  • german grip

  • Thank you kabasak. Yeah, Mike uses his larger muscles to go faster and avoid injury.

  • Wow. This is just called a rebound stroke. Nothing special.

  • this is barely a beginners level of finger control ... i bet his left hand is even worse and i am confident he cannot put them together .... this sucks

  • Hey adminnm2112,Mike Mangini IN HIS OWN WORDS,(check Modern Drummer Festival 2006),says his does not use fingers for WDF competitions, but wrists.(even though it seems like he uses fingers).

  • uuh, clean your fingers dude!

  • This is actually a very good video; great technique.

  • this video sucks, i like the way jojo mayer explains this shit,,,

  • @nanopola ... yeah totally ...not only that , but this guy`s technique is at best beginner level , at worst just plain bad .... you notice how the stick is bouncing around uncontrollably ...also , he never shows his left hand , i bet he cant get any rebound with it

  • the push pull usually requires the thumb on top not on the side like u got it

  • omg... you suck.

  • this is scheisse

  • you dont use your fingers its the wrist the fingers just help. keep your pinky on that stick!

  • Nope! Sorry....No Fingers = No Speed! In fact the wrist only helps out!

  • this is a great technique if u only plan on playing about 10 years... usings fingers too much is the main cause of carpol tunnel for drummers, as well as bad grip technique. Mike Mangini's technique is all based around building the muscle memory of wrist motion, and hes yet to be beat.

  • Sorry, but that´s not true! Simply not true! I´m playing for more than 16 Years now and professional since more than 5 Years. Every (!) Teacher i ever heard ) including people like Steve Gadd, Wolfgang Haffner, Vinnie Colaiuta, Billy Cobham etc. etc. will tell you to include your Fingers into your playing. Using only the Wrist will cause it to tighten up and a natural playing-flow is not possible anymore!

Do your Homework and then try to teach again!!!

  • lol ok man

im well aware that all of those drummers do that, however. mike mangini DOES NOT. mike mangini DOES NOT HAVE TENDINITOUS(sp) ISSUES. i know this because i am his student. he also doesnt use the traditional wrist method either. what happens is when people use all wrist alot of times they tighten then grip around the fulcrum. mike specifically does not do this, watch his hands. you have to leave a gap there between your thumb and pointer finger. this way you use the bigger muscles in..

  • ..in your hand rather than the smaller, and more easily damadged muscles in your fingers. you can say what you want about mike's playing, but to be the fastest drummer in the world, while still able to acheive good sound for long periods of time, and have no tendinitous issues is a feat in itself. using fingers like the person is in this video is extremely dangerous. i dont care what steve gadd told you look at the facts. ask a doctor.

i know what im talking about

  • its also worth it to point out mike uses a completely different method for the WFD stuff, which is based on mastering the twitching motion tho specifically how its done is not something ive dove into yet. i just know that its true.

  • um, drummeric33, the technique in this video is the kind of technique that is recommended everywhere from professional drummers. I play the Scottish snare drum, and there are very old professionals that teach that technique, and at their age, i haven't seen any of them develop tendinitis, because the finger technique is not dangerous, its the least stressful technique on the body known. i know of this "twitching motion". its not a real technique, and a terrible way to drum consistently.

  • we are talking about WFD lol

this technique will destroy you if you try to compete in WFD with it. the twitching is the most effective for this obviously, as the record holder uses it. yesss i know this isnt real drumming, but thats not what we are talking about.

and on all levels, the finger technique is bad. but no need to argue, well just agree to disagree

  • yes i agree

the first thing i learned is to use the fingers for fast beats on the hihat...

sry for my band english :D

  • mike mangini doesnt use fingers

  • WFD finger technique. That's when you give WFD the middle finger for imposing ridiculous rules on it's contenders like not allowing them to use their own double bass pedals or compound techniques like the push-pull which actually eliminates any chance that the real fastest drummers can get recognition from them.

  • Yeah, I can play that fast using my wrist muscles. It has been done by drumlines for a long time. The thing is that when you use fingers and not wrist, you get a weaker sound than when you use wrist. Push pull=drop catch. Same thing.

  • Looks good, but... sound and video seems not in good synch

  • go buy yourself a good cam.. or stop trying! and go practice too.

  • i got 1,048 singles by combining wrist and fingers. abit like mangini. but hey the mans a freak i tried studying his technique and only he knows how to master it

  • man did you use the ''push pull'' techniquie or doubles i call it. just using both hands and putting them between each other? like a 4 stroke rough ... if you know what i mean.. and also how effective do you think this is on the kit oppose to the mangini tech..?

  • i hardly use push n pull, i know what you mean by it yes, i jsut use fingers and use my wrists to control the consistency. manginis technique is only effecticve for him, me and you can try to play like him but we will fail, we all have our own natural way

  • He uses his wrists, otherwise it'd be impossible for him to have set the bare hand record at 1100+

  • he doesnt use that technique

  • lol :P

  • He does not use his fingers, as Chazardx said, he twitches.

  • First of all Mike Mangini uses his fingers and secondly if you want to go as fast as Mike you have to use your 3 fingers and focus especially to your little finger because this is the one that is going to give you the strenght to push.

  • no your wrong yeah uses a twitching type method... he explains this on modern drummer fest. 2006

  • Agree, Mike only uses index finger and thumb, let's the rest of the fingers hangs..

    Amazing dvd the modern drummer!

But this video is pretty neat too :)

It's all bout finding a way wich is the easyest for you.

  • how do you develop that technique, like practice techniques?

  • Mike definitely uses his wrist for the WFD stuff. Also the fulcrum he uses and what you should use is first joint of first finger and thumb. When using a finger technique, you use that fulcrum and all other fingers are used. Do not use the grip in the video. You need a gap between your thumb and hand, otherwise you tighten up and stress tendons.

  • mike kinda vibrates his hands causing the stick to rise about an inch off the pad. It sounds like a buzzroll.

  • Mike uses isometrics BUT he can also use his fingers.

    Tim Waterson

  • what are isometrics?

  • Is this teacher a WFD guy, because I was told by a WFD ref that push pull was illegal. Also there are many styles. How about Matt Smith? He's all wrist with a single thumb controlling trad grip. Much different than this and pretty freaky.

  • actually Mike is using only wrists,it`s not finger technique

  • Sure, try to do it with your wrists -_-

  • Hey, it's true. It just takes is a looot of practice.

  • Dude, it's not human to do it just with your wrists only..

It's a full finger motion or a wrist and finger motion. There is NO way that you can do it with only wrists. If you had looked to his record on WFD you should see that he uses a combination of wrist and finger.

  • he is my drum teacher at berklee......actually when he is doing the WFD he does all wrist using his twitch fibers....so in reality he is actually twitching really fast...when he plays on a drumset he plays the technique that feels most comfortable at the moment but 100% of the time he has all fingers on the drumstick and his palms down.....he stick is basically an extension of the hand......

  • Same here as Chazard18x, what he says is exactly what mike does. it's all wrist action. If you don't believe us then you'll just have to track Mike down and have him show you.
