They are Canadian timber wolves and they are bigger, more aggressive and hunt more often than the native wolves. The government was too lazy to rebuild the native population so the opted for the cheap and easy way out by introducing a non-native species which has not bred out of control and is overhunting the prey animals.

@Ddubya77 i dont live in wolf country but i do live with 2 wolves i also live by a cattle farm..my wolves break loose all the time..and they have yet to harm the farms cattle..they run past like it isnt even there..and its not wolves doing it..its coyotes..they are more bold and aggressive then wolves..wolves have the strength and all but coyotes have the boldness and aggressiveness to actually try to attack large animals and kill ppls dogs..ive seen it here...there coyotes running everywhere
@timteresa Your wolves are not REAL wolves. If they're well fed and are in captivity they have never had to kill for their food. They don't have anything mentally in common with a wild wolf. Coyotes do damage in most parts of the country, and they are killed so their numbers can be controlled too. I had a wolf pack kill a whitetail about 50 yards in front of me. I couldn't see them, but I sure as hell heard the deer screaming. They ate very little off that deer when I checked it the next day.

In Idaho,Montana, and Wyoming they have documented the damage wolves are inflicting on their big game herds. They have determined that 23 elk or deer are killed per wolf a year. One pack of eight wolves kill 184 big game animals a year. This means they are killing every two to three days. They also document "fun" kills which are animals that aren't fed on.
@Ddubya77 23 elk or deer per year is not that bad, considering the average number of wolves left in the wild is less than 10,000, with now only 42 red wolves. And only about 172 of those wolves are in Yellowstone, the biggest concentration of wolves. There is millions and millions of deer right now (because they're aren't enough wolves to hunt them in the central to eastern states).
@Ddubya77 So, if there's about 172 wolves in Yellowstone, with 9,000 elk, and each wolf kills only 23 elk per year, that means there's only an estimated 3800 elk killed per year. Which is a bit over 1/3 of the total population. But the fact is, the elk population will always have a low point and a high point. That's how it works. The wolves eat, their numbers get large, and the elk get smaller. But after a while, the wolves start to shrink a bit, and the elk are back to normal populations.
@Ddubya77 And remember, Elk are not the wolves only prey. There's buffalo too. that takes the number of elk killed by wolves in yellowstone by atleast one or two thousand. And don't forget the smaller mammals like hares and mice

There's also loner wolves, who can't hunt as efficently, and loner wolves make up about 15% of the total population. Which means that 25-26 out of the 172 Yellowstone wolves can't hunt as well as the packs, which means they must take small prey or scavenge.

Also, the huntings in order to protect livelihood are NOT the problem. This is inevitable and must happen. They are Canadian timber wolves and they are bigger, more aggressive and hunt more often than the native wolves. The government was too lazy to rebuild the native population so the opted for the cheap and easy way out by introducing a non-native species which has not bred out of control and is overhunting the prey animals.

Those animals would also be fine, because they have other things to feed on.

@Ddubya77 i dont live in wolf country but i do live with 2 wolves i also live by a cattle farm..my wolves break loose all the time..and they have yet to harm the farms cattle..they run past like it isnt even there..and its not wolves doing it..its coyotes..they are more bold and aggressive then wolves..wolves have the strength and all but coyotes have the boldness and aggressiveness to actually try to attack large animals and kill ppls dogs..ive seen it here...there coyotes running everywhere

@timteresa Your wolves are not REAL wolves. If they're well fed and are in captivity they have never had to kill for their food. They don't have anything mentally in common with a wild wolf. Coyotes do damage in most parts of the country, and they are killed so their numbers can be controlled too. I had a wolf pack kill a whitetail about 50 yards in front of me. I couldn't see them, but I sure as hell heard the deer screaming. They ate very little off that deer when I checked it the next day.

In Idaho,Montana, and Wyoming they have documented the damage wolves are inflicting on their big game herds. They have determined that 23 elk or deer are killed per wolf a year. One pack of eight wolves kill 184 big game animals a year. This means they are killing every two to three days. They also document "fun" kills which are animals that aren't fed on.

@Ddubya77 23 elk or deer per year is not that bad, considering the average number of wolves left in the wild is less than 10,000, with now only 42 red wolves. And only about 172 of those wolves are in Yellowstone, the biggest concentration of wolves. There is millions and millions of deer right now (because they're aren't enough wolves to hunt them in the central to eastern states).

@Ddubya77 So, if there's about 172 wolves in Yellowstone, with 9,000 elk, and each wolf kills only 23 elk per year, that means there's only an estimated 3800 elk killed per year. Which is a bit over 1/3 of the total population. But the fact is, the elk population will always have a low point and a high point. That's how it works. The wolves eat, their numbers get large, and the elk get smaller. But after a while, the wolves start to shrink a bit, and the elk are back to normal populations.

There's also loner wolves, who can't hunt as efficently, and loner wolves make up about 15% of the total population. Which means that 25-26 out of the 172 Yellowstone wolves can't hunt as well as the packs, which means they must take small prey or scavenge.

We have the largest population of wolves in the lower 48 at numbers reaching almost 4,000 wolves. Our wolves are not endangered, but they are in fact decimating deer populations in this state. 172 wolves in Yellowstone is nothing. I don't hate the wolf, but the wolf must be controlled. I don't want them eradicated.

@TheBlueRainWolf Loner wolves?? You know what they call a lone wolf, a dead wolf. In MN every square mile of land in the northern part of the state is inhabited by wolves. Those wolves have established their territories long ago, and any intruding wolf will be killed by the pack. They kill people's dogs here all the time because the wolf views them as trespassers. Wolves are beautiful, but they are wild and ruthless. They kill to kill, and I've seen it. It's sometimes quick but usually not.

i never said my wolves kill for their food.i dont even let them kill anything they get loose and they run to the woods and fields then run back to me.they dont kill for just to kill they eat everything.i gave my one wolf one roadkill deer and he ate everything even the bones still has them to this day and he got that deer last year and there still bone around he chews on..and coyotes are far more aggressive than a wolf.they are the child killers theres documents on that..none on the wolf
