im thinking of getting one but we already have a jack russel in the house! and the health issues concern me..but i really want a big dog and so far great dane has been my fave! can anyone with experience tell me if is a good choice?
@rambohunt1 I reccomend you watch some Great Dane videos on youtube.. there are a ton. You won't notice much drool.. unless they just drank as I mentioned or were exercising extensivly.
@rambohunt1 Drooling should not be abundant in a Great Dane. I have been around Danes for 15 years and if he is drooling anything like a Mastiff then something is wrong. There are hobbiest breeders that breed what they call "Euro" danes. These danes are said to have a "Euro" look to them which means they look more Mastiff. Perhaps those drool more than the typical American style Dane. When I think of mastiff drool i think of shoe strings.. a Dane should not have that.
The only issue I take with this video is the "a lot of room rule". As long as you are willing to exercise your Dane everyday they are perfectly happy in smaller homes. I had my Dane in an appartment until he was 2 years old and he was happy as a clam.
ummm the great dane is from the hamburg-schleswig-holstein-fyn region... some of those where danish but taken by germany in 18?? or are still danish, and that means if julius cesar talked about them so long ago they are probably danis or "anglo-saxon"
I have a Great Dane/German Shepherd, and it's funny how many traits of a Dane she has. She's a lazy, leaner, and lovable dog who just wants to hug everybody.
But the German Shepherd in her makes her smart and extremely stubborn. She'll do what she's told...when she wants to, or if she knows she absolutely has to.
ive a great dane called sasha :) fawn in colour, she's now 6 she wil b 7 in may 2012 :) she's very fit/healthy, love her 2 bits, a very loving breed, lik a giant teddy bear, very smart,
How could anything be that ginormous be that much of a puppy? Whatever breeders worked they prey/ attack drive out of them did an awesome job, because I've never seen any breed more sweet and goofy!
@ginastarke2 when we go walking with our two danes in the local forestry plantation, the blue will dart after anything that moves (that is a sight) - usually a duiker - while the big black just stares. This could also be because he is a male...
My family had one when I was growing up. He lived for 10 years, 5 months. Danes make terrific pets. IMO they are an ideal breed for a family with young children. They are gentle, yet intimidating to strangers. Also very protective of the family.
I love my baby :) 6 months, 70lbs and a HUGE mama's boy. But very social and sweet. He only barks at things if I'm in the same area and he hears a noise. And he always meets me at the door when I come home. And he's a beautiful blue harlequin that I was sooo lucky to get for free and I can't imagine life without him
i have a great dane now >3< her name is fucking awsome :P but when my parents come over i have to call her awsome :3 she is so sweet! its unbearable XD she tries to sit in your lap and she ends up laying all over you..
i have a great dane now >3< his name is fucking awsome :P but when my parents come over i have to call her awsome :3 she is so sweet! its unbearable XD she tries to sit in your lap and she ends up laying all over you..
These dogs are so easy to fall in love with you need to be aware of their health issues and short life span. Our Dane is 5 1/2 years old and we may have to put him down because of a painful disease (in his case) called Spondylosis. Sad doesn't describe how heart broken I am. He used to run and play all the time, now when he moves wrong he cries out in pain.
Another thing: I recommend "free-feeding" to avoid bloat, which can come from having feeding-times for the dog, rather than simply allowing them to feed themselves as they decide. Just keep dry food in their dish at all times, and they won't be as likely to eat enough to bloat their stomach.
Great proof of the old "Gentle giant" saying. My aunt has a dog which is part great dane and it's an absolute monster of a dog - seriously, that thing could take down a shetland pony - but he's so sweet, and really lazy lol :D
"Gentle" as they want to be. If mine gets out at night, she can kill a full-size deer-- and then she EATS them. THAT's how powerful and aggressive a Dane can be, even a female.
Just because they're gentle with people and kids, you have to remember what they're capable of doing.
hey! i would really like to own a great dane some day, i live in croatia. the problem is that all the great danes in europe look different than the ones in the usa, the european ones's mouth area is sooo droopy, while the us ones don't droop as much, why is that? i personally think that if they are too droopy it looks ugly.
That difference is entirely within the breed; some have huge jowls, but some just small look like a Labrador's.
Just like some Danes can weigh 200 lbs, while some will weigh 100 lbs. at about the same height.
If you want to know what a Dane will look like full-grown, just look at the parents for a sneak-preview; a good breeder will have both parents available for you to look at.
@dotsrmyfavycandy We just lost ours 2 days before his 11th birthday. one of the hardest things I have ever dealt with. But if you put the time and care into them you can get longer lifes. It mostly comes down to proper feeding and steps taken when they are younger.
@lacrymist1976 Also, buying from a reputable breeder who does the necessary health screenings will increase your chances of getting a healthier dog. OFA/Thyroid/Eye/Heart tests run on the parents - grand parents and even great grandparents.
So are Marmaduke and Astro. They are living cartoon-characters. My life has been a "Marmaduke" cartoon since getting mine-- including the police bringing her home more than once!
