  • Why does Christianity need a disclaimer? I am not in fear of being labeled a Christian- if you throw me in the deep end I can swim through the controversies and make it out with my intellect, experience, and worldview. Why are musicians so handcuffed by faith? Marketing bands is pathetic, and I really don't care anymore because I haven't bought a CD in years so I don't need to thumb through the "Christian" section at all. Let's learn what truth is and what it isn't- God doesn't need a "reason"

  • my history teacher played this while we worked in class. This music will forever remain in me.

  • @KikeJHN Well you must have the best history teacher ever. You best be getting A+'s in that class!

  • im going to see them live in... march i think. im SOOOOOOOO EXCITED! i luv u mutemath!

  • @californiagurl5509 I saw them in January! TOTALLY WORTH IT! They're AMAZING live

  • This is truly a prayerful song. "Surrender has somehow become so beautiful." As a Catholic, this song basically sums it all up. Not to mention it kicks ass. Rock on, MuteMath.

  • This is killin me. A few years ago when I had first discovered the greatness that is Top Gear, a fan had posted a music video using this song as a tribute. The song & video were perfect! If you had never seen top gear, or heard of mute math you'd think it was MM's official music vid. Yes, it was that well done. If anyone knows where I can find it do tell... It was taken down and I haven't found it since. Still a great song though.. with or without vid. :)

  • @DarkMikaruX i got their Armistice Live cd and it came with the dvd and it has the official and the reason why they took it down

  • @roundabout10people Well don't delay man! Tell..do tell.. this video has eluded me for long enough. Need more info... do you have it? Hand it over and no one gets hurt! lol

  • wow, i haven't heard this song in 5 years!! What a great song :)

  • I honestly happened upon there set at Lolla '06. Best thing I've ever stumbled on in my life.

  • wow this song really tugs at strings long forgotten

  • Amazing song. Best rock band of this era.

  • one of them is my cousin you really think you are the biggest fan

  • This song was my summer of '05. And it's still my favorite MuteMath song, if not my favorite song period.

  • i wish they still made music that sounds like this EP. by far my favorites songs from them were from this time

  • @lhs04 same way with all bands for me too but all bands are gonna change their style a little bit, but it's proven to be true that we all come back to our roots so i wouldn't be surprised if they started songs like this again

  • Go to one of their shows, it will clear everything right up. Just listen and enjoy the music people. It's damn sure better than other mainstream shit. (Gaga, Bieber, etc.)

  • @Ambiuosity28 but then how about those who love both Mutemath and Gaga?

music is music bro, they do it 'cause they love it, why does it matter if it's mainstream?

slash also did you know that mutemath contributed to the twilight track? oh wait, that's mainstream AND they're terrible movies slash books, but ya know, bro's gotta make the monies somehow right?

  • Beautiful*

  • such a BYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-Teeful surrender.

  • love this band gr 9 til now hahaha shit

  • I love this song so much!! It doesn't matter how you interpret it - the song will retain it's beauty. so people, please stop arguing...just kick back and enjoy the music. personally, i imagine myself flying...because I really wish I could fly.

why oh why can't i have the wings of a bird????

  • just saw these guys awesome fucking show.

  • @thehockeybomb do you realize this is a christian based group?

  • @musicman9881 Does it really matter? I'm not the least bit religious but this music is still awesome.

  • @musicman9881 ok, religion does not have to be thrown into everything.

  • sounds like a mixture betwn foo n cold play Dx

  • They may separate their belief from a total influence of their music, but they said themselves that their belief influenced at least some of their music. They didnt want to be under a christian label because they said that they didnt write all of their music for the purpose of Christianity; however, songs like this are unavoidably christian. Other examples: peculiar people and ok.

  • @zczcbl Agreed...and they did win a Dove Award, which would be the Christian equivalent of a Grammy ♥♥

  • @zczcbl hahaha when you have a true relationship with Christ you cannot help everything you do being peppered with praise to Him! :)

  • I like mutemath, but this sounds like bad foo fighters. well, that's redundant.

  • The only thing that could make this song any cooler is more cowbell

  • Love this song! I thought it was Switchfoot the first time I heard it. Such a talented vocalist.

  • jesus saved us all and you repay him with hatred you sir should be ashamed of yourself

  • @Biggestmutemathfan

This is obviously a Christ centered song bro, sorry

  • @revan963963 Amen! Yea @biggestmutemathfan, who is taking control of the atmosphere then?

