OK, if you're preparing for an attack with a weapon, does not mean, that you're prepared for it _mentally_. Try to touch people quickly one after the other. You'll be quite shocked to see their inability to react, and that is because they're not bodyguards, who was preparing for that for years. Ask a soldier how was that, when he had been shot at, at the first time.

So I think having a gun won't help you in a quick, suprise-attack, just fight-experience and reflexes.

I don't know how i feel about gun control. Honestly i think it's difficult to have an opinion. I've seen the devestating effects on both sides of the argument. There really doesn't seem like a solid solution. The problem is personal responsibility. The issue is mainly centered around guns because they have a tendency to be very good at killing people...the same could be said for poisons, chemicals, or other hazardous stuff. I'd like to own a gun for protection, but I'd be afraid I might use it.

the problem isn't the weapons, it's people wanting to kill each other. However, it's much harder to kill somebody if you're only armed with a piece of string, and the person has a greater chance of self defense. Classic argument goes: man with gun vs man without gun. So unless everybody is going to be armed at all times, the murderer has a much higher chance of killing his victim. Effectively an armed society is a society at war, so I would recommend guns not being publicly available.

You forget that when you disarm the population, you're only disarming the civilian population and not the criminal population. In fact, the criminal population are criminals and don't follow the laws anyway. Unless you can start a campaign to undeniably exterminate the criminal population, their genetics, and any possibility of them coming back. Disarming the civilians while making it easier for the armed criminals to kill unarmed civilians is in every sense of the word, backwards reasoning.
