  • i hear you nick

  • So I love Nick's music. Sometimes I wish I could go back into the past, find him, and chat over a cup of tea about some of the things he writes..

I really like "Things Behind the Sun".

  • Even though I didn't discover his music directly through commercials or movies, I realize that it's compiled here on YouTube at least in part because someone recognized his greatness and considered it worthy of use. I can waste energy sneering at that or be grateful that this has made it easier for us to discover his body of work. I choose the latter. Given that the man himself craved recognition but could not bring himself to do what was necessary to achieve fame, I'm happy for him.

  • Beautiful song, incredible lyrics.

  • RIP ubermensch

  • Beautiful video for a beautiful song.

  • Guess there is a genius in every culture. Cuba has one....his name his Silvio Rodriguez.

  • @mauriciobeltre Chile has one too. His name is Victor Jara.:)

  • @rvilcheszamora Oh yes indeed. Thank you for responding.

  • People that feel they need to argue about music will never truly understand...those that know, don't argue,,,,,,,,,those that argue, don't know....

  • a couple of songs were used in the movie THE LAKE HOUSE with Sandra Bullock. Great movie!!!!

  • thank you for putting this up - there was a time when we played Nick Drake on a loop all night while sleeping, 25 years ago and I've never heard him since until today, though I've always wanted to recreate that sound myself.. hearing this is like having a hand reach deep inside and pull on something, joyful yet tragic..though beautiful

  • vv This is why a utopia will never exist. vv

  • Hmm, listened to this after hearing the Mars Volta's cover. This version is very good, but I prefer TMV's version a bit more. Very good song regardless.

  • @JeremyOrOmega naaaaa

  • @JeremyOrOmega Hmm, this is such a masterpiece in guitar, lyrics, vocal phrasing, and tone that I checked out TMV's version due to your outrageous comment. Hmm, it's apparent you are a musical idiot. They couldn't get the rythym, the vocals were hideous and stupid. And mostly they turned a masterpiece into a pile of shit which is hard to due. it's almost not worth commenting. I take it your not very musical are ya?

  • @californiaclaybo

    Musical idiot > Regular idiot.

I already said I liked this version, I just prefer The Mars Volta's. Why? Because The Mars Volta is my favorite band, and I just so happen to prefer their style to Nick Drake's.

You judge my taste because it's different than yours. This makes you a jackass unworthy of respect in the least. I don't usually call names, but you are the most ignorant human I've come across in a long time. Insulting people because of your opinion. Dumb shit.

  • @JeremyOrOmega This isn't a matter of opinion or taste. Mozart has more depth and substance musically than vanilla ice. If someone likes vanilla ice or The Mars Volta, that is fine. But musically speaking comparing the Mars Volta to Nick Drake on his song is like comparing popsicles to cocaine. It's ridiculous and STUPID! Mars Volta are not musical genius as is Nick Drake. Your first comment shows you don't know much about music. Whatever your tastes are nobody cares on Nick Drakes song.

  • @californiaclaybo

Aficionados? You call yourself an aficionado because you listen to Nick Drake? High strung much?

You don't listen to much TMV, so please don't make ignorant assertions.

Also, TMV is much more popular than Nick Drake. While this doesn't say anything about performance, it does make them the Mozart in your poorly constructed comparison.

Either way, we shouldn't be comparing bands, they are totally different, and the entire conversation is insulting to what they stand for.

  • @JeremyOrOmega People listening to this song on this channel are either musicians or music aficionados and they don't give a shit about some ignorant ass comment from you. If someone on here says there is another version of this that is really good, they are expecting something creative and skillful and good not some bubble gum wanna be pop shit where they can't even get the time signatures or keys figured out. Damn son do you realize how stupid you are making yourself look to everyone!!!

  • @californiaclaybo I also prefer this version better than TMV's. I feel this version is perfect. But bro, you're really coming across as a total ass. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Not trying to make anyone mad. Just let the guy have his opinion. You don't have to come here and insult peoples tastes. It's very rude. I wish you the best, have a nice day and keep on enjoying great music.

  • I'm a dark-hearted cynical bastard, but this is one of the more beautiful songs I've ever heard.

  • I cant quite put into words what it is that makes me love Nick's music so much...Its magic i guess

  • on about every nick drake youtube song somebody manages to comment about justin beiber, i don't see how people can put them in the same sentance... theyre from two ends of a spectrum, nick drake was never plastered everywhere, and he wrote songs simply for himself. beiber writes songs for money and fame and he is everywhere, but isn't it nicer that nick drake isnt everywhere and everybody doesnt go on about him 24/7? the small amount of people who have heard him all love his work

  • @CHEAPANDUNCHEERFULL Why bother repeating the name?

