  • Oh hai Watson I'm just casually strolling back in here. Hug teim now!?

  • I just never get tired of this episode, this scene up till Watson faints, no matter how many times I watch

  • I love how Holmes is like; "I'm back. HUG TIMES NOW, YES?"

  • I love the fainting scene, it's hilarious!

Holmes:Hey, mind if I smoke in your office? *holds out arms for a bro hug*

    Waston:WTFHELLNAWSAYWHAT?!!! *faints*

    Holmes:O_____O Didn't see that coming...

  • How many here wants to see Martin Freeman faint upon his Sherlocks return? and then beat the shit out of Sherlock when he wakes up.

... some-how that is strangely in the Freeman Watson character and would be highly realistic..

Oh well, if he doesn't faint, I can just watch this over and over :D

  • @MoonPhantom Yeah, I really want Watson to faint, punch Sherlock, but then they hug it out. I am trying to picture Sherlock showing real emotion and finding it difficult...

  • I can just watch this over, and over, and over... I love it. Jeremy Brett was brilliant as Sherlock Holmes. It is an unspeakable tragedy that he passed away so young, and before the series was completed. Almost 20 years later and I'm still grieving.

  • Holmes always surprised Watson on the cases he solved and other tricks he had up his sleeve. Him fainting just made up for lost time. :D

  • I love, love, LOVE how they cleverly focused the camera so to give us a glimpse of Holmes disrobing in the reflection of the bookcase door. Even though it only lasts a second, the tension in that moment makes me bite my lip every time!

  • I love how Sherlock just waltzed in like 'oh this is gonna be so good. I faked my death and my best friend has been alone for three years. BEST. PRANK. EVAR. Oh, hey bro! It's me! Sherlo- OH CRAP HE'S FAINTED I DID NOT FORSEE THIS'

  • Just been reminded, he was the E4 man until he died. Now, that voice is everywhere. A strange phenomenon to have been so little-known as an actor, yet so ubiquitous as a voice, even after death! Pick it up at 2.52.

  • Colonel Moran is played by Patrick Allen whose voice has become THE voice. He has narrated many films and telly shows, serious and tongue-in-cheek and, since his death, has attracted a thousand imitators.

  • I really hope Sherlock will see a third season. Can't wait to see how they will try to overtop this one! Might be difficult...

  • I just love how dramatic Holmes is. He makes me smile :)

  • THIS is how you adapt Holmes and Watson for the screen.

The best version ever - Brett IS Sherlock - he lived it, he breathed it, and died for it.

    RIP Jeremy.

  • 7:45 Holmes stretching never fails to induce a considerable amount of giggling 8D

  • god that judge is stressy :P

  • I love how Sherlock is all chill. 'Hey Watson, mind if I light one up?"

  • My favorite scene ever:

    Sherlock: Hi Watson, I'm back

    Watson: /faints/

I laugh so hard everytime :)

  • I loved the reunion scene. The best part was when Holmes was hesitating to tell Watson about what had happened to him and Watson said that he was all right now.

  • 8:18 "HA!" Amazing :)

  • as soon as I saw the eyes I knew it was him and I read the book :) Might I add that the part when Holmes reviles himself to Watson is almost word for word whats in the book.

  • I love that whole snippet when Holmes changes from an old man back to himself, then holds out his arms for a hug. Then Watson faints.

    :D

  • @39ocean He's not asking for a hug. That's Holmesish for "look at me I am wonderful/brilliant/the best thing since sliced bread".

    Worship and obey, fools!

  • whenever i read the books i ALWAYS read them in jeremy 's voive and see his reaction

    HOLMES sqee

  • Heh, I'm just watching this to see Watson faint. And because of the wonders of modern technology, I can watch it again, again, and again.

  • ow ! that old man on the stairs losing his books , that's holmes ! I saw it in his gesture with his arm !

  • that judge sounds like he's dead but hasn't realized it yet

  • Should it be "Wot"son or "What"son? Forgive me for my ignorance (as a non-English native speaker ;)

  • The only dislike is from Professor Moriarty !

  • The only dislike is from Professor Moriarty !

