  • Great video to watch! My grandparents' house was about 2 miles from Santa Anita and granddad used to take my mom and aunt over to Santa Anita to watch "The Biscuit" run. I heard many stories of Seabiscuit as a kid.

  • I've been handicapping for 40 years. SB was a great horse, but Sec would have demolished him. Sec's times at 1 3/16, at 1 1/4 and at 1/ 1/2 were at least 10 lengths faster than SB. SB beat a phenominal horse in WA, but that was mainly because SB trained for and got the early lead that WA needed. That wouldn't have worked with Sec, who won from anywhere. But so what? SB wasn't famous because of being historically fast but because of his gutsiness and compelling story. That's enough for me.

  • Biscuit and Red's last ride.Very moving;thank you for posting it!

  • One thing you have to look at when you compare Seabiscuit to Secretariat was that when Seabiscuit was really rolling, he was already too old to be in the Triple Crown Races. He won this race when he was seven years old which is a long time for a race horse. Secretariat only ran until he was three and had won the Triple Crown. Seabiscuit beat the Triple Crown winner of 1937 War Admiral in 1938 when Biscuit was already five. Biscuit is the greatest in my humble opinion. :)

  • Santa Anita is horse racing done right. ;])

  • Thank you - Dj

  • Look at the huge crowd in the grandstand ! You don't get big crowds like that anymore.

Horse racing has lost alot of popularity in the last 20 years.

Seabiscuit is my hero, as far as athletes go.

  • Amazing..

  • What a fantastic video, thanks for bringing this to us, I watched the movie again last night and realized that we don't give this horse as much credit as he deserved, even though it has been many years ago, Michele

  • Seabiscuit is my HERO.

    His story is immortal.

Incredible horse, thank for being existed.

  • For many years, this was the Kentucky Derby of the West Coast.

  • YA GO SEABISCUIT!!!!!!!!!!

  • Seabiscuit ran a amazing race her. he was such a good horse! with soo much courage and stranght to him! haha i love him soo much! the was a good race. a very good one!

  • I love Secretariat,he is my 2nd fav horse....Seabiscuite was/is best becoz of his big heart (great soul)......its very hard to stand back on youe feet after so much hate and damage.

Seabiscuite is a model to all the underdogs that there is a 2nd chance.....never give up.)

  • Good Lord, look at the dusty track back in those days! Horsemen wouldn't stand for that now. lol

  • A horse with 52kg (I hope this figure is right) on his back, and an healed from a front ligament injury including a jockey at that age is amazing.

  • In the movie, Seabiscuit & Red won this race after sustaining substantial injuries and being told neither of them would ever race again. Is that true and is this that race?

  • @1ktluvsu yes...movie is base on reality.Its like a documentry.

  • @1ktluvsu Yes, it's true. Read the book; it's fascinating not just as a story of an incredible racehorse, but it vividly captures the people and the era in which he became an icon.

  • @1ktluvsu yes it might be true and that is the race

  • Amazing story, amazing horse!!!

  • he was the best...a wunderfull horse.you will always remain in our heart.

  • Especially given Seabiscuit's age, this was an incredible feat. This was truly a special horse. The real story behind Seabiscuit is even more fascinating than the movies have shown.

  • @veiledbrenda ultimate late bloomer to set a track record at ripe age of 7. he wasn't a freak of nature like Man o War but maybe had the same temperament. he was a different kind of horse and they didn't know how to train him in the begining. great true story.

  • long time ago, My grand pa, is always talking about seabisquit.

  • I think what's so remarkable about this race was Seabiscuit's age when he ran it. He was racing horses 3 and 4 years younger than himself. Not only did he win this race, he set a track record at the same time that would stand for 10 years. THAT'S an exceptional feat. Most horses today never run much past their third year, and they don't see anywhere near the number of races Seabiscuit ran during his life.

  • yea, and dont forget that he carried the most weight in that race too.

  • i love Seabiscuit. I don't understand why he doesn't get more press in the books as such a great horse...maybe i am misinformed, but I still love him! :)

  • In Thoroughbred Champions: Top 100

[American] Racehorses of the 20th Century,

Seabiscuit is listed as #25, between Nashua &

Whirlaway. Pretty good company! And he

got a bestselling book 8 years ago, and his

film bio got a best film Oscar nomination.