  • I saw some burger king in the flowers :/

  • Never thought of Bruce Lee and Nick Drake but hey.i love Nick drake but i feel like listening to some Basement jax now.But some music is good some is shit just like people init.

  • I think people need to seriously calm down about the whole Bieber sketch. One, its pretty much unnecessary to even bring him up in a comment when the song has literally no relevance to him. Two, stereotyping all of the fans and saying stuff along the lines of that, '' They don't know what real music is '' Is very shallow and quite low. Do you's not realize that you are the reason why all of his fans annoy the majority of us?? If you want to listen to Bieber and nick drake do it, lady gaga? Fine!

  • a classic

  • i listened to TMV cover on this song and thats how i found out about Nick. this is REAL music

  • this is song is so beautiful... my dad's had it on CD for years, when i was little i used to close my eyes and listen to it... now that i'm older, and can actually indentify it i realize how powerful the lyrics are... you know, they actually MEAN something compared to all the crap getting publicity these days.

  • The truth is the really great artists will not get recognized in their lifetime. Nothing succeeds like mediocrity! Right now the best artists are working in obscurity known to only a very few.

  • we believe in the sea that the man is there with the perfect fifth staring into the void. the colours and the colours behind the moon are already in the rain. thank you nick.

  • Oustanding video. One of the best I've seen here. Well done.

  • search nicolas and the iceni rowan. they write beautiful folk music which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • this man is awasome..........nothing compare with him actually

  • This song is one for the days it seems like you feel everything...

For the days when watching traffic wrenches my heartstrings

and the sky and clouds are suddenly inconceivable

and my legs and feet move on their own accord

and I wonder about every thing that I think I know

and I try to forget about everything I can't quite remember

and tell myself to close my eyes and think about a sound

and that's when I realize that some people were meant to teach us

how to both Live and Rest In Peace.

    Love.

  • Music now is RUBBISH. This is Stunning. It's Honest, Expressive & isn't over Produced out of existence, & then Compressed into a Brick Wall of LOUDNESS just to stand out on an iPod.

I'm Sorry to Sound so old & Bitter but I Seriously think that Music has gone totally Down hill now. It's POP vs. DUBSTEP - Both a Sound made from EGO. And I'm SICK of it.

Another of Drakes over looked songs is "Know". Give it a listen!

  • This, in my opinion, is one of Nicks most beautiful pieces- music as it should be, just the man and his guitar, no frills, no packaging. My favourite of Nicks tracks has to be "fruit tree" a truly haunting song, with a strangely prophetic meaning. The fragile beauty of Nicks music will always stand the test of time, it is just so sad the world was going too fast for him

  • Comment removed

  • This is the only song I have ever listened to in my life that has caused me to tear up for no good reason besides the beauty of this piece.

  • I always envision Nick, Jeff Buckley, and Elliot Smith jamming away with the biggest smiles on their faces, and a feeling of freedom finally in their hearts. God bless you dudes, you are the best. Haters always gonna hate. Just let them go away. Nick Drake is wonderful. :)

  • happy birthday

  • This song is Prophetic. Every word went straight to my heart. Reminds me of a time when i was lost and grasping for meaning in this world. "Who will hear what i say"...i hear what you say Nick. Beautiful soul x

  • @1m2a3t4t5 What the? I'm not sure what you want from me with a comment like that. I like Nick Drake songs so what?I'm not perfect so what? I like that other people like Nick Drake so what. Anyway, you have a weird username;) No really, I'm not kidding it's like the sort of username a robot has. Typing it was annoying. Wasting my time to read your reply to my unusually positive reply to someone elses comment was annoying too. So in summary you have been annoying;) Now people have to read this..

  • you cant deny the insane awesomeness that is the mars volta. but nick drake is god here for sure

  • Stop complaining about him getting recognition! It's obvious that he wrote songs for himself (not the industry) and they aren't to be easily felt or understood by everyone. We are just lucky that someone recorded it...

  • I heard The Mars Volta's cover of this first

It's a sad way to discover Nick Drake

But I'm hell as happy I did

Personally I like the original better... >> Should I mention The Mars Volta on this video... no >> So I'll stop

R.I.P Nick Drake, Sorry life didn't cut it for you :(

  • Who the fuck could possibly not like this.

  • Beautiful, but I do believe Nick Drake was a gentle soul so I shouldn't be surprised with the talent he displayed through his music...

  • Actually,I started listening to this song because Heath Ledger talked about him...Thought it was interesting...He wanted to "pursue his story"

  • @ITSLIKEARIVER2000 They both died in their sleep :( Bless them both.

