GAH! I can NOT believe this show was recorded. Thanks for posting! Besides getting to hear this great show, I also had the pleasure of talking with Joe afterward and buying the new (at the time) Virtuoso #3 album from him.
How did he find all of those wonderful notes...and send them out in such perfect order..what an intellect..what a talent..what a picker..amazing virtuosity...and what a memory..!!
Well, I like Christian, but I wouldn't say he played bebob, his style was something in between. What Pass playes here is pretty close (for a guitarist) to what Parker used to play like.
@bigafromusclekid I love Charlie Christian, but he puts me more in mind of Lester Young than Charlie Parker. Charlie Christian was kind of swing era heading towards bebop. He was part of the Minton's scene, a hotbed of early bop. I wish he lived longer, it would have been interesting to see how he played later in life.
@sonofrest I agree. Charlie Christian wasn't playing bebop. Joe Pass on the other hand dedicated himself (like many players back in the day) to sounding exactly like charlie parker. Of course, I would say Joe Pass sounds like Joe Pass above anything else, but the charlie parker influence is totally there! Charlie Christian played in a different style in a different era. Bebop wasn't even alive when he hit the scene.
Absolutely incredible. My favorite musician. I wish there was a video of this. This audio brings back so many memories. I loved watching him play. Thanks for posting this. You did good.
Wow, never heard this before! Do you think Pablo have exhausted the vaults on Joe Pass live /unreleased material?

If Bird had been a guitar player, maybe that's what it would have sounded like.
