  • Truely an american poet!

  • An absoltule drinking classic

"you said you hate my suffering and you understood. And youd take care of me. you'd always be there. well where are you noooooowwwwwww??"

  • @MsPrincessMeow1 I'm so sorry for Wat happened:( hope you feel better now and her family

  • i love this song to bad it helps me through sad times....thus reminds me of them....

  • Conor Oberst is my hero. I can not wait to meet you. My life would be complete.

  • @spenctheskater I often think the same thing... I'm friends with the felice brothers, and waiting for them to play with bright eyes so they can introduce me to conor

  • Whenever I am high aimlessly walking late at night smoking my cigg I imagine the lit up oval shaped doors as the cover of Fevers & Mirrors. Ahhh

  • i remember everything

  • well ha ha ha.

  • This is the last song my best friend listened to right before she stuck her head in a noose and took her own life - this song will always make me cry

  • @MsPrincessMeow1 wow thats sad

  • laughter pours from under doors in this house. I don't understand that sound no more. Seems artificial, like a T.V. set

    Favorite line.

  • ive been listening to this song for two or three years now and i still cant get over it.

  • I want to slap the girl who broke Conors heart for him to write this song, but also thank her because it helps to know that atleast someone else understands the pain.

  • this song sound beautiful with rain in the background :)

  • the words we say arent meant for anyone, its just a mumbled sentence to a passing acquaintance, but that was once you... I only listened to Bright Eyes because of my ex-wife, which sucks, cause he evokes emotions not healthy for thoughts concerning her... this is a vicious freaking cycle. sorry loop

  • @lbzhan1234 I'm still married, but I know not for how much longer. I've been listening to Bright Eyes, too, and share your sentiments about the unhealthy emotions that are evoked upon listening.

  • "Well where are you now?"

When he sings that, no matter what I'm doing, I am absolutely captivated.

  • omg an absolute classic!! this tune was stuck in my head for months!!!!!! fucking brilliant once again conor!!! once again i cant wait to see you play at hollywood forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @dayawakesupexhausted YOUR GOING TO HOLYWOOD FOREVER ON THE 23? :D ME AND MY GIRLFRIEND ARE GOING TOO <3 its going to be so beautiful because this will be my actual first concert(i mean i go to gigs but not actual concerts) and conor is the first i will go to, it will be perfect

  • @hippiefaced hopefully i see you there^-^ i seen him play before in pomona this is my second time seeing him play im superrrrr excited

  • my friend told me 2 listen 2 this cuz Im suicidal, it helped a lil! :)

  • @nofearmj But I still worshipped her. I never had a friend like her. She was an angel, then she turned into the devil.

Well, anyways... When I think about her at night, I can't stop crying. I can't even control it, and I don't want to, I just wanna get over it, ya know? But I never do. Oh well. You know we're in high demand, us people that suffer? ............

  • @nofearmj (first of all, I'm a girl, if that makes it a bit clearer)

This song just reminds me so much of my old best friend. She was my BESTEST (if that's a word) friend in the whole world. I worshipped her. And one day (Elliott Smith's death anniversary) she told me she never wanted to speak to me again because on my deviantart journal, I wrote about how I felt. I was really, really, depressed then. I don't really know WHY she didn't just try to help me, if she knew what I was going through.

  • this song gave me goosebumps throughout

  • um..Is it wrong to want to name a futer dauter Haligh? I mean it kinda feels wrong but its so pretty....

  • @CatieIvy If you were uncomfortabole with caling her that you could always call her something like hailey and say it was based on this song?

    Just a thought :)

  • @TheGumdropButtons Yeah...I mean I'm okay with it because I think it's nice sounding...I just don't her to hate me hahah!

  • @CatieIvy Go for it! Tbh, I hate my name because its so plain, I'd kill for something orignal :)

  • @CatieIvy I'm sure if ur daghter had such a sweet parent like you (who lieks bright eyes xD), she wouldn't mind x)

  • ima just say this straight up.. 4 people are stupid.

  • This is painful for me to hear. There was this girl, she was my best friend, and I really really loved her, and this was I guess, our 'song.' If you can say that about a friend. And then one day, I ws having a REALLY bad day, I wrote about it in a journal on Deviantart, then, she told me to never speak to her again. It happened months ago, almost a year ago, but it's still very painful for me to even hear her name. I loved her so much. Haligh, haligh, a lie haligh.