  • When Holmes holds his hands out for a hug, I was totally thinking "Ain't going to happen mate" and guess what? it didn't. Serves him right!

  • At 6:39, Brett's pose mimics the original Sidney Paget drawing of this exact same moment quite precisely. Very impressive preparation and work on Brett's part to handle such a critical moment so well!

  • @thexalon I've noticed that Jeremy Brett (in the earlier episodes at least) resembles many of the original drawings by Sidney Paget. It's kind of awesome.

  • 8:19 - 8:24

    That is soooo epic <3

  • O_O OMG THIS WAS SO CUTE I LOVE SHERLOCK.

Eheh. So I tried to forget the spoilers to make this moment more awesome to watch, but I couldn't. D: However, it was still great.

  • Sherlock Holmes is Chuck Noris XD

  • Originally, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did kill off Sherlock Holmes in his books, but, due to public uproar at the murder of the character, he had to write another story, explaining how Holmes didn't really die and why everyone thought he was dead. Don't get me wrong, I'm ecstatic that he's alive, but why would the public force him to change fate? If the series was done, than it should have ended there.

  • Like. A. Boss.

  • HES ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!! HOLMES ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT YESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

those are sevral of the thing that were running through my mind when holmes took of that weird coustume, i new there was something familer (from watching episods) about his voice.

  • I love the smack that the bookdealer gives watson after he gives him his books back. I wonder if that was jeremy or sherlock goofing around....

  • viscido giudice servile con i potenti e offensivo con le persone comuni.... meravigliosa la scena dell'incontro!!!!

  • wait a minute right there. brandy does not fix everything dammit. ive seen many a episode of holmes where hey use brandy to fix things. watch the greek interpreter you'll understand better.

    damn brandy.

"I can't see from my right eye."

"drink some brandy you'll be grand."

  • The guy who plays the assassin is the same guy who narrates the begining of the 1988 Jack the Ripper movie starring Michael Caine.. Not a lot of people know that !!

  • @BWEE1000 He wanted to go back to the life of theater, instead of continueing being a movie actor.

  • @BWEE1000 Oh Edward Hardwicke is brilliant as Watson ^^...

  • Holmes is like "Hug tiems nao?.... okay, maybe not."

    LOL :)

  • HAHAHA.. God Holmes and his flair of melodrama. Poor Watson.

  • LOL. The judge kisses the ass of the nobility and puts Watson down. ha ha

  • 2:31 That's our bookdealer in the first row, right?

  • One of the greatest Bromances of all time. :)

  • @SistaSol there is no bromance.....so say such a thing is disrespectful to the characters....

  • some great detective, went and found the wrong Watson

  • ahhh, Holmes and his love for the dramatic...

  • Attention all!

I have made a remarkable discovery. If you have the classical music track called 'Nimrod' by Edward Elgar, from his collection of tunes called Enigma Variations, then fetch that, turn off the sound from this video and start the track playing at exactly 4:19 in the video and watch through to around 8:05. It is mindblowingly powerful and moving. Once I learn how to upload videos, rather than just picture slide shows, I will set this little length to that music for you.

  • watch Jeremy at 7:06 You can see the worry melt into affection.

  • 1:32 Guy of Gisbourne from Robin of Sherwood if I'm correct....

  • That was by far the best scene of Watson and Holmes I have ever seen ever- their reunion was very well done, and I couldn't keep the grin off my face at the affection passing between them.

  • *watches Holmes stroke the side of Watson's cheek* HNNNNNNNNG *Squealblushfaint*

  • @HMGiggleFairy ........don't be rude.......

  • @CrystalDiode Was I being rude? D: I don't see how, but I apologize anyway.

  • @HMGiggleFairy its ok...just me being...me i suppose sorrry

  • I'm rewatching the Granada series. Jeremy Brett is marvellous in this part of the "reunion"! One af my absolute favourite parts. How does he do it :D:D

  • that judge has such an annoying, whiny voice.

isnt it meant to be inspector lestrad instead of lestrADE? well, it is written lestrade, but i always thought the british said lestRAD.

i smiled when the old man showed up. smiled. and when you see the reflection of him straightening up, i smiled even more. and brett shows up in his handsome self. 'do you mind if i smoke a cigarette in your consulting room, watson?' squee!

