Especially the very beginning, one would think that this was really an old TOTP performance...
Just take a look at the credits and you will find Godley and Creme :-)
By the way, back in the days there were many music videos with "distorted" sound, just look at Brian May "Starfleet" or Rolling Stones "Undercover Of The Night", everything that you see you would actually HEAR as well, seemed to me like the most common thing in the world back then ;-)
This is a fckn brilliant music video. It is way ahead of its time.
It is a playful comment upon music video making in an era when it was still possible to remember songs could make their way without the aid of videos.
These days its tits, ass, attitude, bling and dick waving.
its a concept video...don't take yourself so seriously...don't try to live your life in one day..never in my life have I ever heard of a "scratch video"
I like this song from Howard Jones. This song was also in the movie "YOUNG AGAIN" which stars Keanu Reeves and Lindsay Wagner. This is the very first movie of Keanu Reeves when he was first introduced to the world of movies in the 80s. This movie "Young Again" is about a young man (Keanu Reeves) who falls in love with an older woman (Lindsay Wagner). A very nice movie!
I can only compare this video to having five seconds of a pleasant dream before someone shouts in your ear. You can't enjoy the song when it's packed with constant jarring interruptions. I'm all for alternate versions, but a different take does not a "New Song" make.
There is one live recording of this song that I recently heard on the radio. The audience is pretty quiet at first but later he encourages them to sing the refrain a couple of times and the whole thing just gets unbelievably addictive. If anyone knows on which album this or where I could get this version is (no links to free downloads! I don't want to steal) would you be so kind and answer me, please.
There is a non-distorted version of this song posted by an Asian person. It is worth looking for. It has Asian characters in the title but it is the english song without the distortions.
Love this song, but I think this video might have actually hampered it: I cannot believe MTV would air this very much during the channel's heyday in 1985, as people would think that it would reflect on the channel's quality, and change channels.
Therefore it was only a top 15 hit and not a bigger hit. Which is a shame, cuz it's Howard's best song ever.
@leonbrain68 Tony Blackburn (the presenter) is a British DJ (he used to work on pirate radio). It would appear that this was made for a British TV station - Probably BBC1.
@leonbrain68 Tony Blackburn (the presenter) is a British DJ (he used to work on pirate radio). It would appear that this was made for a British TV station - Probably BBC1. I have to say, though, it's original.
The audio edit on the original version is even weirder than this one. This was a little reworked for the release of the video compilation from where it was taken.
I remember being at the house of my then girlfriend. They had a satellite dish, which was completely foreign to me, as I had never seen one before. This video comes on, and she had to explain that there was nothing wrong with the dish, and the video was supposed to look like this, which I just could not fathom. Yeah, I wasn't too bright.
In fact it is, I remember seeing this back when it first came out and I remember the rats and other odd stuff.
It is kind of weird but yeah this is actually what the video looked like. Remember, it was another product of the 80's where everything was just weird...
Yeah I agree. The 80's we're great and no one was affraid to be different but the video was still ahead of it's time back then. This video is almost like something Weezer would do
I remember when it cam out. IT was funny. I understand how nowadays it may seem annoying. you have to admit that with all the cliche videos this is different :)
I love Howard Jones song, but I must say that this is one of his worst - thanks for posting it anyway - At least we viewed not only the good ones, but the bad ones as well.
I guess he was trying to be innovative, but I have to agree, but cutting into and interupting the song is not only annoying, but was kinda like commiting artistic suicide especially back in the day when videos made or broke the success of singles.
I beg to differ. It's hilarious. It's creative. And for those who want to hear the song uninterrupted, I have it on good authority that the song is available on CD for your listening pleasure.
You can think Godley & Creme for this brilliant piece. It was THEIR idea, not HJ's, to do the video in this choppy manner!

I love these old British music videos; the concepts were more interesting and clever without the benefit of huge special effects.

This video was directed by Godley and Creme and it's one of the only attempts at "scratching" video like a turntable. The called it scratch video.
