Before Reality T.V. you had to go to a midnight showing of a under-ground art movie, at your local out-of-the way movie theatre . . in the bad part of town . . .
@monoclecobra then you will never truly grasp it's purpose, it's right in front of your eyes and you still can't see it even with the inner eye that being stoned can give you. I now truly have lost faith in mankind, and there wasn't much to begin with
jim was a visionary this creates such an imppression on viewer ion the whole la scene back then things seem so real nowdays it looks like part of a tv show or something
By filming everything out the window... Jim is trying to show all the beauty that so many of us overlook. The simple things.... either that... or he was just not that creative and couldn't think of anything else.... it's a close call.
I agree with your opinion of this film's artistic value, because really, anyone who says they would watch it without Jim is bullshitting. It's precisely because we're applying our knowledge of who Jim was and his state of mind at the time that 'HWY' holds any depth or meaning. It really amounts to whether you believe art should (or can) exist independent of its time and subject matter. Either way it's quite impressive that we can find value in what is essentially stock footage of everyday life.
@davidjtull The only real, tangible distinction between art and object is how people look at it, (not that I consider this great art or anything). It's just too much of a slippery slope to go down if you're going to start limiting 'art' by any specific standards. As you said, anything can be meaningful if looked at in a certain way; Art is just stuff that's created for that very purpose.
what's up ernestpresley don't you believe in freedom of speech. Everyone who met the Lizard King said he was a bit of an asshole. I read the biography "no one here gets out alive " . Morrison taunted and ridiculed a cripple in a wheelchair, on the local bus when he was a teenager.
The filming here took place through South Central LA first, then on to down town LA, then west through Culver City then Santa Monica, and finally Venice California.