  • If I remeber correctly, Doyle wanted to move on, thus ending Sherlock BUT he couldn't make as much $ so was talked into going on. The problem I've had with it is the time frame. I'm with Argenta. A friend would have no excuse or reason for doing this to another friend, especially how close they had been. I didn't really care for the writing that much after that. It just didn't seem the same. . And Watson could have had a heart attack... I've never seen this one either, so thanks again Anish.

  • Poor Watson! No one ever remembers his name. :(

  • i like that part when watson faints

  • lol the sound of Watson fainting's kind of funny.. mostly cause it's so quiet and almost soundless xD and Holmes looked good in that outfit in that scene :3

  • At 6:35 thats my favourite part

  • seriously... if my BFF tried to pull that crap with me, i would be sure to get a couple good punches in before fainting, at least :) lol.

nyawwww, jks. love how he shows up all casual like, "Hey hows it going bro? long time no see" and Watsons like O.o*Faint*

i just flippin love this scene :)

  • I love sherlock holmes, classic

  • I love Holmes to death, but I were Watson I would have given him a good slap after I woke up. Then forgiven him, of course. <3

  • I have always wondered what Watson tought at the moment when he suddenly learned Holmes wasn't dead. Neither his mid went completely blank or he tought: " Whathowwhenwheresrfghjklrnwrtsfsss..." *faint*

  • @Logitah lolol probably something along the lines of "wtf....omg....lkjsodijflohdofkjsdl" *pass out*

  • Holmes and Watson, besties forever. <3

  • He is a good leg spinner

    A gud sportsman I say

    Yes my lord.....

The jdge dsnt seem to be interested in cricket...LOL

  • "Watson, would you mind if I should smoke a cigarette in your consulting room?"

    *FAINT!*

Now THAT is just perfect Holmes/Watson interaction... as usual, Holmes has something miraculous up his sleeve (in this case, to Watson it appears no less than a ressurection!) and, as usual... Watson can't believe it (again... *FAINT!*) ;)

  • The judge is such a jerk!!!

  • disguise was flimsy. Could tell it was him soon as he opened his character's mouth.

  • @diddymuck Ah, but put yourself in Watson's place, my friend! Would you, after three years of believing your closest friend was dead, be able to see through the disguise? People typically don't tend to see things they aren't looking for and if I truly believed my best friend had shuffled of this mortal coil, I certainly wouldn't be looking for him to pop into my study, flimsy disguise or no! ;3

  • @TheSleepingSage I agree Wattson was competely sure that Holmes was dead so would have no reason to suspect,

also Holmes is a master of disguise the stories always point out that not only does he change his appearance but also his personality and demeanor which is probably even more misleading than the appearance because so much of recognizing someone is how they talk, carry themselves, etc.

  • That judge is such a snob. You would think Watson's time with Holmes would give him a little credit, but the judge just dismisses him and doesn't even trouble himself to remember his name.

Holmes's reappearance -- perfect! Just the way I imagined it! You could tell that even Holmes was giddy with excitement (well, giddy for him) at seeing his best friend again after 3 long years.

  • I've read the book a couple of weeks ago and was rather suprised about what happened to Holmes, because I hadn't (and still haven't) read the story before this one, but it's still nice to see this reunion. It's cute and it shows what good friends Holmes and Watson were. If I remember correctly, this was the first and only time Watson EVER fainted in his life so thats says enough. :-)

  • "watson would you mind if i smaoke a cigerette in your consultant room?"

    "*collapse*"

  • @fredrickUSA One of the best scenes ever IMO.

  • Courts in the 19th Century were dominated needlessly by the class system (great attention to nobility's need for sport) and the speculation of police versus forensic examination. I am glad I live in the 21st Century.

  • oooh, that coroner's really mean to Watson!

  • @sitithesecond It is actually the judge, as Dr. Watson and Inspector Lestrade are giving testimony in open court.

  • @cameron120587 oh, i thought it was the inquest, if it's an inquest it would be a coroner. I believe the public are allowed to attend inquests. I must watch the episode again. Thanks for your comment!