  • I can still see him standing there singing this in1969 and the special feel of it

  • search nicolas and the iceni narrow road to the deep north. they write beautiful songs which have echoes of drake

  • good to find solitude while listening to nick drake songs in the office. summer time again, indeed!! missing old life... missing old self... stucked in the rat race... when will all these end?

  • it's sad that people only realize how good he is after his death

  • RIVAL KNIGHT storms arise single now available on itunes and amazon.com search rival knight click my page to listen.

  • @Jasoncrets

Get the fuck out of here with that

  • This song feels like dreams

  • nature in a kaleidoscope

  • great video, thanks !

  • Syllogistic thinker, it's about vibration

  • Music is dying today... I can't believe the public likes all of the "pop" these days... I want the 70's, 80's, and 90's to reincarnate. This song makes me want to type a lot of dot dot dots...(ellipses)

  • Fucking amazing song

  • The man is simply brilliant and will outlive us all.

  • I have been searching for music like Nick Drakes for a long, long time. Being 14, i am practically drowning it todays music. I'm actually almost crying. This song is simply amazing. I don't think a song has ever reached out to me like this one has. Thank you, Nick.

  • @Brookenesss

you have very mature and excellent taste. When i was 14, about half of what i liked was complete crap, thankfully the other half was not. Good that nick threw you a lifeline and from so far away. He's got great aim and of course, sweet timing.

  • @demeneye Honestly, it would have been much better if what you listened to was just all completely terrible not half and half, the two shall not be mixed and it discraces the good.

  • @Brookenesss im 15 and its the same for everyone of our generation. if you want someone else slightly like nick drake try cat stevens and kings of convenience. theyre different styles to nick but have the same feeling in their music.

  • @Brookenesss

Also try John Mayer or Syd Barret. I don't know you may like one of them.

  • My favorite Nick Drake song, and that's saying a lot, cause I love everything by Nick.

  • this is my favorite song and i've been a music fanatic for the last 10 years

  • It's funny, I have been listening to Nick for the past couple of days now, and I see the selflessness and lack of ego that only masters of thier own lives embody (Bruce Lee and a few others). Reading his life story on wiki is sad, however I noticed so many comments on how great Nick was, how he deserved more etc...well people there are those among us that you still don't support, this is why Justin Bieber and other are ahead, all you care about is a package, if not, support the unkown NOW

  • @barrymasteller This is interesting, barry, and I'm a big Nick Drake fan, too; but I wonder about two things: First, who are you talking to when you say, "all you care about", and, second, how can they support the UNKNOWN if they are unknown and nobody knows about them?

  • @barrymasteller seriously. i'll even go back to his time and say that saturday morning marketing gimmick garbage like KISS got the recognition this guy deserved.

  • @barrymasteller Agree 100%! The problem is that artists (I use the word to differentiate him and those like him from the "Beibers") are often only truly appreciated posthumously as their work is profound and only appreciated by following generations. While it is very sad that he didn't get to see his work reach the mainstream, I feel confident that he would be very pleased to know that he will never be considered a passing fad. His music stands the test of time, the true sign of genius,

  • @Robibi84 I like to think he knew that it would catch on later. He at least knew that people and what they've done are only appreciated most when they die. As evidenced by fruit tree.

  • @barrymasteller Really well said Barry, and you're so right.

  • @barrymasteller Bruce Lee was like Nick Drake?

  • @barrymasteller what's ironic, is that Justin Bieber was "the unkown" until he started getting support and that's when the hate began...

  • @barrymasteller This was great until you mentioned JUSTIN BEIBER. Firstly who cares about Bieber except 10 year old school girls & those who are envious of his success? Lets just enjoy our genre of music & to hell with teeny bopper music ffs!!

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 i really don't mean to intrude, but I can't help but point out that I'm 15, I love Justin Bieber, and I also love Nick Drake - please don't sterotype beliebers.

  • @LilBlueJellyBeanx Evidently you did mean to intrude. Whatever...

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 You're right, I was trying to be polite. You should try it sometime...

  • @LilBlueJellyBeanx good for you.Dont let pretentious assholes tell you what constitutes good music.Music is an individual experience, these people dont understand art they only understand what they are told to understand

  • @barrymasteller for the tiniest of milliseconds, i thought you'd written that Justin Bieber was misunderstood, i choked & coffee went up my nose :( That'll teach me for speed reading... But, well said my friend. Well said indeed <3

  • @barrymasteller

That is perhaps the dumbest thing I have ever heard in my life. You sound like someone who has been told by someone that this is an important song and now your here to prove how deep you are but expressing your understanding of it and him in such simplistic terms you are proving you are the very type of person he is talking about.

