I know project 99 or whatever is recreating EQ through Vel. Sounds great, I wish they would have left the original game at that point as well. Shadows of luclin "updated" the models and downgraded the game... It was the beginning of the end.
As tempting as the 99 server is, there is no way that I can put myself back through the EQ grind. We used to invest so much time into eq, it actually took on a real emotional dimension. There was some magic in the original EQ that will never be recreated .
This music played when you stood next to the rogue poison vendor who stood on the peak of the island in the middle of Dagnor's Cauldron. I always visited him before I went to Unrest.
I rember going on a boat trip from freeport to another city (can not rember wich one now) with a friend just because thay needed an enchantment spell that could help them. and that was just the start of the trip it took another 3 hours after we hit the correct stop to get to the city. ahh memories of the good old days when gamers where more "outcasted" and games where not so kind in death on the players.
You know what my favorite thing about this game was? The community! It seemed like the average player in EQ 1 was a whole lot nicer and willing to chat/group than people these days in WoW. This game was about having fun, and it accomplished that goal incredibly well.
This is one game where the term "Just a game" wasn't ever valid. Old school EQ players lived to play it lol, I remember taking days off from work with a buddy of mine (RIP) when Velious expansion came out. Not many games create so much nostalgia like EQ did and I don't think there ever will be a game to mirror it... other than playing EQ on a EQemu server lol
Everyone come over to project 1999! It is a free to play classic everquest server! It boasts 800+ players at peak times! It recreates the classic experience up to velious. Kunark was just released 3 months ago.
Ocean of tears for the motha fuckn win.......... i jumped off the boat because i thought it would be fun ....... got lost........ killed by a shark.... it was awsome !!!!!
I am tearing up! I played the shit out of this game. Middle-school, highschool it was amazing. I didn't have time in college for the grind fest that it was so I went to WoW when it came out. I so miss it.
Finally I'm on the boat...and I'm bored jumping through the deck..
*Entering Ocean of Tears...* Ok, time to go eat a sandwich.
*splash* Oh crap, boats gone! Gahhh shark!
\corpse laying on the bottom of the ocean
God I miss this game! It was never about grinding to max level as fast as possible, and always gave you so many directions you could go to play. I've played here recently and it just isn't what it used to be =*(
Oh damn, listening to this brings back so many memories. Sitting there on a boat, waiting for your next destination, for many long minutes. The best part? You're there with others, check each other out, maybe chat a little. If you sat down, you noticed you drifted slightly as time went on, so you position yourself near the mast and it coasts you to the top. Now you had a bird's eye view, and you could shout to your buddies down below that you're nearing your destination. Good times, good times.
hahah god soon as the music started playing a huge smile came across my face god i miss eq i remember dying by falling off the boat and not being able to find my corpse for like 3 days
As satanic and torturous as the original EQ was, it was at it's best right from the start. I personally didn't even like the introduction of Kunark, but the game definitely went downhill after that.
i hate this theme so much , i member when i was goin to fv for one a the 1st few times long ago and somehow i still dont kno how i fell off the cotdam boat and i panicked but wasnt able to get back on so i swam around over an hour tryin to find the zone line . a few times i member seein below me in the water some sharks and i was like oh godddd help me cos i knew if i died there was no way i was ever goin to find my body again in the water
@jogu78 Haha I've been in that same situation!!! I had to message my druid friend back in the day and I gave him my /loc and he came and ported me out of there..whew. Damn what memories.
SOE knew that there EQ fans were so loyal that they would buy any and every expansion that they released. And for a while they (we) did. Shame they killed the game that we all loved in the process
I agree. Also, the fear of dying in EQ1 was actually something to truly fear.
Games today are way too soft on death and travel. The sad thing is, people today are so babied by WoW and other MMOs today that if this concept was incorperated into today's MMOs people would bitch and whine like you would not believe.
Veteran classic EQ players. We were a different breed.
