@MrBavelaar actually a 5120 has different (this 5127 has single-coil deArmond 2000s) pickups. 'gretsch-buckers'. they're very gibson-like humbuckers. thicker. hotter & dirtier (in a good way!) -i swapped mine out for TV Joneses, but honestly, i miss the original ones. they have a great tone for hard rock. if i had the cash i'd buy another one & keep it stock.
I don't think this guitar is good for hard rock, because the overdrive sound doesn't sustain on these single-coil pickups. I think you'd better choose Hum-bucking pickups like a LesPaul.
@googaboogaloo billy duffy does use a grestch (white falcon) but his pickups are TV Joneses. he has a TV Classic in the neck position and a Classic Plus in the bridge. the Plus is a little hotter than a normal Classic.
of course those are basically TV Jones' replicas of the gretsch filtertrons, which are humbuckers.
@googaboogaloo another rockin guitarist who plays gretsches is Tim Armstrong from Rancid, who plays a 70s Country Club. while his Electromatic signature model has filtertrons, his actual Country Club may have Dynasonics in them (single coils very similar to the DeArmond 2000s on the guitar in this video.)
Rowe Industries Inc. in Toledo, Ohio built pickups for many of the well known guitar companies including Fender, Gretsch, Harmony, Guild, Ovation . They also built all of the DeArmond line of musical equipment . I worked there in the mid 60's and did a lot of the final testing of all of these pickups and wiring harneses.
Really great sounding stuff, and it was a cool place to work back then..
@FreerunnerDave You are SO close-minded, people have different playing styles and when you say someone's technique is 'Gay' don't expect to be taken seriously.
@ManamoPrime it just looks heaps unco........thats all, but it works for him thats why i didnt take it worswe than gay.......and for the pinkie......its kinda needed for someone who plays guitar.......
I wouldn't change those pickups. Filtertrons are the coolest pickups in the world but I guarantee you'd miss those 2000's which do a pretty fair job of sounding like the storied Dynasonics of old. They also look killer. Good job. A fellow Gretsch nut from KY.
is it a good guitar? so far from what ive heard theyre quite ..hrash..well not harsh but its not a very comfortable smooth tone like on a jazz guitar for example..what would u say??
I messed around with the Boss RE-20.. I didn't really like the slap back on it.. I was using an old Gretsch 6119 and a Fender Deluxe.... I'm a filtertron guy and usually love the tone those pickups produce but there was something missing.....
I used a Roland Space Echo for this vid, but I also have a Boss RE-20. The Boss RE-20 is really nice. It has the completely same sound as the Space Echo.
I think you'd better mess around with the RE-20 more, until you get a good sound.
i love this guitar and the white falcon but any gretsch guitar i play with f-holes i always take of the pickguard and if i have to i put a clear one on
that sounds awesome. i'm buying a cheap chinese rip off of a white falcon for 300 as a colector and shower'offer. but man you got some mad effects with that, keep it up.
straymouse has some serious gear like Fender bassman roland echo 301 ect...so it will be difficult. Also 5120 has not dearmond2k which have good "gretsch twang". Anyway the more simple is to put reverb slap-back echo and some Fender clear sounds. Take a fender champ XD.
You are right. This is a G5127. This guitar has DeArmond 2000 single-coil pickups, but I don't like the pickup, because it has too sparkling and skinny sound, so if you want a cheap gretsch, I recommend G5120 that has dual-coil pickups. If you can pay enough money, I recommend a guitar with Filter'Tron or DynaSonic or TV Jones Classic. If you need 50's classic tone, DynaSonic is good, but I think TV Jones Classic is the best P.U for Gretsch guitars
@MrBavelaar actually a 5120 has different (this 5127 has single-coil deArmond 2000s) pickups. If you need 50's classic tone, DynaSonic is good, but I think TV Jones Classic is the best P.U for Gretsch guitars

do u know if that full bigsby on ur guitar would fit on an gibson sg?
padillalee 4 years ago
I think Licensed Bigsby B60 fits Gibson GS.
This guitar's bigsby is the Licensed B60 also.
Probably original B6 does not fit, because SG's body is thin. B6 and B60 are the same full size except the size of the hinge.
