yeah cause you have been an octopus in your life and know their habitat like the back of your hand? unless you live with the octopi (which I doubt) then SHUT UP! dont talk about shit you have no idea about! stupid people!
I really want an octopus, but need to do more research and set-up work before even looking for a place to purchase them. I wouldn't exactly say they are hard pets, they just have a fair amount of maintance regarding set-up...but not much more so than my current reptiles. I think they are amazing to watch. I've read alot that octopi only live for a year, does anyone know if this is just the captivity age, or also the age in the wild?? x
dude, love your octopus. if i could, i would donate a larger cage for him so he could feel more comfortable, not saying your a bad owner. obviously you've raised it very well. wish i had one, but my parents would freak out and probably kill it.
Have you seen the documentary called "The Future is Wild: The tentacle forest"? One of the final episode shows in 100 millions years or so time, future octopus called squibbon, will become civilised. New civilisation, it will take over human civilisation due to their high-intelligence.
Octopus are very intelligent animals, they have a small brain in each leg and they feed information to the main brain. You can't just dump them in a tank and expect them to do their own thing, i should imagine because they're so smart they get bored very easily. Its such a shame they have an average life span of 1-2 years, in my opinion they should live for 70+ years its so unfortunate.
If they lived for 70 years I think we would then have a species too intelligent for its own good.....I cant imagine what would take place? Octopus's getting civilized??!
the way you keep them from getting bored is you put their food in something getting more and more complicated, they are very smart and seem to love the challenges. :)
the way i see it is that..this Oct COuld live in a better place or in a worse place or it COuld be dead..but its not and maybe not exactly living in the perfect enviroment but atleast its fed and alive. the same with humans. Some are rich and sum poor some dead and alive and If an alien had one of our kind as a pet. If still couldnt exactly give us what we need. Even if its house clothing warmth and food..then again we could be better in our polanet earth or worse in our worlds dangerous streets
@Dtrovato19 I'm not an expert on Octupus but from what I know because I wanted one in the past was they only live like 8 months (i could be wrong it it might be they mature at 8 months) but I no that they're life span for sure isn't that long. It's not like turtles or a dogs.
You know what's cooler than an octopus?
A cuttlefish. awesome if you have a cuttlefish or moon jelly fish tank.
Have you considdered googling it or speaking to your LFS. Octopuses need constant attention and stimulation. you probably just want it as a show piece.
Beautiful animal but like so often is the case with these kinds of exotic aquatic pets, the tank needs to be a lot bigger with a lot more actual live rock and live coral, rather than printed backdrops & a beer mug. These animals need environments which resemble their natural homes if one expects them to survive. If you want an exotic pet, find out what it needs & set that up before you get it in the first place. It's the least you can do for taking it out of its natural home.
a guy at petco told me that u have to order special custom tanks because the glass on regular tanks isnt thick enough..and they have been known to break the glass with the suckers but u dont think thats true
@finalman25. Would need to be prety big to break the glass, they will die in an aquarium well before then. These creatures are best left in the ocean where they have a greater chance of survival
@finalman25. No im one of thoes ppl who think if i can provide long term needs before purchasing. NO ONE can provide an octopuses long term needs in an aquarium.
Pet octopus aren't meant to be kept with live coral. As far as i can tell this particular species isn't even tropical. If the ocopus isn't in a suitable environment it will die, plain and simple. It doesn't exactly look half dead.
You realize that most octopus are not compatible to live with coral and live rock? Most octopus' natural home is just plain rocks, they also like caves. The tank also looks like it is an ok size, should be 50 gal, but that octopus looks small. Getting a tank set up for an octopus is not easy and I am sure that this person looked up how before they did, if they didn't it would be dead. That octopus has a good home with a well set up tank and the owner clearly has knowledge of how to care for it.
I like your choice of name Admiral Nelson! would that be the same lord Nelson who was sort of like a nemisis to Napoleon and who also died in The battle of Trafalgar on his boat the Victory
If anyone is really, really interested in getting one...I'd highly advise you to go look at TONMO (Google it, I don't like linking). The site specialises in discussing the care of many octopus species. It's pretty awesome. :D
Ahhh! So I've been thinking about getting one but I've done a LOT of research and they sound fascination but super expensive. How much did yours cost, equipment and everything? And is it very time consuming? The last 10 seconds of this video is the single most amazing thing I have ever seen.
i've thought about having a octopus, they're so amazing! But it's a clever, really clever animal.Unlike a banal goldfish, It might even feel a kind of sadness in being trapped in a tanker . Go figure.
wow those are so cool!!!!!!! i have about three questions ok first how many gallons should the tank be? second where can you get octopuses? and last is it difficult to pull off a saltwater tank???? but lastly they are amazing animals and it would be awesome to have one!!!!!
do you reccomend people buying a pet octopus for beginer fish owners? i think there the best ever and i really want one but i dont want to ruin his life
No. They're for really advanced hobbyists, if you've kept a lot of saltwater animals before. They don't live very long, maybe 8 months at the most for a small species. The only one that even lives 8 years, the Giant Pacific Octopus, you'd need a commercial-sized aquarium, which'd run you millions of dollars to build and maintain, imo.
There's a background sampler that's taken from some Stones song that they didn't get permission for so Mick Jagger sued and won the rights to every penny ever made on Bittersweet Symphony.
We are thinking about getting an octupus for our tank. how big is your tank/the octupus?? How much room do they need? Also, I heard that they sometimes get frightened and can ink within the tank killing themselves/tank mates...is this true?

^_^ Great octo! Are they really hard to keep? I've heard inking can be a problem and suffocate them in such a small environment. What kind is that one?
They are not hard to keep as long as your tank is clean. They will try to escape whatever tank you put them in so you must block the exits! If they ink you have to replace most of their water, but it is my friends Octo so I don't know the species. Good luck!