Seems pretty well remembered to me. : )

  • really great horse

  • Amazing to see the real one race instead of the movie one.

  • The big cap was the Breeders Cup Classic before the Breeders Cup.

  • no it wasn't. because the breeders cup classic is held annually at a different race track either in the United States or Canada. and the big cap is still called the Santa Anita Handicap, which is still ran today in early March. The Breeder's Cup Classic is ran in late October early November.

In other words, they are 2 completely different races.

  • ilove seabiscuit soooo much and this is his last win but sadly he passed away a few day before his birthday at the age 14.he passed away on may 17 and his birthdayy is may 23 i will get the date soon i forget it but i will get my book and tell u all.we will never forget u seabiscuit :(

  • wow i didnt know he died at that age

    he died young didn't he?

  • Great Video! Thankyou for Posting!!

  • What a great, super-great video. ~ Fer, Railbird Pictures

  • <3 !

  • Race horses today could never last the campaign that horse had. They're not bred for it anymore. Shame really. Horses used to race once a week now you're lucky if they run once a month.

  • Hello, from Great Britain.

How right you are. We had a two year old that won 16 races in 1984, named Provideo-must have run 40 times. There was one that ran more.

Unfortunately legal raceday medications have destroyed American racing, and hasn't done a lot for the Breeding industry as well.

  • look at all that kickback

  • My grandfather was 15 in 1940...

  • 437,000 in earnings in 1940 would be about 8 million today. Not bad. Now if you went through purse money over his career, with the races he won I'm sure it would total over 8 million. Probably more like 15!

  • wow!

(I read about this in the book)

  • Seabiscuit's story...a very inspiring one from beggining to end. That horse had a heart.

  • americas hero..frankieonenote

  • 201&1 is an incredible turn of speed for a seven year old horse. Such a feat wouldn't even be attempted today. Talk about going out on top. Phenominal!

  • awesome vid. tho

  • I couldn't understand anything the announcer was saying! Could you?

  • haha yeahh:P

  • yerr you just need to no racing speek

  • I would be able to but it was so quiet all I heard was Seabiscuit blahblah seabiscuit seabiscuit and its seabiscuit!

  • just imagine, offspring of Ruffian, and Secretariat

  • Post a Secretariat offspring??? Are you kidding??? Ok try these..

Lady's Secret only a filly who was horse of the year beating the boys regularly.Who won over $3 million

Risen Star...lost the Derby by a couple lengths on a bad trip only to win the preakness and Belmont and earned over $2 million

    General Assembly won the Derby

What about Terlingua who brought us Storm Cat and Weekend Suprise who brought us AP Indy

Pancho Villa won almost $700K busks

  • There is no question that Secretariat was a great Broodmare's sire; but this Santa Anita victory is about a horse who was over stretched for years, n here he is coming back at much older age and setting the track record..no modern stallion can do what Seabiscuit did at his older age; horse like him, Discovery known as the iron horse n Swaps, are long gone; the breeding system is killing them; let us just hope for a safe trips on the next legs of the TC n all other races; 134 derby was a tragic.

  • You are right, there will never be another Biscuit! Only geldings would ever even get a chance to compete beyond a 4 year old season. Funny Cide is probably the closest we have seen to this, and he falls mile short of the Biscuit in every way. Economics has sadly replaced the Bravado that used to rule horse racing. Men like Charles Howard and Sam Riddle have been replaced by Billionaires and Shieks, or worse yet, by thier financial advisors!!

  • couldn't say better,

  • no modern stallion can do what Seabiscuit did at his older age; horse like him, Discovery known as the iron horse n Swaps, are long gone;>>

Horse racing has declined in popularity because racing and retiring 3 year olds in the same year does not allow for fans to side with a favorite horse like they would a football or baseball star who plays for several years. Just as you get attached to a horse he retires!

  • Thanks for posting this! What a dirty/dusty track to see here! I enjoy watching Seabiscuit and Secretariat frequently. I wonder which one would have won between them!