@Magisterdark I agree. The fear of death added a depth to the gameing experience that is lacking in modern MMO's. I remember the PAIN of doing CR in zones like POH (for example) and that feeling of fear while we were pulling in raid zones. Raids were fun - raids could be dangerous, and failure had a price - a high price
I remember the horror of dying and getting my corpse. I would dread death, as one should in a roleplaying game.
One thing though , no matter how -Horrible- corpse runs were, I always felt stronger after completing it. Sort of a "Lesson learned, let's never die again!" feeling. Nice...
@Magisterdark Tell me about it. I would sit and fish on the docks while waiting for a ship to come in; and god knows I wouldn't start a fight on another continent without getting somoene to bind me first. =)
@Magisterdark thing is the less time consuming the game is, the greater the number of people who play it. It's been said before: wow's success (15million+ subscriptions) is because it caters so much to casual people who only play 1hour/day or less. Play eq 1hour/day and it'll be weeks before you're level 10, and even longer before you actually start killing substantial enemies.
@lemmiwinks1110 That's outdated info for the current EQ, it doesn't take much to level in EQ these days, especially with access to mercenaries. Honestly a lot of the old tedium no longer apply in today's EQ.
man everytime im near large bodies of water, large water crafts, or the ocean this song always comes to mind. God I remember my elf friend Ieian showing me this spot in the oot where theres two great stone spires the boat sales through and on them are non social sirens that are hella nice exp, and to get back on the boat you just let it run you over when it comes by. Nobody knew/went there it was awesome for like levels 12-18 *sigh* I miss those days so much
I remember thinking I was so awesome as an ogre sneaking through the invis wall in freeport, through the sewers, and onto the freeport boat. PPL in the dwarf / elf land would be like WOW how did you get over here?!?!
Remember when the cyclops would clip on to the boat and rape you as a newbie so your corpse would be lost in the middle of the sea? I just remember swimming and swimming forever trying to find it. Good times, seriously
It was awesome if you were a necro and could summon corpses. People would be so relieved to have all their hard earned items back that they would tip me hundreds of plat at a time. ARRGH nostalgia overload.
It's too bad that now people want to travel fast in MMORPGs... click here and get instantly teleported there etc... I remember when we had to wait and take the boat to go somewhere in EQ1. It made us feel the world was actually big and that we were actually exploring a world. Today's MMORPGs are lame. They need to look back and take notes. MMORPGs these days are too easy. Instant gratification without any efforts! Oh well, now I can go cry a river listening to that EQ1 music wich I miss alot! :(
@theborg1981 I think you nailed it ... companies would love to offer us that kind of experience again but the masses would cry about it and profits would go down =(
the boat to Overthere.... I loved sailing this boat and listening to this song. Too bad they took it out of EQ along with the underwater swimming song. There is something about EQ that made it seem so real
i made so many trips and was scared the whole time. it felt so real!!! i also did go to veious and stayed clear away from mobs.. it felt like the real deal
i remember at lvl 20 i was on a boat headin for Toxx and what i didnt know was that it was taken over by necros so i did the only thing i could i gated back to Qeynos and stated lvling more so i would be able to run around almost anywhere nowadays so that Mobs or NPCs dont bug me tho
i remember the first time i took a boat it was like i was exploring a new place. very exciting back in the days. for some reason nothing has come close to that feeling but wow was decent pve, daoc was epic pvp but eq was a scary and fun, but very frustrating at times.
I remember jumping to run faster and barely reaching the boat... and other times when the boats became bugged and I just sat there forever wondering what went wrong...
god i remember sitting on the dock playing gems waiting on the boat for 10 minutes, then another 10 minutes on the boat going from Freeport to Butcherblock or vise versa. i also remember sometimes the boats would be buged and a Cyclops that happen to be underwater would start hitting you from under the boat every once in a while in the ocean of tears. ofcourse once Planes of power came out there was no reason to use the boats anymore :-(.
I have a Facebook tribute site for EQ. I lead a guild for 10 + years . Just put Everquest Screenshots into the search
