@seldomsceen Find the best weed your neighborhood has to offer, roll a blunt, smoke, listen to this track high as fuck, and I will guarantee this will be one of the best things you've heard in your life.
@SammyyLemon . You ain't even gotta smoke for that. This shit is good like bacon and orange juice. Even a square-ass dude can get this. . .probly. Probly not.
yea can someone explain why critics think of guys like timbaland and the neptunes as musical geniuses but they don't even give guys like madlib and el-p a tip of the hat
other than that they're idiots since that's obvious
@shonuxs They're talented but genius is used far too often these days. They don't even really know how to read music and even though their beats and basslines are very, very good, and with Timba, groundbreaking, I would never put them in the category of Dilla or even Madlib really, and I have VA roots, love those cats. They have enough natural talent to develop but they haven't. Neptunes esp. have become very formulaic and predictable. They've never done anything close to this.
@cavaleer Couldn't have said it better. That's one helluva tightly packed argument right there, even if it's all very obvious to the advanced listener. I can see how one can think of Timbaland as a musical genius if he likes his music -very- much, but having heard countless other music, I for one still hold Madlib very highly on the list, while Timbaland kinda went down in the mainstream mud. That's just me, of course, and no hard feelings to Timbafans intended, I still like his beats :)
@noiz87 Thanks and I'm with you on Timbo. Cats get lost in the glitter and forget that quest for the "perfect beat" that got them the glitter in the first place. Madlib, Dilla, Flying Lotus have never abandoned the quest. You have to respect that as much as the quality of there music. No here's the question I've been pondering- for Dilla, Madlib and Flying Lotus, is in unfortunate that they can't/don't read music or is it a sign of their overal gift? Imagine Dilla's music if he knew composition
@doncaldeep You can tell they didn't/don't read music because there are no chords and chord progressions, no bridges, no growth in the music. The question is not whether it's good or great- it's both. The question is how much better would they be if they could write and compose their own music entirely? Both of them literally made sampling and looping into an art-form. I don't dispute this at all. I just wonder if their creativity would be even greater if they could read. The perfect analogy
@doncaldeep The perfect analogy is a rapper trying to write a book or a short-story even. Sure they can put together a couple of clever rhyming sentences but could they maintain that focus and creativity for a single subject over several pages let alone literary artistry to the words? Most rappers would struggle to write a page. Jaylib, however, would create some brilliant music if they read. Think of all those James Brown and George Clinton songs. They ALL played the piano and read music.
@doncaldeep Again, you're missing the point. They have a great natural ear. They hear our music, draw from the classics and have reformulated it. Dilla, in particular, crafted an incredible sound ON INSTINCT AND FEEL ALONE. But their is no question that they do not know how to read and compose music. They probably hopped right in and started making beats and basslines at 15. So they never learned how to read. But you can immediately tell if someone reads music b/c of the music itself
@doncaldeep That's a mouthful right there, haha but you never know. Hendrix revolutionized MUSIC. If Dilla or Mad studied composition and arrangement on the piano, would they have done something similar?? It's a great question for discussion.
@doncaldeep No bro', Hendrix knew music, notes and composition inside out. He didn't read like a trained violinist or pianist. Most Jazz musicians didn't "read" like that. But they knew composition, the structure of music inside and out. The problem is that in the last 20 years cats can make music without being able to play an instrument. This means they often skip that critical immersion into the structure and theory and order of music. Nice try....;-)
@cavaleer ok i get it but then how can you say madlib doesnt know composition? even IF he didn't..... he's a better/more original/more talented/more productive etc. musician than you, me, or most people will ever be. I know as far as the LAST ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC SPACE JAZZ & PERCUSSION goes, he plays every instrument. He raps. He has like 20 aliases. And has made a few modern "classics". I don't care if he can't read music or play piano in the "traditional" style. He makes good music and lots of it
@doncaldeep His songs don't "grow". That's how you can tell. I don't know if you play music but I'm learning the piano and will study composition. I'm already a literary artist- my first book is about a piano genius- and I always expect brilliance from myself. However, yes, he's very talented for anyone but especially for someone who doesn't know music technically, for someone who plays by EAR. Madlib, like Dilla, knows how to create that FEEL with SOUND. Dilla was incredibly gifted this way.
@AlanColeslaw THAT would explain a lot but it would also raise questions. If he studied it for a decent length of time he would've learned to read, learned composition to some degree, and to my mind it would've made his hip-hop work more evolved. Regardless, his natural ear was genius.
@dermannmitdernase i'm not a 100% sure but i think most of it is played, after watching clips of madlib playing either base or drums it kind of makes sense. but it isn't really the quality of the actual playing that makes this so great if u know what i mean
