that isn't porous enough!!!!!!!! pour a cup of water over it and see if it acts like a sponge. iv made some of this rock and to find the right porous to successfully house bacteria. i did not add the sand. best thing i used was CRUSHED OYSTERS {{ CHICKEN FEED}} with white cement with a 4/1 radio make your rocks in this method and it will be strong enough and porous enough to be live rock. ++ it was cheap cheap cheap

@cooljz82 what ? do you mean how do you measure the saly content ? in keeping reefs or salt tanks we use a hydrometer and measures the specific gravity and we use grams per liter ,,, ex 10 :22 would be 22 grams of salt per liter of water ,,, and yes it would be a good idea to first soak these in fresh water for a month then cure them in a healthy salt vat ,,, i keep my vat out side for the sun light ,, then bring it in doors ,,,
Hey guys, I was wondering whether there is a cement dye on the market that I could used to make live rock... There are plenty of dyes but some of them are very toxic...
hey thanks for the video I have made some rock and was wondering how often should you change the water when curing the rock I have just left the rock outside for about a month just letting the weather and some rain with the sun just trying to start it before I wast any money on the salt
Just FYI, the name of the company is Indo Pacific Sea Farms. They can be reached through thier website at ipsfDOTnet, or through thier nano lagoon series here on youtube.
but don't you need some live rock or live sand in the tank for stuff to grow on the man made stuff< or does it just start to grow from stuff thats already in the water or cement?
yes you can.just soak them in a water bleach solution.all you need is a 5 gallon bucket of water and hafe cup of bleach and 24 hours.clean with water really good.
hey Wayne, your rock looks fantastic! thanks for sending the video. I think you may be onto something with the Tonga branch technique. my wife and I just watched your vid -- she's worried about your table top getting scratched, LOL.
You did put some crushed aragonite in there, right? It shouldn;t matter in the long run i guess, but just wondering as IPSFDOTCOMS's "recipe" alls for it :)
IPSFDOTCOM is awesome. his man made live rock is great, you just have to make sure you cure it in some RO water to get the PH set up. Otherwise I think it looks great. I ended up buying dead rock simply because I didn't have the materials and space (or the weather) to make my own. When things warm up I will give a shot at making some of my own :)
thats good but u should use portland salt rock and crush oyster shell :)

Do you have to cure it in salt water if it's going into a saltwater tank? If yes, how do you make the saltwater, or how salty?

you can get it at a hardware store.
hotvws3 2 years ago
@hotvws3 Aren't the dyes toxic? Has anyone tried to use them in a fish tank.. It doesn't effect the water not fish??
What is the brand?

One thing to note is that you will have to put a diatom/bacteria starter into the tank to get things growing :)
