I think one reason why this movie was given some bad reviews is because the children are so under developed and unrealistic. They didn't seem to care at all that their mother was leaving. Sure, some kids are so spoiled that they just care about material things, but there was really no indication that they were ever really spoiled before they came into Mary's care.
