With digital technology these rolls can be refined to such a point that there's almost no way to tell except for the old approach to the music itself.
@Curatica why do you think so? I can say the style "resemble" so much his "successor" Alicia de Larrocha...but for sure it is not her (I know all her versions of the piece). Could be Marshall too, his student and teacher of Alicia, there are recordings from him. Theoshow2 should give some more information about that performance.
How marvelous to have this! We can truly go back into the past with these documents. That being said, I prefer Alicia de Larrocha's stunning performance of this available on YouTube to a video of flickering candlelight.
I daren't post the MP3 (DRM!) but look out for 'Masters of the Piano Roll, Granados plays Granados', Dal Segno DSPRCD 008 for this and his Goyescas. Brilliant. A great pity his life was cut short by a submarine.
Regarding the comparison between Granados and Larrocha, I believe her pianism and technique are better but the spirit and passion of Granados' own playing are on par and make for a great performance also. No doubt about who is the better pianist, though.
If you are interested I can offers you a Piece of Granados Goyescas Intermezzo played by a unknowed violin called Pau Casals and a young pianist as Enrrique Granados.
Two best friends and any of the more genial catalan musicians.(MP3)
Since I heard this recording it is impossible to me to be impress with other recording of the same piece. The dinamics, articulations, there are some certain magic things with this interpretation that I can not explain, then I found that this was the last time Granados play the piano before he Died by German Hands when crossing the manche channel. See Wikipedia for more informations.
Listening to this jewel it seems there was nobody even close to Granados in his own music;rythmic elan, elegance, finesse of ornaments in a rapid tempo that never sounds hurried. All this put together is so elusive that the high standard of many fine interpreters, even Alicia, falls short by comparison. Granados:one of the most tragic of early deaths in music.
my God, how dare anyone say that Alicia falls short. She does perfect justice to this music. I am certain that Granados would say himself that ADL is much better at playing his music than himself. When is the last time you listened to ADL play this piece?
Well,ok,sorry.I didn't mean it to sound so slighting, just RELATIVE to the fantastic composer's version.Of course i adore Alicia for her magnificent achievements and as a musical person.I was privileged to hear her in Goyescas(complete),for the last time in Palau de la Musica, Barcelona about 2002(not certain exact date, haven't got details to hand).Despite certain failings due to age,i was still mesmerised by her intimate relation with this music.
Hi, Great to know that we can get Granados own playing of El pelele- Could you please tell me the specific website address? I sincerely apprieciate it!
As an andalusian musician I have to confess I heard this music by many great different players, listening the real vision of the score by the composer and his genius as a pianist, the only comment that make justice is:I'm totally speechless.
Virginia after heard this roll record of your "compatriota" I have to say that it is the best "interpretation" of Fandango del Candil that I have ever heard...hay magia en esta interpretacion de Granados, parece que Granados presentia que seria su ultima vez a tocar esta Perla musical...no tengo palabras para expresar mi alegria de escucharlo a tocar como si fuese hoy....Muchas gracias a quien coloco este tesoro en youtube.....sin palabras!!!Carl O. Figenschou from Olhão Algarve Portugal
I understand this music roll made for the New-York-based Aeolian Company's "Duo-Art", and was made shortly before his death later in March of the same year (1916); it readily bears testament to his brilliant artistry as both a composer and pianist.
Viva Espana!

Sorry for the skepticism but this particular recording was not made in 1916 or during his lifetime.
The performance is very good of course.

Y 1 gran compositor y gran pianista

Granados was a great catalan musician as Albeniz, They compound any music inpired in adalusian folk music but learn and compound in Catalonia.
Grandos was a close friend of Pau Casals and they played toguether in Barcelona into a camera group for any years.
