He talks about how the blue screened her in to make it blend perfectly....except that at 01:35 as she reaches for the nob on the cabinet it shows the evidence of two shots. Orange shirt on her foreground wrist and a black one (or no shirt showing to cover the wrist in the reach) in the mirror image. Almost though!
@Xezium Well, duh, all of them. There are many films these days that have CGI on every single frame. Also, lots of directors are learning to love the idea of shooting every scene with just the actors against a green screen, and adding every single set element later via CGI. Sin City was made like this, but it gave the whole film a specific, cartoonish feel. It's more impressive when they use this technique but it looks completely natural.
@kanojo1969 Of course, but I'm just pointing out that it's often something that people don't think about. As in, they don't usually think about the silhouettes of the trees in the way distant background having taken some people hours to manually put in each frame.
@Xezium No, people never notice how much work goes into sets, but that was true of wooden sets just as much as CGI. Studios spend millions of dollars and employ hundreds of people building huge elaborate sets that only get used once and are then destroyed. Filmgoers almost never really understand how much work is involved.
I think CGI is actually a lot cheaper and less effort than the old way. That's why it is used even for films that don't 'look' like cgi. Making films has changed forever.
@Xezium Happens more often than you think. He mentioned "painting" out a cameraman, oftentimes effects shots can be as simple as removing an unwanted visual in the frame, like a logo or unwanted buildings
@Rikashk Basically, the girl running was one shot, and then they separately filmed a medicine cabinet (probably with a solid blue panel instead of a mirror) being opened and reached into. They composited the "running" shot into the medicine cabinet shot.
Because Religion clearly has to have some kind of relation to Visual Effects. Seriously, you guys could take a fucking jar of Peanut Butter and have it relate directly to the birth of Jesus Christ.
@xXSythenXx What i think is pathetic is that you dont realize how our dear god affects every aspect of our lives. You truly are lost soul. I will pray for you.
@AnalNapalm You've got to be kidding me. What happened to all of "God's Children" being Forgiven of all their sins?
Leviticus 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:
I have a hard time believing that if you are indeed Christian, and you do believe you are one of many who believe in God. That you would criticize another persons beliefs or try to hurt by saying 'they are a lost soul'.
@AnalNapalm I myself do not believe in a God, but I do believe that people have the rights to believe in what they so wish. The reason I brought up my first comment, was that - Yes, God may be real to you. He may have created everything and given us the intelligence to create magnificent work like that. But who are you to immediately try to give credit to 'God' before giving credit to the Human Being who created it?
@b0rk3d The new testament is very clear that Jesus firmly agreed with the old testament punishments. For example, if children are disobedient, their parents should smash their brains in with rocks. He said exactly this, and many more revolting things, lots of times.
In the year 2012, anyone who thinks we should still live our lives according to rules invented by primitive cavemen is an utter fucking moron. Judaism, Islam, Christianity: All are just as primitive and violent. Wake up, idiot.
@kanojo1969 Although I agree religions are kinda silly. It definitely wasn't invented by "primative cavemen" Civilization was in full swing by the time the bible was written. Perhaps you should "Wake up idiot"
@DevoxNZ Well, I wasn't intending to be historically precise, but if you want to be pedantic, then you are right. But focusing on that error instead of my actual point is itself a mistake. I could, for example, reply to your message just to point out that you spelled 'primitive' wrong, but that would only distract you from my real point. Which is that trusting in 2,000 year old beliefs when we have overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary is both stupid and dangerous.
Why weren't these guys working on the Star Wars prequels. Despite all the blue-screening and CGI that went into this movie it actually looks real. The prequels are just obvious.
Awesome stuff! Great to hear how they did it. A very kewl film. And I don't think I ever noticed how neat this shot was. I was too amazed by things like the Big Pull Back at the beginning of the film, or the Destruction of the Device.
I am bummed though. Zemeckis was a GENIUS! So many good ones. Back to the Future, Roger Rabbit, Contact here. But lately he's been putzing about with those CGI sim films - Mars Needs Women, Christmas Carol. Not good.

I THINK this is how it goes, in simple terms of the shots they used
Shot 1 - Ordinary film of the girl running towards the camera and grabbing something with her LEFT hand (this shot gets pasted onto the green-screen)
Shot 2 - Girl's RIGHT hand in front of the camera, opening the cupboard which has a green-screen instead of a mirror
If you watch from 1:34 a few times, you can see that the mirrored hand wavers slightly, the other one doesn't.
Anyway, hope that made a bit of sense.
