They're not retarded, they just have a different way or living. Not everyone in this world is the same. This movie sorta reminds me of Gummo, but less odd.
Pauls mum normal? she comes across to me like she wants to fuck her own son. the comments she makes in the film are far from normal in my opinion!
Also if you grew up or live in a small working class industrial town in most places in the world people can comes across retarded, it's just their way. man i live in a small yorkshire town and most of the people i interact with or see i'd describe as retarded. Anyway GREAT film!!!
This was one of the worst movies ive have ever seen. Its just about dumb small town people and no real story. The acting is horrendous. Please people do not waste you time on this movie.
And oh my god, I just realized I spelled "scene" wrong, which wouldn't be ironically weird if I hadn't just ask if the characters in a movie were mentally handicapped. But anyway, moving on.
"I love you!" "Why would you say that, what's wrong with you!" LOL Okay, seriously, no offense, but I kinda felt like I was watching the break up seen from "The Other Sister" (great movie by the way.) So I'm just gonna ask, is this a "The Other Sister" type deal, you know are they....special? But yeah, other than that clarification this movie looks dramatic and good and I recognize a lot of actors, so I might check it out.
@JapRoc14 Nope, they're not "special". Once you watch it in context, it'll make a lot more sense or it might not. But for me, it made perfect sense. It's the kind of thing you can see a lot in real life.
Although beautifully shot, I have no clue about many aspects of this film.
The scene where Noel is at a party and a drunk guy is staring through the window at her. She seems more interested in him than the phone call she's having with Paul. It seemed like she was going to cheat on him.
And why does Paul end up in a bar drinking? What happened before that? What did Noel do wrong?
Also, are all the characters a bit retarded? Paul's mum seems like the only normal person in the whole film.
@VYD239 1. Well, that's pretty much what happened, no? Although she does love Paul, I think that she was very young (She wasn't even in college yet!), and was rather sheltered from all her years in Boarding School, so then Paul, the casanova in town begins to pay attention to her and then all these guys are as well, she thinks she should just enjoy it, but she doesn't.
Did you even see the movie? It's obvious Paul wanted to get hammered after discovering the truth about Noel.
They're all young and a bit dumb. Honestly, maybe I hang out or see too many stupid people, but the behavior and dialogue of all of them is very real to me. Of coure, Paul's mom is going to seem the most normal as she is the most mature.
It seems that most think of "George Washington" when DGC gets brought up. But, I feel that this film is his best thus far and is the most representative of his vision. It's poetic, engrossing and altogether awesome.
the greatest film ever made in my opinion(told i'm crazy). brakes me everytime i watch it. there's just something about it! Must of watched it over 50 times easy and know most of the lines. i cant get enough! "...i love you" "why would you say that, why?"
i first saw this late on a saturday night and i stumbled upon ten minutes in. went to bed two hours later watery eyed and smiling. its so underrated, a really special film.
@ai5H4 yeah give it a try, i loved it, the cinematography is beautiful and the soundtrack works really well, story is a little cliche and the male lead isnt that great but overall its a fantastic film. sweet little indie romance.
i feel like the acting was horriable and its too bad because the storyline was good. I dont mind Indie films but when the people look and act as if they never had a single acting class than it sucks.
well its not hollywood acting, thats for sure. david gordon green seems to strive for naturalistic performances in his movies which may come off as bad acting, but to me, it gives the characters a sense of authenticity. like, i could know any of these characters inreal life, not just on the screen.
one of my favorite movies. Its such an honest depiction of how love doesn't always work out how you want it to. Everything from the flawed characters to the seemingly non-sensical dialogue resembles real life in a way most scripted romances can't. Parts can be so unexpected that it has to remind you of those times in life when things just ended up in ways you couldn't possibly have imagined. It is the honest imperfections of the story and characters that make this film so unique and powerful.
I loved this movie. It was deep, realistic and simple but at the same time it was powerful and touching. The way the actors portrayed their characters was brilliant and the emotion that was shown was like you don't normally see.
It's true but at one single point it starts to get interesting. If any lead acress other than zooey was there probably would have done the same. I am glad I stayed though.
I didn't want to hate this movie. It had promise, and I thought it would be great. Unfortunatly, in the end, the movie turned to crap. The only good thing about this movie (besides the first half, which was great) was the acting by the main characters.
If this movie had ended with the 'smoking in the bedroom' scene it could have been one of the very best films of recent times. However, it didn't, it plummeted into trite sentimentality. I have never seen such potentially great film be destroyed by such cop-out cowardice. I have not been able to see one of SG Green's movies since as he let me (and himself and a good cast) down so badly.
what sucks is that the end has zooey's char saying she loves that guy dut he just gives up! that what you mean by cowardice? i wist those 2 could stick together but i guess he sucks at keeping a girl hmm?
relationships don't always have happy endings and I think that's what Green was trying to portray... things don't always work out, people do stupid things, and say stupid things and they don't always come together happily at the end. Do I wish that the ending was differently, probably but I feel like this ending is more true to real life.
Did you read my comment? The last thing I was suggesting was a convenient, pat ending. I just think Green flailed around for the last half an hour or so and lapsed into sentimentality. I hate sentimentality.
no yeah I understood what you were saying... but I guess the ending was probably an attempt to appeal to a broader audience which is sad because the rest of the movie was amazing.
I think the so-called "sentimentality" at the end is what made me love the movie. The smoking scene is so bitter and hard to watch that it represents the two characters at their absolute worst. If it had ended there, it would have been a bleak and immature portrait of two characters who aren't that two-dimensional. It is a love story, not a story about hard feelings. I thought the ending was perfect cause it captures the two of them coming to peace with the reality of their relationship.
Sometimes life is 'bleak' and god knows people are 'immature'... The final section wasn't 'real' - it was a contrivance to appeal to a broader audience. It could have been Rohmer-esque but merely turned to slush. No truth was revealed, just more cliches. As I said, an opportunity missed.