  • @sitithesecond This is the inquest.

  • @merrylegs234 aha, thought so ... thanks!

  • 6:33 *thump*

    HOLMES!!!!!!!

  • i just love this caring holmes, he's just so sweet!

    oh, dear, i'm in love!

  • I love the part between 6:34-6:45! i would have fainted too. I even got weepy when he showed up. Even though I've read this story, it still chokes me up!

  • Does anybody else think Holmes is kind of an asshole to use a disguise like that in front of Watson? But still it's very moving. Watson can't stop grinning.

I mean, if I were Watson, I'd be mad. "Holmes?! You're alive?! I'm gonna kill you!"

  • @Rebeccatrishel I do agree it was kind of mean. lmao

"Holmes?! You're Alive?! I'm going to kill you!"

True True. I'd be the same way.

But I guess he felt no other way since his life was in danger. It was kind of a risk going to watson's office.

  • @rebeccatrishel no i disagree...its a very holmish thing to do if you know what i mean....after all, people were still trying to kill him so it was self preservation as well

  • @rebeccatrishel Originally Holmes was meant to be dead. Doyle later "resurrected" him and explained his reappearance with him feigning death to prevent retribution from his enemies.

  • @peri2502 Yeah, Doyle originally meant for Holmes to stay dead, but the outcry from both the public and his publishers convinced him to bring Holmes back.

  • @rebeccatrishel it's better for him that to be killed by Moriarti's friends!

  • AIII! HE SEVIVE!?? HOLMES SEVIVEEEE! :D Goood, I Cry! :'D

  • That jurge is a ashole! Poor Whatson.:'( He only try Holmes matters... only because he isen' t Holmes it don't meens he cat thin like him! >:O

  • Holmes: *Hug?*

    Watson: *faints*

    So cute.

  • @Janna0Jay i would faint to

  • @Janna0Jay LOL! Totally agree.

  • So what it comes down to is that Holmes managed to beat up an old man and throw him in the pit:)

  • @illbetilbake ohh man you made me laugh xD

  • Comment removed

  • Was it a bottomless pit? (srry, i couldnt resist... nor cani resist the next statement... SPAARRTTAAAAAAAAAA!!!

  • you know, if you listen closely, the book keeper rolls his r's the same way as holmes, so you can sort of see it coming, even if you haven't seen the episode or read the book...

  • I remember that I anticipated it was him when I first saw it. I never had the opportunity to hear his real voice before ( I am from Germany and we unfortunately ruin movies by dubbing them). Jeremy Bretts voice is breathtaking and adorable!

  • um, HELLOOO!! it's called subtitles! hey, when I watch anime, i watch subtitles. when i watch movies from another language, i watch subtitles... somebody upload a german subtitle for this girl!

  • you too? I just stopped watching the dubbed version (in my case, in French), it made holmes and watson (ESPECIALLY watson) absolutely ridiculous... They should be ashamed to sell those things!

  • lmao i couldnt stop giggling when watson fainted!

  • YAY!!! I just ADORE this scene.

    SO CUTE!!!

I agree that the arms-out-for hug is just lovely, and Watson's faint! I love it!!!!

  • @GorgeousGirl200 i couldnt stop giggling!!! lmao!! but what's really great is you can see him changing in the reflection on th glass... one would wonder why watson didn't notice that...

  • Poor Watson. His expertise brushed aside and ignored while the coroner values the "evidence" (next to nothing) provided by a bunch of bluebloods.

  • come on now a hug man! a hug !

  • You can see the great friendship these too had for each other. Notice how Holmes, when he first acknowledged himself, he opened his arms as to hug Watson, but instead Watson was so much in shock that he fainted like a little school girl. Notice as well when Holmes recounted his Moriarty adventure, by automatic Holmes cried out for Watson, but caught himself in time. Now Holmes ALWAYS does things after careful thinking and reflection. Shows how much he was really attached to Watson.

  • You don't find friendships like that nowadays. It's just so sweet and funny at the same time. Long live Holmes & Watson!