  • @oddball111 nooooo, what he actually is saying is that there are so many people complaining that Nick Drake didn't/doesn't get much recognition (even though he definitely does), but in appreciating the music of a man long since passed, they fail to notice the scores of virtually unknown musicians alive today. They complain that music today is rubbish, but only pay attention to the mainstream acts. In essence, becoming exactly what they are complaining about. Seeing without looking deeper.

  • Powerful....the hope amidst despair.....this is my favorite of all Nick Drake's music

  • can listen to this song endlessly

  • when I saw him years ago this track stood out in my mind , and it wasnt put on record until three years later, but he didnt perform too often as we know.

  • He committed suicide today. Nick led an introverted lifestyle. His sound is very bittersweet, like a cold sunset in the autumn or winter. Similar to the setting on this day, the day of his death.

  • @artstar19 Or misfortunately died today(yesterday). I totally agree. Drake is possibly the most autumnal writer since Dylan Thomas.

  • @rushdarussian SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU FUCKING RUSSIAN TROLL!!!

  • i'm with you mummylips all the way;)

  • Im voting down to this russian rapper,,russian rap? are you kiddin me? who else is with me on this?,,at least go to rap vids and promote yourself,,drake fans dont give a sh*t about rap,,and more so,,russian rap

  • @mummylips we dont give a shit about rap, let along russian rap, cunts

  • I just can't get this song out of my head.

  • @bassgod89 Jack Woodward.......Russian Rapper??? Uhh...Im lost.

  • I love the visuals along with this beautiful song.

  • absolute absolute genious...the lyrics, the guitar, the sound of melancholy...

  • Please beware of them that stare They'll only smile to see you while Your time away And once you've seen what they have been To win the earth just won't seem worth Your night or your day Who'll hear what I say. Look around you find the ground Is not so far from where you are but Don´t be too wise For down below they never grow They're always tired and charms are hired From out of their eyes Never surprise.

  • Take your time and you'll be fine And say a prayer for people there Who live on the floor And if you see what's meant to be Don't name the day or try to say It happened before. Don't be shy you learn to fly And see the sun when day is done If only you see Just what you are beneath a star That came to stay one rainy day In autumn for free Yes, be what you'll be.

  • Please beware of them that stare They'll only smile to see you while Your time away And once you've seen what they have been To win the earth just won't seem worth

Your night or your day Who'll hear what I say.

  • Open up the broken cup Let goodly sin and sunshine in Yes that's today. And open wide the hymns you hide You find renown while people frown At things that you say But say what you'll say About the farmers and the fun And the things behind the sun And the people round your head Who say everything's been said And the movement in your brain

Sends you out into the rain.

  • This is masterpiece. If not, nothing is.

  • @MarkMayes1965 YOU must have been looking into the mirror when you made that statement.

  • @MarkMayes1965 sad case

  • I'm in love with his voice. So velvety and perfect. *sigh*

  • john martyns song "solid air" was about nick and if u listen the lyrics its also quite interesting "i dont no whats goin on in ur mind but i can tell u dont like what u find"

nick drake is great timeless music.

five leaves left on a stormy autumn day and enjoy with a glass or 2 of wine.

  • @blesso1000 I say use one of the five leaves left and your pretty set to go.

  • i read a biography on nick drake a few months back caled "darker then the deepest sea" very good well worth checking out and gives a great insight into nicks draks life by people that new him parents family freinds etc.fellow folk singer john martyn had some interesting things to say about him and so did the women in his life mainly implying that drake might have been gay this being one of the theorys why he commited Suicide .

  • DEATH TO THE INDUSTRY THAT RAPES US OF OUR SOULS!!!

  • @icec0rpse lol what? If we didnt have the music industry then you can go and throw out all the cd's and vinyl's from your collection

  • @icec0rpse You alone are the master of your soul. No industry can destroy that... Be accountable. Be yourself and stop blaming intangibles for your short comings and the unfairness of life.

  • what the hell

  • I love how everyone here's commenting on the pitiful state on current industry standards. Let's keep the folk scene alive, guys!

  • The Greatest Song Ever Written.

  • where did you get the pelican? what is it?

  • Feeling, emotion and an ability to get under you skin and inside your head!!

recently discovered Nicks music and Im inspired, astounded and just in awe at someone the same age as me producing such beautiful songs..

Its real, its raw and im very moved.

    Irish writer and music fanatic.

  • i think his voice is great. and his work is beautiful. but i dont think it matters how well he sings or how great his work is...i think the meaning in his voice is what matters and the meaning to the song.

  • B-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.

  • I am so glad for the internet, because now this song and its kind will live forever.