  • Much more than just a beautiful surrender :)

  • control it seems, i lose my mind everytime i hear this song, ironic ain't it

  • God Bless

  • Just beautiful song x3

Mutemath is awesome band :D <3

  • Oh for cry out loud people, get a room. This is no place to argue, this is where we listen to this beautiful. So buzz off.

  • @Biggestmutemathfan and warpigs777: Here's how I see/understand it: This album and the next (forgot what it was called,) are when they where considered a christian band. Then in Armistice, they were not. I'm sure if you asked them if they are christians, they won't deny it, though.

  • @warpigs777 dumbass

  • @FeedtheMachine100 isn't it so stupid? some people get so defensive over the stupidest shit I swear

  • ok just going to say, this is a christian song, however they are not a christian band. Paul meany wrote this song while flying on a plane, in fear he wrote this song while on the plane. But as I stated they are not a christian band. it kind of like Anberlin, they write about what they want, and if they feel like writing a few songs about God, then they will.

  • @MajrMovieMadnes why do people put so much weight on how a band classifies themselves? What difference is there in writing Christian themed music, or classifying themselves as a Christian band? It's like people have this stigma against "Christian Bands".

  • @shannonthegreek Agreed! I am not Christian, and one of my favorite bands is a Christian band, but their songs aren't religious. I didn't find out until after I started listening to them.

  • @ShastaJade11 Same here!

  • disliked it. Just because there were none.

  • No dislikes! :D

  • They are Christians who make music not labeled as "Christian". Regardless of their faith, it's excellent music.

  • @dpeairson i so agree

  • take control.<3

  • Comment removed

  • @warpigs777 hey, they never said they werent christian. they just said MuteMath seperates religion from their music, and i agree whole heartedly. i can see how this song could be heard as a song about God, but its also an extreamly romantic song aswell.

  • 0 dislikes.....not THATS what i like to see.

  • @BiggestmutemathfanSo you said that you aren't a christian due to people like the warpigs guy. Granted I can totally understand but being a christian doesn't mean that people achieve perfection, tht guy obviously has some issues(no offense to him) If Christianity was just about the people around you then you just didn't get it, Christianity isn't about the people but about God. God created us but we aren't the some people are messed up, God should be who you truelly look at. His people fail alot

  • Niche.

  • @crossandcrown: I don't find your attitude any better than Mr./Ms. "warpigs777". Christianity is not a cult, and you must be in some kind of crazy place to have met so many jerk Christians. I'm a Christian, and I've met some nasty ones, but mostly they're amazing. Most of us really try. As for the Westboro Baptist Church, they're super-fringe. You don't have to believe in God, but please don't insult me because I choose to. This is in defense of my beliefs and not an attack on yours.

  • @cutebutpsycho101 LOL there is nothing crazy about canada, clearly you are putting your own contexts on what im saying because i tried to get my point across in a manner that people wouldnt be offended.

But i cant blame you because text conveys little emotion

I believe in god, just not in the same context you do. I don't agree with the moral taught in the catholic school/entire religious system. Its become very shady(for lack of a better word) imo.

don't worry im not here to troll my friend :P

  • @crossandcrown: I just meant that in most places, there is at least an equal mix of jerk Christians and nice Christians, if not more nice ones. I didn't mean Canada as a whole, especially since I didn't know you lived in Canada. I was just surprised that you had met so many unkind Christians. I was in Canada (Creston, BC) last year and I thought it was very nice. And I meant that warpigs was close to trolling, not you.

  • @cutebutpsycho101 I'm just disgusted by the history behind the catholic platform. the interpretations of god but put forth in the churches/schools(around here atleast) is very "Santa Clause" like, when really its just trying to teach there that there is good("god")and bad(the "devil") in EVERYONE! anyways, im not going to get into the whole thing:P but im sorry you took what i said the wrong way, i can see how you'd take it like that but knwo that no offence was intended!

  • @crossandcrown--I appreciate your words. I'm not Catholic, and I disagree with them as well. It is true that a lot of people like their religion delivered in a Cliffs Notes kind of way instead of really studying and thinking and coming to their own conclusions. Anyway, consider me to be un-offended.

  • actually its a great way to address the problem . just because it doesnt work foryou doesnt mean i have to change

  • 0 dislikes !!

