he only wants to win her back so he can be with her again. sheesh. it'd be nice to say that us common folk don't do stupid crap like this, but we do, don't we? this movie is fantastic. *sigh*
it's so hard to explain, but there's both vacancy and passion in glenn's eyes at the same time. she truly terrifies me when she plays villanous roles.
John Malcovich is priceless in this movie! His character clearly was/is in love w/ Michelle Pfeiffer & he threw it all away for Glen Close, that's what broke my hear. It's all a game, but in the end people got hurt. He did such an amazing job--they both did. This movie was well done.
Comparto la opinión de que la actuación de Glenn Close es una clase de interpretación en toda regla. Fantástica, no creo que haya habido ni que haya otra actriz que borde este papel como ella. Y por supuesto John Malkovich también es un pedazo de actor
It's so sad, watching Valmont in this scene watching him realise how much he'd lost and all for the sake of this woman's maliciousness and his own vanity.
@heybells2004 To masturbate with the image of an actor or actress in mind does not count as a valid element when it comes to compare them with other artists. You really should keep your ignorancy in the craft of acting confined to your own moments of selfgratification. Just saying.
Something like this just happened to me... a man very much like the John Malkovich character Valmont. I wonder if he watched this show and then did this to me.... or if some things about some men never change.
I could have become sick and died like the Michele pfieffer character, but i am ok
See the context of this tightly controlled time. What Merteuil and Valmont are threatening each other with is exposure. Both had their genuine natures revealed in an age where keeping up appearances was paramount, and both were destroyed, one literally, the other societally.
See the context of this tightly controlled time. What Merteuil and Valmont are threatening each other with is exposure. Both had their genuine natures revealed in an age where keeping up appearances was paramount, and both were destroyed, one literally, the other societally.
Okay....I adore colin firth and think everything he does is wonderful....he isn't over the top and keeps the parts he plays understated and real. However, in the war of the better valmont I am afraid the winner would have to be Malkovich. Valmont is a bastard which both men pull off however, Malkovich brings the creepy factor which takes the part to perfection.
You are joking?? Colin Firth is wonderful in many of his roles, but John Malkovich IS Valmont. Colin's Valmont was too 'nice'... and Valmont was not a nice man. John Malkovich was perfect in this role, as was Glenn Close as Merteuil.
@BellaBarossa If anyone IS Valmont, it would be Alan Rickman, the one who originated the role on broadway, and the who should have gotten the role in this movie. Malkovich's Valmont is a horrible actor. He always comes off as the deceitful schemer, even when he's supposed to be wooing Tourvel. In this movie, I had no idea why Tourvel fell in love with him, because he was so obviously playing her. Valmont is a better actor then that. We SHOULD like him when he's turnings the charm on.
Darkhotanddeadly, Merteuil promised to Valmont that if he wins Madame de Tourvel's love, he could spend a night with Merteuil. They were in love before and if Valmont is totally crazy when he orders to her this night, it's because Tourvel is totally down-hearted for the moment where he left her. He doesn't want to leave Tourvel for nothing
@Darkhotanddeadly you have much to learn, that can't be in one single youtube phrase, and even reading the literature may do nothing for you -- D. H. Lawrence, Proust, Dangerous Liasions, St Augustine, Chaucer --if you do not open your mind and see that there is more to human sexuality than the confines of what you now know will allow.
Get off your high horse and tone down the offensive nature of your pride. Just because you fancy yourself an itellectual becaue you've read books by authors who you feel are important doesn't give you the right to treat people as if they are below you. It's a pity that while you were learning the works of all the authors you listed you didn't teach yourselves some manners. Simply answer Darkhotanddeadly's question and move on, there's no need to be insulting.
@darkhotandeadly, the Marquise is a mature woman of some experience, the very worldliness, charm and sophistication of her is as great an aphrodisiac to a man as sheer youth in the young but gullible Cecile.
Brilliant scene with some thought-provoking lines. SO sad for a man to love a woman like that and then break her heart (MichelleP), not realising exactly how much she meant to him.
I'm going to find the book "Clarissa" and read it. Thanks, vickytaspartan! Also: does anyone remember Livia from "I, Claudius"? Siân Phillips would have ripped this scene to shreds as the Marquise she was so genius! Get chills just thinking about it.
Interesting comparison between Livia and the Marquise. Both characters were born in a time where the world was run by men, so these ambitious women became respective masters at ruling their roosts by manipulating men's weaknesses. I've always thought if Livia and the Marquise were men, they would have been just as corrupt (if not worse) than the men they manipulated.
ahh to have the money with the power to manipulate and control others to entertain you! God sure knows what he is doing by keeping me poor. I thinbk I would be dangerous if I were rich! money is the root of peoples crule and inmoral actions for supeiror delusions of grandger. geez I can't spell anymore
my french teacher wwas looking wxactly like madame de merteuil . and oo fcourse she was as villanious as her . when she says that line about vicomte being ashamed of his love for tourvel is as if i hear my teacher umiliating me for not doing my homework...
God, what a bitch! here's what you do...do your homework and talk about it often with your family. when they go into class speak well of your teacher in front of your family and how well she's taught you, when she tries to fail you or criticize your work, indirectly slam her teaching by saying "I probably would have understood this better had the message been more thorough. I believe that the student is only HALF the grade...." SHE'LL HATE YOU FOR IT! If she gets out of line, report her!
Some things might never change, this whole script could be set in the 21th century for sure.... in Manhattan I might ad, never mind that, it's been taken care of even as I wrote this down...It's the cast they can never for fill in the way this movie rocked :-D
Close was obviously MADE for this role. Her single greatest performance to date. And this scene is incredibly written. Generally speaking, the fact that this was written by a man is great because it speaks so directly to and about women. Definietely one of my favorites!
