When I heard this song and 'There There' advertised prior to its release, I was like "yeah Radiohead are back". It's like Thom picked up the guitar again which I thought he was never going to do after friggin' Kid A et al.
There must be something magical in this album because when I was listening this album during I made my maths homework I understood things that I haven't understood earlier.
I probably make up about 3000 views of communist's (especially hail to the thief) radiohead from my super stoned all the time days. I was stoned or high constantly for like 2 years straight back in the day.
@Sage80 This song is a reference to George Orwell's 1984. This is novel is one of the few brilliant pieces of literature written in the 20th century written as a retort to his professor's novel (also a brilliant read) A Brave New World. Anyways my point is. The main character refers to this 2+2=5 in context to the idea that nothing is always what it seems. This is definitely the case for the protagonist in the novel. Definitely should give it a read if you have not!
You know, it’s social commentary on dogma. By that I mean a powerful government/religion telling you what the right answer is, and you not questioning it………………..
It’s a famous book reference. In the novel “1984” the police go around asking people 2+2 to test their loyalty/obedience. If they don’t say “5” they are punished/arrested/executed.
You see, the people knew the logical answer was 4. But because of the control and power of the dictatorship government, they override their own logic, and say the wrong answer
I miss the dark, inhumanly good Radiohead.... The two last albums didn't quite do it for me :/ it's of course a positive thing that Thom dealt with his depression but it did have a great impact on their music.
@olavm91 i completely agree with you. the last two albums were good but they didnt nearly have an impact on me as their first 3 albums. pablo honey, the bends, and o.k computer. in my opinion its hard to choose which album is the best outta those 3...but the the bends has helped me through tough times in my life. such a beautiful album.
@Sage80 I've noticed you trolling about a number of Radiohead videos making angry little comments and trying to pick fights--go be happy somewhere, love, like perhaps a Metallica video. You seem to be rooting for those wash-outs (Lulu? Really?) ... How's about giving it a try, eh?
its more a play on english language than on mathematics...if everyone were to say 2 + 2 = 5 then it would, because maths (or at least our perception of maths - what we call the numbers and how we write them) is man-made so if everyone says something else it will become it
In the book, “1984” the police test citizens, by making them answer the question 2+2. If they don’t answer 5, they are punished. It was a test of loyalty/obedience to the state.
So even though they knew it was logically wrong, 5 became the correct answer, as the state said so. It became dogmatic.
You know, Radiohead are very clever guys. It's obviously some very clever commentary on putting too much faith in governments/religions
The people arguing about 2+2 = ? are completely missing the point of the song - that people cannot draw the line between the stuff that is told to us which is false and the stuff which is true.
@qwert4327able actually it can. We all count and do math in base ten. But if we did math in a different base like base two, counting would be different. 2+2=10 in base two so in some base, two plus two equals five. ;)
Required to prove : 2+2=5 Easy So 2+2=4=5 Since if 4=5 then 4-4.5=5-4.5 ie -0.5=0.5 square both sides and you get 0.25=0.25 which is true so 2+2=5 yay logic!
@flame0154 na this is wrong man - no logic to it at all. All you've shown is that if 4=5 then this implies 0.25=0.25. This doesn't prove 4=5. Im a maths student and I can tell you there is no way of proving 2+2=5.
@qwert4327able haha mate. I am fully aware of that. I am in my third year of uni (physics major) and i have taken MORE than enough maths courses to know THAT! i was being tongue in cheek - what i commented is, as i am sure you are no doubt aware, the classic example of the converse fallacy.
@MCshlthead Plz don't... If this streak can keep going till November 20th then we can say that we have been paying attention, but if it doesn't... then we lose. So stack up pancake mix and fresh salami.
@xXBronzedBalletXx there isn't like they would listern! saying somthing like all music is equal gos against there values. there aren't that many people that rationalize it though. no matter if the person is fake didn't wright the song didn't play any instruments or even sing it the song it can still be enjoyed but people have to make excuses why they like certain music so they feel they have personality.
@tim0090 It is true that people love to put other things down in order to feel like the things that they love are somehow precious and on a higher frequency than other's interests.
@KombuchaSoundz Shut up and listen to the music you hot head asshole. That guy wanted to ask what albums people like, and you call him a fagot and tell him to listen to the music you love?