  • My nickname - lol :)

  • This song, Peculiar People, and Noticed are one of MuteMath's most powerful songs. And even though they don't directly sing about God in their songs, those three are undoubtedly Christian. Pay attention to the lyrics.

    God and MuteMath ftw

  • you don't need to believe in god to get a good message from this song. i bank on that fact.

  • it means be at peace with yourself but your also suppose to rely of god for all your troubles.

  • I think what you all need to learn here is everyone is supposed to interpret a song for themself. Some might think this is about God, a girl, whatever. Love it either way, because MUTEMATH is awesome!

  • I dont care what the band or you say, this is a christian song. Why they would pretend its not is beyond me. :\

  • I believe this song is definitely about God. It's beautiful and I love it so <3

  • lolol airplanes

  • meh used to be a Christian still believe in Jesus I just love Mutemath

  • I'm pretty sure this song is about Paul (the singer) conquering his fear of flying in airplanes...put that in your bin and recycle it!

  • I love this song!!! Just heard it on the radio for the first time. Thankyou Lord!

  • 273 people gave up control and surrendered to this song. Yes.

  • Beautiful song. Love it

  • Awesome song!!!

  • music should be open to interpretation, so if people think it's a Christian song or a love song, let them think so. Don't force what you think on other people. especially since we're on the youtube and no matter what you say and how long you argue, no one is going to change their minds, so let's close our eyes, appreciate these beautiful lyrics, and live and let live :)

  • O.o i never even had the idea that this song might be a christian song, i just thought the song was a song about a girlfriend or something, i don't see the how this could be christian

  • @slayerjamz007 To a Christian it may be interpreted as giving up control of yourself because we tend to do things on our own power and often fail miserably. By giving up our desire to do everything within our own means, we can let God take control, surrender, and therefore let him restore life to what it's supposed to look like. Now, I'm just telling you what I believe is the truth; I'm not forcing anything down your throat. Just wanted to let you know, man.

  • @meechoman90 No, it's all good, i was confused, but i see your point, thank you for the clarification

  • @HOLYtDESTOYER would you please stop Mutemath isnt a "Christian band" like MajrMovieMadnes said so dont go hating and commenting on everyones comment it can get really annoying if you dont want to listen to their songs then dont

  • He must be talking about Obama's sky or his girelfriend captivating sky. Hey about last comment , vampire's need dealt with sorry the cross offends you or snorks your tooky. CROSS, CRUCIFIX, HOLY WATER,!!! the demons say it my mom says it every flippin liberal on the planet says it...what you basiclly said "Jesus have you come to torment us before our time!

  • If people want to know, some of the members of this band are christian. If you search Paul Meany on youtube, the first video your going to get is a worship song sung by him. However, Mutemath is not a "Christian Band" just like Switchfoot, Skillet, 12 Stones, The Fray, Owl City, and more. but each of these bands throws in a song about God every once in a while.

  • The spotlight is on! Better to be quiet and be considered a fool than to speak and relieve all doubt. What would Moses do...should be the question. If he they dont do what Moses did. The question then will be what WILL Jesus do. He says you deny me before men I will deny you before the father. (really Im not being a party pooper) Ilove MUTEMATH!

  • It's obviously about God. Ugh.

  • everyone of there freaking songs is AWESOME I LOVE THEM!

  • Who gives a shit if theyre christian

  • @bavarianwerks I AGREEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! (but they r)

  • @scrakeBait WOW.....had no idea saying that they were a Christian rock band made me a troll. Being a bit over sensitive are we? Not once did I say there was anything wrong with being a Christian rock band....just most people don't know that they are. Anyone offended by that comment needs to grow up and not flip out over a post on a video.

  • Of the 67,819 times this video has been watched, I'm pretty sure I have about 54,000 of them XD

  • reminiscent of certain third eye blind songs

  • Muy buena esta canción.

  • the uploader has got a really good music taste, great song!

  • You might be the Biggest Mutemath Fan, but I am the Greatestmutemathfan!!!

  • @Greatestmutemathfan hah, touché!

  • Is this there latest album?

  • If they were satanist cannibals, I'd still listen.

  • they may not be a christian band, but that doesnt mean they arnt christians. I wonder if what they r refering to in songs such as this if not the lord. goerge harrison?

  • such a beautiful surrender.....