My great dane is THE BEST dog I have EVER HAD! Although she does think she is a lap dog :p and I have to keep her from flopping down on my belly seein' how I am 23 weeks pregnant now LOL She is very protective of me now as well.
@MaMaRobynBird Does it have much for.. drool? I hope one day to own 2 to accompany me on walks and since I'm on the short side it'd sure look entertaining haha.
@Pslm91v14n15 She is over a year old now, so she is pretty big & no she does not really drool to bad. Of course after she gets a drink of water she has a bit of drool hehe but really it isn't bad. And they make WONDERFUL walking partners as well.
One of the best dogs in the world. A very gentle, calm, friendly and good natured dog that's always looking to please you. My first dog was a Great Dane and he was the best thing that happened to me.
My Sadie is such a strange dog. When shes on the couch with you its not easy. She gets right on top and gets her paws where you cant move. Then she goes outside and runs in circles like shes crazy.
My grandparents bought a great dane 2 months after I was born, and she was almost 13 when she was humanely euthanized.
Also, my parents got me a great dane when I was 5-6 years old, he passed away when I was 16 going 17. They truly are magnificent dogs, I miss my Great Dane very much, I held him when he died and it was the best thing I did for him.
I can't wait to move out of home and get a Great Dane of my own. =]
@10thStreetBlvd If you get one from a resque home they are usaully free and the charity will tell you honestly if they have any health or behavoural issue (this is how it works in the UK it might be different in the US).
My family have had three great danes all resqued and they have all been wonderful pets.
depends if you want a pet or show dog. I'm selling my great dane pups for $700. akc registered and all the shots. thats pretty reasonable for these dogs.
@warriorcatsLPSwolves You can find them as low as $400 up to $5,000, all depends on what you are looking for in color, breeding, etc.. They are the BEST pets you are ever going to own, very much people dogs and couch potatoes :)
@FattyDudley All Danes are different, just like people. Some are noisy/vocal. We have one that barks at nothing, one that shakes when she dreams, another that talks to us when we fool around with him, which is funny and makes you smile and he does snore, but it's not that bad. As said Danes are very much like people, and there all so very different.
Danes are NOT the best dogs overall; in fact people get rid of them more than most any other breed.
They need a LOT of room, and they are not the easiest to train. They can also do a lot of damage while they're teething, and they are not the most social with other dogs-- and in fact can be dangerous to them.
They are also very distrustful of strangers, and may behave aggressively toward someone they don't know.
@warriorcatsLPSwolves There are A LOT of rescued Great Danes. They have from puppies to adult ones. They are often abandoned because of their size....and ignorant people. If you really want one, you should visit a Great Dane Rescue!! They are very common. They are really cheap there, and get to have an opportunity again. :)
i think cropping ears is fine, as long as it's done professionally without any pain. On the other hand I fully detest cropping dog's tails, as that actually effects the dog's ability to communicate with other dogs and if it's been docked, it DOES cause the puppy a LOT of pain.
@Jonathanptnm14 If it's socialized properly, it will get along great with any dog/animal or person :) That goes for any dog with proper/careful breeding.
also they're prone to hip dysplacia, so they need, wholesome meat, extra calcium & vitamins to keep them healthy, also i recommend to give them a large bone to chew on each week && joint care treats 7 suppliments from the age of 5years upwards, as there life expectancy is 7years. thanx
its not hard at all to keep one. i have had mine for 9 years. hes the perfect guard dog, and pet. if you want a great dane get a full bread. mines has a pedigree, and we bought him when we went to brazil. they are so gentle and sweet. the worst part is that if you dont train the dog when you get it as a puppy it will never be how you want it. they are so hard to train when they are old. they need constant care and space.. if you are getting one good luck :)
If I get a Dane we car going to watch Scooby Doo all day. I'm disabled and so I'll be home a lot when my fiancee and I get married. I'm going to need company and he wants a larger dog. I like all dogs. If I do get a great dane I can guaranteed you it'll have a Scooby related name but not Scooby.
In the future I wish to get a Great Dane. Should I get a fawn or a black? I've always wanted a fawn Dane but after watching the SHAYTARDS and seeing Malachi, I wanted a black one. Help decide?
in case you are all wondering. the great dane was named by a Danish prince when he received one as a gift. he was marveld by the size of the dog and named the breed "Great Dane".
Im might sound a little dumb when i was child i would watch nothing but Scooby Doo and i always wish to own a Great Dane but my mom said no they to big!! Lolz XD
Wow, you're the owner of Northeast Great Danes!! I hope your Great Dane kennel will last long, even until I grow up and move to the US, and I can buy a Dane pup from there!!!
Great danes are the only breed of dog I have owned in 25 years. They are amazing! I will never own any other breed, wonderful with children and an amazing personality to match. EXCELLENT with kids! Fun and protective!