  • @heyjude97 what happened man? much respect

  • ugh, my absolute favourite. for like 12 years.

  • hmmm...reminds me of someone 2 yrs ago :/

  • You added this video on my birthday in '07, and it's the only one i ever click for that very reason lololol

  • This song sums up me previous periods of my life perfectly, the song is so personal yet relating to it comes with such ease. Connor Oberst it quite possibly my favorite lyricist ever.

  • So hard not to fall for this song :)

  • Thanks for the post. I haven't heard this song in a few years.

  • amazing song. I didn't realize that bright eyes did this type of music. It's a bit unexpected when the first song you hear from them is "first day of my life". I'm glad I found this though. Even better than what I thought I'd hear.

  • @ShadowChancellor Yeah, "First Day of My Life" was kinda a disappointment to true fans. Fevers and Mirrors, the album this song is from, is my favorite.

  • This is one of the best songs about being dumped... A genius use of music and words to convey the emotions that go along with it...

  • this my friends, is art, in its rawest form. conor is a genius, his music is so full of passion

  • the dog barking at 0:03 will stay with me forever

  • so much emotion in his voice :)

  • his name is conor. not connor. bright eyes isn't just conor, either. i love every band member equally <3

  • does any one else notice at 0:02 you hear a hammer bang on a peice of wood three times then two barks from a dog? it is there just turn you sound right up.

  • @lachlanSB ::witness::

  • @lachlanSB Also the phone of the hook noise

  • It's all I want to have a man like conor in my life.

  • @StephyPwns a man like connor or a man called connor?

  • @randmnumber Like him.

  • @StephyPwns ah darn it i thought i might have had a chance there

  • fav bright eyes song ever

  • You said you hate my suffering, and you understood, and you'd take care of me. You'd always be there. Well, where are you now?</3

  • but i talk in the mirror to the stranger that appears; our conversaions are circles, always one sided, nothing is clear.

  • The replay button gets raped once again. <3

  • See, Conor Oberst is REAL. His music is raw. He is not singing but telling his story. It's like he's not singing to someone, he's just reminding himself of all that has happened in his life. His voice is so unique and his mind is so pure. Sometime he sings an uplifting song like First Day Of My Life or sometimes he sings a mournful song like Padraic My Prince. I don't know, but he just really touches my heart. I love you Conor Mullen Oberst.

  • His Bright Eyes fans. I really love this song. An old friend of mine sent it to me about 4 years ago. I'm not sure if I dig ALL of Oberst's stuff but I love the style of this and I would really like song recommendations from Bright Eyes that are similar to this.

I appreciate any reply. Links to other videos would be cool too!

  • @HappilyWithMonotony you might like The Calander Hung Itself. But the album Fevers and Mirrors (which this song is on) is really great, and has the same kind of dark theme throughout most of the songs. I hope you find more music that you enjoy :) -Sam

  • haha my name is haleigh and i thot this song was called "haleigh haleigh a lie" but i gess not :(

  • I love this band. I'm glad Alex told me about them, even if I never got around to looking them up until after he died :/

  • connor writes beautiful lyrics

  • This was the first Bright Eyes song I ever heard. I've been in love ever since.

  • and I sing I sing of awful things (the pleasure that my sadness brings). Conor it s just so simply amazing

  • genius

  • this song made me think and the things that i thourght made me cry.

  • @lachlanSB I know what you mean...Conor Oberst always messes with my emotions like that...and the sad thing is that's the very reason why I love him

  • Poem Writer :Angel Arriaga : (to be continued from previous) i dnt knw wat i am i gues im my own category i call it ghost becuz im living like a ghost yea im a ghost boy livn life alone.

  • Speaking of dreams, I had a dream I was in the SEALs on a reconnaissance mission or something and we got discovered. I fell asleep listening to Sunrise, Sunset and that was in the background during a firefight.

  • And I sing and sing of awful things, the pleasure that my sadness brings, as my finders press onto the strings, yet another clumsy chord

  • Our love would never die

    Well, ha ha ha.