  • Heya, Ted! Glad you enjoyed it. As to who would have won between them...Secretariat, hands down. Big Red's raw, universal talent really is unparalleled. He could win on anything, from anywhere. I'm not looking to start a firestorm of debate here, but he's my pick.

    Have a good week!

  • @JugglingTed the real question is who would have won between Secretariat and Man O War....truly the two greatest race horses of all time....Man O War won the Belmont by 20 lengths (vs. Secretariat's 31 lengths), and won another race by over 100 lengths! OUTSTANDING :)

  • I love Seabiscuit! This is a great race, and truly shows the champion that he is.

  • great race! too bad todays racers don't kick up dust like they used to! Seabiscuit was GREAT! but anyway, thank you for putting this on here!

  • You're very welcome! Thanks for the comments.

  • loved it!

all heart.........BTW, John Henry was almost glue until they castrated him.........we all know how that turned out.....you never know with horses......name a worthy of remembering Secretariat offspring?

  • Seabiscuit had the attitude to fight for the win. But I believe Tom Smith deserves all the credit for getting it out of him. Without him I doubt Seabiscuit woud have ever been heard of. Sadly, there has been numerous nameless horses who were handled badly and never got the chance to shine. I'm not saying "Sunny Jim" mishandled him,he knew he could run,but he wouldn't run. He never unlocked that door, yet the old cowboy Tom Smith knew by just looking at Seabiscuit, that he was worth the effort.

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly (I assume you read Hillenbrand's book) Tom Smith was the only reason Seabiscuit got to show the world who he was, I'm sure, and the reason Red got his moment in the spotlight.

  • Yes I did read the book, but I knew about Tom Smith before that. He later was a leading trainer,he trained Jet Pilot, who won the 1947 Kentucky Derby. His talent was pure cowboy, and he learned thru a lifetime of association with the horse. I believe he was the ultimate trainer.

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly (I assume you read Hillenbrand's book) Tom Smith was the only reason Seabiscuit got to show the world who he was, I'm sure, and the reason Red got his moment in the spotlight. >>

It was a team effort...You think without Howard's flair for promotion that Tom Smith could have gotten Riddle to agree to a match?

All three came together--that was what came across in Hillenbrand's book.

  • seabiscuit is an amazing racehorse! he gave hope to people in their depression. little guys can do big things too!

  • nice vid! ive allways wanted to be a jockey! i wish i was able to ride barbaro! wonderful video! i love seabiscuit! he was auwsome!

  • Love the video. These old clips are so exciting. They show the time when horse racing was so popular and horses were true heros. They still are! These animals deserve our respect and appreciation--especially after their racing days are over. Thanks so much for posting. I also enjoyed seeing the movie stars--especially Tyrone Power.

  • Very well said! Thank you very much for watching.

  • this is amazing footage! you have all the best races!

  • this is so cool

  • how do you get these races???

    this is awesome!

  • All the best!!!!Please,NO SORING!!!!!!

  • So let's just recap here: You've got his entire match race, you've got highlights of his 37&38 Big Cap disappointments, and you've also got his 1940 Big Cap, where he finally breaks through as an old man. A fine Seabiscuit collection for your loyal viewers to see!

  • Thank you kindly. It's been terrific to experience.

    Come one, come all!

  • This is a diamond in the rough. Thanks so much for this post. Seabiscuit, in many ways, serves to uplift and inspire those who feel discarded or face such challenging obstacles in life. Now why can't I find footage of Sham? I am exhausting all my leads trying to track down my own white whale, lol

  • Here here!

  • Thank you both for the kind support.

    I very much appreciate it.

    God bless.

  • Wow!Thanks so much for posting this video!I love Seabiscuit! In fact, I was going to watch a Seabiscuit DVD I just received. Thanks cf1970!!

  • BTW- I am referring to a documentary I received.I loved the movie also!

  • Glad you like it! Thanks for watching.

  • Ahab finally caught his white whale! What a fantastic post. 2:01&1 is an incredible time for that day and age, and it still stands up today as a very good time, and he was carrying 130 pounds! What a battler that little Seabiscuit was.

  • I couldn't have said it better. That horse sure was amazing.

    Take care.