  • I actually prefer this version to the rerecorded one on the self titled album.

  • I remember watching them in Glasgow (Scotland, UK) and this song stood out for me. Was i an intimate venue aswell. Brilliant.

  • Then again your just one individual with one opinion that might change someone's mind or not. Anyone has the right to believe in what they wan to.So to those who believe in God, so be it.To thos who believe God is as real as Santa Claus let them be. My point is, stop talking crap about other people.

  • mutemath. rocks.

who cares what religion they are, they have amazinnng music, leave it at that and enjoy

  • Also, I saw MuteMath live back in April of '06 (surprising how empty the hall was). Paul said he wrote "Control" while on a flight. He lost his cool and penned this song while praying for a safe landing. He now uses Valium when he has to go on long flights. :) Also, many bands with Christians in them will not want to be labeled as "Christian" because of the obvious presumptions made about Christian bands and the narrow genre into which they fit.

  • For any of you who may doubt the band's origins, take a look at EarthSuit. This band surfaced 11 years ago with Paul Meany and Roy Mitchell Cardenas as two of its members. In the "thanks" section in the liner notes, Paul states, "Thank you, God" and Roy states, "Thanks God for your everlasting love and mercy." This band was Christian, and stated so plainly. Whether or not they (P&R) still believe in it is between them and God. God gives us a choice: take Him or leave Him.

  • This song is about a girl. Everyone saying this song is Christian is probably some blind moron centering their life around those "God" fairy tales that are so popular these days.

  • @RubedoX89 Foolish braggart of vanity. You live on a probability, thinking "God probably doesn't exist" not being able to prove he doesn't exist and not sure of anything, yet you're so sure that any 'God" is a fairy tale and any believer of a "God" a moron. "Probably" is a big word. Good luck living your life with "probably," all to never existing again if you WERE right. And no, this song is left unaddressed directly for anyone to take it as they will, but Paul truly meant this to "God."

  • Been loving this song for years now, it just stays amazing!

  • Does it really matter if they are a "Christian" rock band or not?! These guys freaking rock...enough said!

  • I couldn't care less what kind of religious beliefs these guys may or may not practice; this song is beautiful! It sounds like a summer sunrise.... :-)

  • I ♥ this song. I first heard this on the Effect =]

  • I realize that this song was quite possibly written with God/Jesus in mind, but I also weep for anyone who has never known another human being who has made them feel like this.

Furthermore, anyone who feels the need to identify a band as a "Christian band", PARTICULARLY when the band themselves has explicitly said they do not identify themselves as such, is both mildly irritating and is missing the point.

  • heeyyyy nice background picture :D it looks like an expanded version of the Reset EP album art, where'd you get it?

  • I love this song, what other songs are good by them?

  • @PigsOnATrain ALL OF THEM!

  • @PigsOnATrain

    all of them

  • @PigsOnATrain Every song.

Listen to there Reset EP album. It's the best I think.

  • Comment removed

  • this song really helped me through tough life situations.. thx mutemath<3

  • This is the first time I listen to Mute Math, and I seriously already love them!!!

  • i couldnt really care less if theyre christian or devil worshipers this song is FUCKING mint :D can you tell me where to download this song coz its impossible to find it D: :'(

  • MuteMath is NOT a christian band. Yes it does sound alot like they are.

However Paul Meany (Mutemath Leadman) was in the band earthsuit which was a christian band.

I observe talent of all genres from rap to classical, and mutemath is by far one of my favorite bands.

  • This song rocks!!!!!

  • i love this song sooooo much its like i get goose bumps when he says "such a beutiful surrender" deep and very cool sounding.

  • this song does sound like they are singing to God somewhat. this is an awesome band. i love them either way.

  • yes I know there christain band I do believe in god

  • this is an awesome song!

  • Your religion or personal philosophy should not have anything to do with your musical ability this IS good music.

  • @arcka:

That's a paradoxical statement. Religion, philosophy, and music are all things that should come from the very essence of who the person is, otherwise, it's no good-- it's empty. No matter who you are, your religion and philosophy will come out in the music you make. It will come out in everything you do.

  • @arcka that's the band's stance on things, from what i know. they don't want to cater to any particular audience or demographic, they just want to make the best music they possibly can. that's why they rejected the tags of being a Christian band.

  • @arcka well they do with this band.....opinion.