  • It´s my favourite one. "Please beware of them that stare. They´ll only smile to see you while your time away". I agree - imperfection is what makes it perfect. And that it comes from the heart and isn´t oriented on a wallet.

  • Very beautiful song and a great artist.

  • I'm enjoying this.

  • Cool vid

  • to kiwiaka2: I totally agree! They can make Kermit the Frog sound like Pavarotti through high tech, digitalized machines.....but, only God can make a voice sound so angelic. Just beautiful as it is, flaws and all (but, really what flaws?). This kid had that something that so few do...passion, conviction, soulfullness...no, a machine cannot bring me to tears like this....can't happen! It's just sad that talents like his are often short-lived. R.I.P., beautiful spirit, not of this world.....

  • good word kiwiaka

  • he says beware what i says then look around....

  • Nick Drakes stuff on the web is harder to get to now cause of "Drake" that ass hole rapper

  • my favorite sonf of nick..............

  • I love Mars Volta, but their cover of this song is terrible.

  • only for an instant, a fractional second of realizing, of knowin, and then unknowing, then she was back again within herself, an incomplete, insignificant life form that crouched agains the tree, feeling the rough bark of the massive oak against her shoulders and her back, with David Hunt standing in the path beside her and in the glen a squirming can of worms that seemed to shine with a holy light, so bright and glittering that it was beautiful as no can of worms could ever be

  • The Schizoid lives under the glare of a black sun. his disconnection with the real world causes him to see objects and others as fake, pointless and unreal. he is so afraid of being destroyed in the end he self-destructs. the end.

  • I don`t want to say it`s my favourite song by Nick Drake-simply because all his songs are so extraordinary-as was the man, but I hear this one over and over again and it is just outstanding.

  • a poet who became a skilled guitarplayer, no wait a guitarplayer who became a poet delivering the good of his tremendous soul in a way most people will never understand. whatever.. his lyrics are so straight haunting that i just have to admit that he wasnt just talented he was honestly and felt the words i love to listen to every now and then. thx for sharing

  • Yup. Although I love ALL of his work, this is really his greatest statement. And thanks for the wonderful eye candy :-)

  • sweet vid , great tune

  • My favorite Nick Drake song. It's just gorgeous

  • Comment removed

  • Wonderful vocal performance, this is poetry. I love the song.

  • Just fucking amazing ... I'm sorry Bob Dylan gets way to much credit for folk. Nick Drake and Donovan just blow me away.

  • @xxHoldenxCaulfieldxx Bob Dylan's more rock 'n roll anyway, he kinda kicked it to the folkers with "Bringing It All Back Home."

  • Some of the most haunting acoustic playing ever. And that voice is just gravy.

  • bravo pour cette vidéo

    sobrement psychédélique

    très réussie

  • Such a beautiful soul, so true to his heart.

  • I'm dreaming when I listen to his soothing voice.

  • oh and by the way the chime of the city clock is his best song closely by northern sky i love all his stuff bryter layter album is the best!!!! :)

  • some oen commented sating he cant sing he can just not pitch perfect who cares he is a poet like dylan its not all about the voice i think his voice is good unique your opinion though :)

  • where do i get this song i have his fruit tree box set anyone help? :)

  • @stephenmusicman .... its on his 'pink moon' album

  • His songs-especially this one are from another world. They are really the only kind of song that is any good to us. Most other songs, even the best, only take us to the edge of the precipise but Nicks take us with him on the plunge over the edge. That is why they are so scary.

  • I work in the audio industry and the very idea of perfect vocal makes me wanna puke. why? Because it is software driven. Yes, we have created software that will analyze the vocal and correct any imperfections in pitch as the vocal is delivered. GROASE!! Imperfection is what makes art belong to an artist and sets him aside from anyone else. it reveals the artist to his audience..

  • I couldn't agree more. American Idol sucks because they all sound alike. No one sounds like Dylan but Dylan. Same goes for Young and Drake and Cash and even Ol' Daniel Johnston!

  • @danielion999 'Idol' is the biggest joke on earth, singing a song well (someone elses) has nothing to do with being an artist

  • @danielion999

could you say the same for a pianist or a guitarist? A singer is above all a musician, too,no?

  • @danielion999-I love all aforementioned artists. If one person my age(14) could understand and agree...no if everyone could I would be content. And I know there are kids my age that appreciate good music, but they fall under the trap of shitty AOR stations. it makes me mad

  • @danielion999 or elliott smith

  • American Idol is a cash-raking machine churning out pop clones that appeal to the lowest common denominator.

  • @breeeegs i don't think i could have said it any better myself...bravo!!!