    <3

  • I've been told I sing like him in this, this is great news for me.

  • one of my fav bright eyes songs

  • I accidently played both of his songs at the same time it sounds very, good actually really confusing, but they match well.

This song, and I've been eating.

  • RIP CITY FOLK .

    <3

  • god damn, i always dont like lisen to this song because its makes me sad, biut its so beuitiful i keep coming back

  • @fulknawsm

    my exact thoughts

  • wow horrible i have never heard worse singing.

  • @0jacknapier0 Eat shit. :D Honestly, he's a true artist. He has more talent on the tip of his nose than you do in your entire body.

  • @ActuallyAdella how in the world is sounding like a drowning emo called artistic, wow its pathetic what people lable art latley i do not doubt the fact he can clearly play an instrument better than i because i simply cannot. with that said if i WAS high this wong would ruin my buzz, he vocals are atrocious and what worse is people who pretnd they sound good and truly think they do when they clearly dont. you know not what you are? i can tell you what you are not; a good vocalist.

  • @0jacknapier0 Just because his vocals are different doesn't mean he's not good. And you don't even know what my vocals sound like. You're an idiot. I'm not talking about his "instrument-playing skills." His lyrics are wonderful. They make you read between the lines. Just because you don't understand, doesn't give you the right to call him an "atrocious musician."

  • @ActuallyAdella obviously you are too stupid to realize the use of the word 'you'; in my argument was not a reference to you it was a generalized use, as in "people who truly believe they sound good when they do not" you see plenty of it on that "american idol" show. his lyrics may be good and meaningfull but god damn it if youre going to sing make sure your voice is bearable to more than the five morons who believe anything different is "inpirational" or " genious" when its really not.

  • @0jacknapier0 I think his voice is just fine. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. That simple.

  • @0jacknapier0 dude stfu (:

  • @0jacknapier0

In "Road to Joy" Conor says: "I could have been a famous singer if I had some one else's voice, but failures always sounded better, let's fuck it up boys, make some noise!" You can't compare Bright Eyes to American Idol, because their intention is not limited to pleasing ones ears. In the past people used to dismiss Van Gogh because his works weren't pretty enough. It's always the contemporary concept of art vs. the avant-garde, except that today every idiot thinks they're underground

  • @0jacknapier0 hmm... i wonder what its like being such a closed minded shithead...

  • @0jacknapier0 Oooh, I see whats happening here. You're jealous people find him inspirational... Well sorry to tell you. He is. A lyrical genius? Yes, he is that as well. Bearable to 5 morons? 152 likes in this video? Not 5? And this isn't his only song, soo... Yeah. You're not the world buddy, so speak for yourself. Comparing American Idol is fucking weak.

  • @0jacknapier0 His singing is a bit sketchy, but the lyrics are eccentrically amazing.

  • one of my favs to sk8 to

  • @Xblindsk8rX WHAt reallly? i skate and i was gonna put it on my ipod but it would just brind me down, tahts why i lissen to songs like "this old shoe-deer tick" and "good to sea- pinback"

  • @lachlanSB Hey, I love Pinback!

  • @LionsTigersAndTrouts Maybe we were meant to be friends, haha:)

  • so i just spent the first 20 or so seconds of this song trying to find the phone because i thought it was off the hook somewhere :P

  • met conner in 2004 in bloomington In. pretty cool cat

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE <3 this song ^-^

  • so im listening to this guys music for the past ten min or so and i cant help but notice the fact that this guy seems to be an upbeat and newer version of elliott smith?

  • sometimes i have to think 2wice about wht he'stalking abot in all fhis songs.

  • a lock of hair you said would prove our love would never die, well ha ha ha!

  • i love it!

depressing, though. my absolute favorite is "something vague" - pure brilliance.

  • Sobering, beautiful lyrics to the tune of Conor's chillingly great voice, magnificent.<3

  • love this song my fav. by them!!!

  • @LadieBonez good point but i also like the first day of my life

  • @LadieBonez *him

  • niiiiiiiiiiiiiice

  • take a bucket, dip it in my soul and splash it on the wall. Thank you Mr.Oberst you have done so much for me. Continue making this incredibly life changing music.