I have a great dane in a studio and it's plenty of enough room. I do have a yard for him to roam around in though so that helps. For all the people asking if it goes good with (insert type of dog here), mine gets along with everything. Not just dogs, but cats, rabbits, birds. I don't think he is capable of harming another animal.
@YawningBoy We have 4 Danes, 1 Golden Retriever, and 1 Golden mix. 6 total dogs, and we go through a 34 lb bag of Purina every 4 days roughly. At a cost of $28 per bag, so whats that, a little over a dollar per day per dog, something like that. :)
@FattyDudley All depends on the dog. We have four Danes, and only one drools, and thats pretty much only when she see's food. Its hit and miss when you own one. Maybe it will, maybe it wont. :)
@Jonathanptnm14 Dont know about GRs BUT i had a great dane and he grew up with my 2 cats and he had no probs with them. Believe it or not the cats beat the crap out of my dane! they also stole his bed all the time and he didnt mind so i think its safe to say that if the dane grows up with the goldie u shouldnt have any probs. Good luck with danes and i highly recommend Great Danes!! :)
@Jonathanptnm14 Danes are great with any dog as long as they are brought up with proper socialization. Get them from a good breeder, pay the big bucks, get the paper work and the health testing, microchipping and great breeder support and you're set. :)
@Jonathanptnm14 Great Danes are awesome, i have a 6 mth old Harlequin, she's my best friend. I have had alot of breeds and these by far are the best, I will never own another breed after having her.
@Jonathanptnm14 Great Danes are awesome, i have a 6 mth old Harlequin, she's my best friend. I have had alot of breeds and these by far are the best, I will never own another breed after having her.
@Jonathanptnm14 I had a golden my roommated had a great dane, they were best friends from day 1, I intially told him i didn't know if it was going to work but from the beginining it was great. I will say I think it was more my golden than the dane though, Great dane was not always a fan of other dogs
I have a tiger-print Great Dane named Henk with the personality of a Jack Russell. Makes for a very fun playing mate, but beware: if he's running towards you, do NOT jump out of the way, because they'll try to dodge you at the last moment. And let me tell you, a full speed tackle from a Great Dane sends you flying. Literally.
I love Great Danes,my all time favorite dog. After getting my 9 week old GD pup in June (Now 8 months old) I can not possibly imagine living without one. :) She has pet cropped ears (Beautifully done by the vet btw :) I am in love with the cropped look,it makes the Dane that much more regal. The natural look is nice too also, just my preference that I like the Cropped look more. :)I just want to put this out there that It's Completely up to the owner if they want to crop or not, their preference.
@TheBeastestTreeHouse Great dane was the 1st and the last dog I ever had, mine was a black with floppy ears.Despite her gender, her name was Bobby from her former owner and I LOVED her.And boy, does she likes "running over" people all the time...We had a wonderful 12 years before she died of natural death.I love big dogs, really BIG dogs, because I love to hug them. She was the best I ever had,I miss her so much.I wish I can see her again someday when I died,I would like to hug her again...
Cropping a dog's ears for aesthetic purposes is odious whether a vet does it, or not. It really isn't up to the owner. Do you think the dog wants it's ears cut off?
People that mutilate dogs should have their faces slashed- the vets and the owners.
For your information,it wasn't for cosmetic reasons. When she was a pup her ears would swell from awful infections and the vet said if it got any worse he would have to crop the whole ear off. So that's why I chose to get her ears cropped. Then thankfully, the whole ear infection and swelling went away and my girl is as happy as ever. what if the whole country bans cropping? then people would be doing it themselves.Cropping should only be done by a trained veterinarian.Owners choice.
@TheBeastestTreeHouse what if the whole country banned it? cropping of GD's is banned in most Western countries, including Australia where I live. It doesnt seem to be an issue here and i've never heard of anyone cropping their own dogs ears. You would have to be a total idiot to try that.
@1234Molotov Judgmental idiot. Why don't you go somewhere else and spill your poison. It really is up to the owner, isn't it? Facts are facts. You sound like a serial killer.
Yes, asswipe, I am judgmental when it comes to mutilating animals. If anyone is a sociopath it is people like yourself who think they can do whatever they want, even if it means hurting animals. That's how a lot of you people start out, isn't it? Having morals sometimes means NOT doing what you want.
@1234Molotov I'm gonna jump in this even though my mom posted the first comment because i lef my youtube up, haha. If you think that somebody is a sociopath for cropping there dogs ears, you are a fucking idiot, most people don't do it themselves and it's something they think is better looking. People like you should be serial killers targets, baby's get circumcised, does that make doctors sociopaths? Go crawl back in your cave, TROLL.
yes they can i have an 11 month old great dane and we have a six footh fence and she got over it into the house behind us ....we had to go round and ask could we get her ....she hasn't done that again :L
@nakyongkim - We have four Danes, and a six foot fence. If they could get over it, trust me they would. Yes they will jump a fence, especially anything lower than 4 feet.
im thinking of getting one but we already have a jack russel in the house! and the health issues concern me..but i really want a big dog and so far great dane has been my fave! can anyone with experience tell me if is a good choice?