  • @pinkpearlbutterfly you're right! it shows how deep and warm their friendship is. Holmes didn't want his enemies kwow he was still alive but i'm sure that he didn't call in order to protect Watson. Since, They wouldn't hesistate to kill Watson too if necessary. But Holmes face shows so clear how he was touched seeing how much he means for his dear friend, and also the remorse and the pain to hurt his friend so much.

  • @pinkpearlbutterfly excellent point and written like some one who has enjoyed the books as well

  • @CrystalDiode thanks! I also want to say kudos to the director, as even though sometimes these have a scene or two that are not in the book, they're always true to the spirit of Holmes and his personality. It's a shame that other great books have not been reproduced so faithfully :)

  • Best scene in the whole series at 6.34. When Holmes and Watson are reunited it's so sad, sweet and funny all at the same time.Jeremy and Edward are amazing in this episode. And are the best Homes and Watson. You can really feel the friendship between these two compared to David Burke(although he is good as Watson). Thanks for posting.

  • Well that judge is a nasty old coot.

  • STretttttttch! I love it!!!

  • LOL brilliant he should stretch more.

  • yeeeeeeeees

  • OMG--perfect reunion. It almost made me cry. It just feels wrong to see Watson without Holmes. This is such a great series on so many levels.

  • oh i think im about to faint. here drink some whiskey.

i love how he thrusts his arms out for a hug.

  • @cassandra5322 "oh i think im about to faint. here drink some whiskey." Brandy. Back then it was normal to use alcohol as a "constitution strengthener" if someone felt weak or to revive them. Kind of strange since alcohol's a depressant but, hey, I guess it worked.

And the not-hug is so totally adorable :-)

  • does watson have a last name?

  • uhhh...Watson? Dr.John H. Watson....

  • @Banminator Watson is his last name. His name is John Watson.

  • Wierd how I never new that.

  • @Banminator this comment cracked me up lmao! if you've seen the devil's foot, you'd know that lols!

  • I've seen/read them all, I guess im not very observant =P

  • it made my weekend!

  • I love the reunion, it warms my heart every single time. Holmes' face...that smile when Watson wakes from fainting just melts my heart. Brett's Holmes doesn't half make me swoon :)

  • is not it interesting to see these two guys how they greet each other after three years...it could not be more English than this!!! Even not a full sized! hug, let alone kisses!

  • (only for those who has seen this before)look carefully at the right side of the screen on 4:13 to 4:20.

  • Wow, I can't believe I've never noticed that before. Epic fail on my part.

  • Shouldn't be a surprise, as he makes mention a few seconds later...

  • Oh my god, people who comment here totally sound English in their choice of words

  • hahah that i do agree. but you can't deny the fact that this is an English film.

  • @LordShagrath Well, some of them might actually be British but I personally(and I'm sure other people too) tend to echo British vocabulary when I'm watching something with such a dialect in it. Don't know why but it's something I do.

  • The judge is hilarious :P

    "Thankyou, Doc-tor... Watson"

    "A good sportsman, in fact"

    hehe

  • I love how the judge is so arrogant with Watson, then so respectful with the others, classic wonderful interpretation!

  • my dear friend. Jeremy Brett is the best portrayal of sherlock holmes. I don´t understand how could you not see the excelent role that he portrayal.

  • "my dear friend" I don't understand why you were never taught what the word "opinion" means.

  • Yes, i know. " everyone have their opinion". The usual argument.

  • Maybe because it's a good argument? I've always been more of a fan of Rathbone, but you seem to state as a fact, that "Jeremy Brett is the best portrayal of sherlock holmes", when don't you mean that it's your bloody opinion. Not everyone's. There are a lot of people that prefer Brett, and he's not bad, just not my Holmes.

  • Well. I saw the act of Rathbone and i must say that ins´t good. He didn had carisma and character.

  • well. What is for you, carisma? For me, what missed in Rathbone was elegance, attitude and trust in himself

  • Arrogance? Well, you have right, but that is what gave a little charm to him. But, that of the original is a little stupid. What the matter if the actor is better than the original?

  • Arrogance and charm don't really go hand in hand that well. No matter to that at all, I just don't think that's the case.