  • "You said you hate my suffering and you understood and you'd take care of me..."

Something about that line just breaks my heart. The more I listen to Bright Eyes, the more I love them. This song is amazing.

  • made me tear up almost.

  • Oh, me too. Every single time.

  • it's kinda incredible reading all these comments about how bright eyes has changed peoples lives. cause i totally know how you guys feel. sometimes bright eyes understands me. like nobody else does. they know how i feel.

  • I love this song soo much. It's my second favorite. The Calendar Hung Itself is my all time favorite!

  • I'm in love with the emotion in this. It's amazing.

  • Does anyone else think the backround vocals in the first chorus are kinda creepy?

  • lmao @ xlahoorah4

  • amazing...couldnt put it into words

  • Bright Eyes . My new obsession <3

  • This song makes me so sad.

  • I wish I could have seen Bright Eyes in concert around the time of Fevers and Mirrors, or Letting Off the Happiness, or even Lifted, but my friends and I were relative latecomers to the indie scene. Still, the ways in which this music impacted me... innumerable.

  • i have gotten that phone call,

thank god he wrote this song

giving my emotions words...it was used to keep the devil at bay long enough for me to move along down lifes path.

  • i don't understand that sound no more

  • This is the first Bright Eyes song I ever heard. I was just like "what. is. this."

  • beautiful!!,<3333##

  • I love this song. <33 So touching.

  • beautiful

  • Cause you're soft?

  • deep.

  • what exactly is haligh

  • A name maybe? I dont know either =P

  • whatever you want it to mean, that's how I feel about it.

  • this song is my favorite it always makes me feel better. i cant live my life no more

  • Favourite Bright Eyes song ever.

Captured me the first time i heard it.

  • This song is so beautiful!

  • i had this dream last night that connor oberst played at my birthday party, and after we were having this conversation, and i was like could you teach me how to play haligh haligh a lie haligh, and he was like, i will next time, and he left.

  • Next time? That means he wants to see you again!!! If only it were true..

  • LOL that is the saddest story i have ever heard. i'm so sorry hahaha

  • That is a really cool dream.

  • Wow, he doesn't seem like a nice person. Hehe..

  • Haha I would probably wake up crying if I had that dream. I would've hoped that it actually happened.

I only had a dream about seeing him run around some random neighborhood for 5 seconds. then he disappeared haha.

  • it is a pretty hilariously inane thing to say right here

  • @Caydennt You're high.

  • @Caydennt thats funny i had a bunch of dreams about him. i had one that it was in the city and the streets were really crowed and conor comes down the escelator and i notice him and he looks so clean like sober and happy a conor i never heard of.

  • This song reminds me exactly of my past relationship, such a good song, yet it makes me so sad, Conor is truly a gifted writer, I wish I had the ability to express my thoughts into songs like he does, simply perfect.

  • You know, they have more humane methods of euthanasia for animals.

  • Then again, his username is "future wolf."

  • lulz. I don't know if this post is true (futurewolfs, I mean) but this reply cracked me the hell up. :)

  • how is that funny?

  • what the hell

  • What the fuck?

  • Sweet!

  • he explains things that i assume many people feel so perfectly.

  • Oh how this song explains everything. Thank you Connor Obrest for this.

  • This song is amazing...and the vibraphone makes it 10 times better :D

  • ok every time i try to download this song i can't find it or it's not the song can anyone help?

  • WANNA HEAR A JOKE?

    okay.

Two pinguins are on a fridge. One of them asks "Can i push you?" the other one answers "NO!"

    AHAHHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAH!

now u shud put your socks in an oven and run 78 times in little circles singing a happy birthday song.

  • what

  • i can't be the only one who is puzzled by this

  • NEVER put a dark green lizard in an oven, or it will DIE ='(

  • wouldn't any color lizard die in an oven?

  • thank you so much. next time i'm putting lizards in an oven i will make sure to spare the dark green ones.

  • lolwut.

  • thank you for this. I watch it all the time

  • This song is amazing...

  • I wish i had the talent of conor. He is just so amazing theres no other word to describe his work.

  • he is amazing (; simply amazing, ad his words are simple yet so perfect.

    everything about it, is perfect.

  • this makes my cry... i love it!
