better than memoirs of a geisha which was a shithouse movie that wasnt even filmed in japan at all. 70% of japan is mountainous i wished they filmed the last samurai there
In one hand there is the different aproach to defeat by 2 cultures. For Ujio was good enough to disarm Algreen, for him it would be humiliating enough, but of course Algreen comes from a culture "were there is life there's hope". But there is also Algreen desire to die, so we don't really know what is Algreen up for, is he going at it like "Never give up" or is he going at Ujio like "give all you got, i don't care about shit anymore, i embrace my end fighting" And ...
@lusonicolusonico ...And defiance in face of defeat is samurai! Like in the end before battle where they all laugh defiantly while say the other side would not surrender. So Algree is really a samurai, his life had no value to him, he searched something meaningfull and not simply "be alive".
That's why he wanted to die in the shooting range when said to the soldier to shoot him, that's why he was drinking himself to death. He was a samurai spirit even before meeting the samurai.
This scene and message is telling to us all about human spirit... I'm white man, but I adore Japan... old Japan... maybe some day I will find a spirit I'm looking for there or maybe I already found it inside myself, like many of you should do the same... what is life, what is death, if not a feeling we all feel while watching this.
I say the best scene is when katsumoto goes to the council in tokyo wearing his daisho (two swords) and he refuses to give it up. and realizes the emperor is disgracing everything his ancestors fought and died for by doing nothing about it.
Algren not giving up was probably intriguing to the samurai of the village. they did a really good job with this movie. It was really a "Read between the lines" kind of thing.
I realize the best scene is based on opinion but I will still say that I think the best scene is the on where katsumoto explains Bushido. "We are all dyeing to know.......life in every breath...in every cup of tea...every life,we take............That is Bushido."
most Japanese male actors practice in TATE(stage combat) where they learn how to do a fight with katana. Sanada Hiroyuki may not be the best at it... but he sure killed in this movie, every scene with him in it is one of the best in movie history(at least in action movie category)
Actually this movie is so full of "BEST SCENES" that it's really difiicult to tell which one is the best :). I guess that if any one of us elects a different "BEST SCENE", we all will be right :)
Boken hurt man... no way he could take that punishement. Seriously that big slam to his back would keep him down. regardless of his pride, or determination.
What I meant was that I think Ujio saw the Samauri spirit in Tom Crusies character, He didn't "give up" and fought until he could not. Were this a real fight ,Ujio saw and respected the "fight to the death" attitude displayed by this "foreiner" The respect showed later when Cruise came out in the red uniform of the man he killed. Ujio looked at, then nodded approvingly at him.
@Hambone57 algren is tests his western swordmanship against the kid's local one. ujio is angry thinking algren is looking down on their sword style. he steps to prove algren is inferior. it's a clash of culture reflection, swordsmanship style being the cultural difference. see algren does't attack the kid, only repels it, reflecting on algren attempt to examine their culture carefully. ujio attack on algren reflects anger on west culture that cause japan to scorn their ways as old and inferior
@Hambone571 i thinl it was also to remind every one that he is still the enemy and was mabe reminding every 1 in the village :) the music goes so well in that scene
@Hambone571 Possibly...I think the main theme in this scene is the fundamental difference in philosophy between the two cultures. Algren's culture has taught him that "if at first you fail, try try try again", ie never give up, which is completely foreign to the Samurai. That's why Ujio's face expression is angry the whole scene, but also confused/surprised at the same time at his constant getting back up.
@topherno Precisely. It was to illustrate the difference between seppuku / hari kari when you are defeated... and NEVER accepting defeat until you can't walk, can't talk, can't breathe, can't see, can't move.
what the name song?

You should not forget that he actually didn't want to beat him up. He actually wanted to leave after he disarmed him.

For anybody who cares, the title of the movie does NOT refer to Tom Cruise's character; it refers to Katsumoto and his warriors.
