France was only successful during a time when most European top leagues were getting too many foreign players. Italy and Germany were both weaker at that time. Easter European soccer (Yugoslavia, Romania, USSR) didn't exist anymore. The only other good European sides at that time were Holland and Portugal and they weren't as great as Italy and Germany were in their prime. When France starts winning sports, you know that particular sport is in a crisis.

@adirockboy Zidane was better than Beckenbauer and Cruyff? I wouldn't even say that he was the best French footballer (though he's really Algerian) of all-time. That was Michel Platini. Zidane played during a time with relatively little competition. Teams like Germany and Italy (who ruled European football before) were all in a crisis. Portugal and Holland were the only ok teams in Europe and they weren't even great.