  • is this from the reset RP cuz its different than the self-titled version

  • One of the best bands out there, goddamn I want them to come to Italy to see them live.

  • There are pretty much no words for how much I love this song.

  • I watch this guys playing this song in live at ROCK AL PARQUE and it was great.

They are great....! i love them so much, all of their songs are a rush of blood to the head.

They blow it (your head) in just a second and even more when they are on stage

  • are any of you aware mutemath is a christian rock band?

  • @shannonthegreek Are you aware that they aren't and have sated this many times in videos interviews and even on their own website.

  • @Biggestmutemathfan I was always led to believe that they were classified as "experimental christian rock" and so does wikipedia....not that it matters, I like them either way...I was just commenting

  • @Biggestmutemathfan you must be deaf

  • @switchheelfront360 Go to their website forum and find a few videos on them talking about it, and we will see who the "deaf" one is.

  • @Biggestmutemathfan well even if they werent christian what would be so bad about them being christian?

  • @Biggestmutemathfan They may not be known as/come off as a christian band and they may simply just be christians in a band but you cannot deny that this song amongst many others(especially 'it's ok') are about God

  • @Biggestmutemathfan are they christions in a band? i know people dont like to be classified as a christion band and i respect that b/c people will try to limit them i just discovered the band btw they mave mad talent

  • @Biggestmutemathfan And yet they were included as a bonus track on disc 2 of "Wow Hits 2005"

  • @Biggestmutemathfan

"For us, we just try to keep it simple. We're obviously a band; that's really all we ever wanted to be from the very beginning without catering to any particular genre or political or religious agenda. We just want to make music with no barriers" - Paul Meany -

  • @Biggestmutemathfan They are ARE a christian band. They just keep it a secret.... they are extremely close to people in my church. they have been there a couple of times. sadly they are just one more band... that knows if they keep talking about god they wont get much farther. so they prefer to keep it on the d-low. but the songs are plainly about god. read a bible man.

  • @30stmred21 "We're obviously a band; that's really all we ever wanted to be from the very beginning without catering to any particular genre or political or religious agenda. We just want to make music with no barriers." -Paul Meany, mutemath's lead singer

  • @Biggestmutemathfan @Biggestmutemathfan "I used to be in a very overt Christian band, and I think once we started Mute Math, and there were spiritual undertones in the music--and we'll openly state, yeah, we're Christian--we watched how the Christian division of Warner Bros. just ran with it. And they ran with it faster than Warner Bros. ran with it in the general market," explained Meany.

  • @Biggestmutemathfan The first band which was Earthsuit was. They have a video on youtube its cool watch it. Its called earthsuit schizophreniac and ...... the song One time they are awesome....but that statement is like saying Davinci wasnt a Christian

  • @HOLYtDESTROYER "and have sated this many times in videos interviews and even on their own website." Need i say more?

  • @Biggestmutemathfan why not say more, you keep saying need I say more. Or are you in bondage that your master might whip you.

  • @HOLYtDESTROYER Just puzzles me that most songs on last album before Armistice was singing about God. They are not shallow enough to sing about girls. The album Controll is totally about Jesus. I friggin bought my first album in Christian store. They say that because they dont want to lose their popularity.

  • Comment removed

  • @HOLYtDESTROYER Will you people ever stop preaching about religious stuff on YouTube. Surely you must be capable of understanding that some people believe in "God" or some other superior being and others do not. Nothing you say is going to convince anyone otherwise so just keep that to the side and let people comment on the music.

  • @shannonthegreek If anything, they're just christians in a band. :D

  • @indorocker88 As are majority of bands actually.

  • @Biggestmutemathfan

@ all of you: who really cares? the music is great

  • @Biggestmutemathfan Then the majority is...Brainwashed and sheep's like the rest of the people:) Believing in god is like believing in Santa:)

  • They are all "Practicing Christians," but they want to remain known as a band and not a ministry. Their old band, Earthsuit, was a christian band though.

  • @indorocker88 Yeah the first time I saw them wow it must be 4 yrs ago was at this Christian festival sort of thing and they were like god bless and such. i'm pretty sure most of them r christian but theyve stated they don't want ne religous affiliations shannonthegreek

  • @shannonthegreek and so what if they are?

they're christians, they make unbelievable music that barely any other human could dream of making! show some respect at least.

  • @shannonthegreek I just found that out today I was really surprised but im glad they are!! :D