@myvideos56 Hey I got a question on Danes. Are they noisy/vocal? Do they snore a lot?
FattyDudley 7 months ago
@FattyDudley All Danes are different, just like people. Some are noisy/vocal. We have one that barks at nothing, one that shakes when she dreams, another that talks to us when we fool around with him, which is funny and makes you smile and he does snore, but it's not that bad. As said Danes are very much like people, and there all so very different.
myvideos56 7 months ago 2
@FattyDudley mine only barked when playing or when the doorbell rang.

You also should NEVER let one off a leash.
Mine is a HANDFULL.
SovereignStatesman 5 months ago
@warriorcatsLPSwolves There are A LOT of rescued Great Danes. They have from puppies to adult ones. They are often abandoned because of their size....and ignorant people. If you really want one, you should visit a Great Dane Rescue!! They are very common. They are really cheap there, and get to have an opportunity again. :)
Please, RESCUE!

i think cropping ears is fine, as long as it's done professionally without any pain.

@myvideos56 how much does it cost to feed all of them?
YawningBoy 11 months ago
@YawningBoy We have 4 Danes, 1 Golden Retriever, and 1 Golden mix. 6 total dogs, and we go through a 34 lb bag of Purina every 4 days roughly. At a cost of $28 per bag, so whats that, a little over a dollar per day per dog, something like that. :)
myvideos56 11 months ago
@myvideos56 whoa so maybe around $210 a month. I don't blame you though i love dogs too. I used to have a lot of dogs too but at most 3.

plasticMD007 10 months ago
@Jonathanptnm14 Danes are great with any dog as long as they are brought up with proper socialization. Get them from a good breeder, pay the big bucks, get the paper work and the health testing, microchipping and great breeder support and you're set. :)

KyranSparda 1 year ago
@TheBeastestTreeHouse
Cropping a dog's ears for aesthetic purposes is odious whether a vet does it, or not. It really isn't up to the owner. Do you think the dog wants it's ears cut off?
People that mutilate dogs should have their faces slashed- the vets and the owners.
1234Molotov 1 year ago
@1234Molotov
TheBeastestTreeHouse 11 months ago 18
@TheBeastestTreeHouse what if the whole country banned it? cropping of GD's is banned in most Western countries, including Australia where I live. It doesnt seem to be an issue here and i've never heard of anyone cropping their own dogs ears. You would have to be a total idiot to try that.

@TheBeastestTreeHouse You probably would have had them cropped anyway. The ear infection story just sounds like a bad excuse.
RavenousChinchilla 9 months ago
@1234Molotov Judgmental idiot. Why don't you go somewhere else and spill your poison. It really is up to the owner, isn't it? Facts are facts. You sound like a serial killer.
iCherdoooHD 8 months ago
@iCherdoooHD
1234Molotov 8 months ago
@1234Molotov I'm gonna jump in this even though my mom posted the first comment because i lef my youtube up, haha. If you think that somebody is a sociopath for cropping there dogs ears, you are a fucking idiot, most people don't do it themselves and it's something they think is better looking. People like you should be serial killers targets, baby's get circumcised, does that make doctors sociopaths? Go crawl back in your cave, TROLL.
