They get pushy when they only have one thing to think about. Most of the time that is begging. With the click you have them do many things for the click, then the food as a reward. You take begging off of the only thing they think of when you bring food out. . At first they will beg a bit until they figure out that they don't get clicked for begging. If you don't use Clicker Training, they might think of begging, since they have no idea what you want them to do.
I have a large pony that I rescued, she is over all very good, but when you go to mount her she starts bucking, (she is vet checked & safe to ride). I would like to start her on clicker training, but she is already grabby and pushy when it comes to treats...how do you deal with that when you are training...not to be grabby or demanding with the reward?
I watched your video when I got my first horse. He was untrained and I was at a loss. I used what I saw in your videos and turned him into an almost dead broke trail horse in 35 days and I have no prior experience. I couldn't afford a trainer so I had to make the best of my situation. Great video. This technique taught my horse to trust me as I wasn't going to hurt him.
Leslie: are you going to post a video on training a youngster to take a bit AND on the bit you recommend. I'm grateful for learning about the pinchless bit from you. Judy
Most make their own targets. Mine is a t-post topper on a stick. As long as your horse is not a afraid of it, and they can see it. You can use anything you like. I do have Parelli Training.
May I ask: I see all the click training like this, you give the treat away from the body. Is this so they don't associate it to you so they don't beg and push against you? Very neat video!
