough Is Enough" when
Streisand was forced to go with the times and so she ventured into disco with a duet w/ the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer. When comparing Ross with Streisand, many will give Streisand the upper hand due to all the awards she's won and how Streisand is more of the trailblazer, since she had established herself both as a solo vocalist and actress long before Ross left the Supremes and "Lady Sings the Blues". Plus the fact that during the Supremes days, Berry Gordy had Diana record several covers
of Broadway classical tunes that were Streisand-esque in an effort to gain wider appeal to White audiences. Ross' versatility also enabled her to cover various other artists' signature songs and at her Vegas shows, Ross would include a segment where she'd sing covers of others like Streisand. So it may seem like Diana was following Barbra's path and never the other way around. Well, not so as in the case during the disco era. Diana was ahead then when she crossed over with Love Hangover,
Barbra's disco duet hit came after. Though it went to #1, that song did not turn into a signature song of Barbra's, as many have described her doing disco as laughable, whereas Diana venturing into disco with Love Hangover seemed very natural. And now with this tune, Diana Ross' delivery doesn't seem the least bit out of place. She's Diana Ross, the boss! And no blazing sounds of electric guitars or drums can stop her.
This was the one of many Jams off the Ross CD. Nice remix. The original really had it together as well. Diana and Ray made it happen. She said it best, "Get it straight Up Front".
I love this song and the remix is great! I don't know why it flopped. I wish I could get the remix in CD quality, I only have the album version on CD.
I LOVE this song for sooooooooooo many different reasons,, u gotta get it straight tell each other what u want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
