  • loooovvvvveee!

  • I was not aware he had other songs besides Just Got Paid. I like this!

  • cute gurl

  • as cheesy as they may look now, 80s videos are pretty good for the technology they had back then.

  • sucky dancer, but still the cutest guy ever....that smile....aaaahhhh

  • @stanofsteel211 he does has a cute smile i'm glad you pointed that out

  • Yes indeed, a much better song than "JGP". This is my favorite from him, loved it when I heard it nearly 25 years ago!

  • Produced by Jeff Smith for the New Music Group 'under the direction of..' KASHIF

the LP was def. helmed by great writers and producers making that an LP with a few potential hit singles. "Lady in the shadow" "Cover Girl" "All night" "Penthouse Lover", all great songs :)

  • Thats Melba Moore on second lead vocals! LOVE THIS SONG! Feel good music!

  • Usher of da' 80's

  • Johnny Kemp clearly went to the Mick Jagger dancing school with those cool moves.

  • daaaamn.. kashif's basslines are driving me crazy..

  • I knew their was another song he did BEFORE "just got paid" and it was a better song, This is the song. Has the 80's sound (e.g. Evelyn King) Thanks for posting!

  • Wow! never heard this until now!!! He was a better singer than "Just Got Paid" let us know! Damned shame we boxed him into being a so-called one hit wonder.

  • @sointenz totally agree with you about his quality as a singer. I was amazed when i heard his voice on this song.

  • just another new jack swing king

  • kashif is the best.

  • I absolutely love this song!! The refreshing thing about his dancing is that he's not a professional dancer. He's just feeling his song and jamming to it. Love it!!

  • im 15 im so old school idc though now a days its not all about sex

  • @carnyboy04 i agree

  • i love this song.

  • OMG I used to love the song!

  • @MrDavidbobo25 1986

  • Man! This song takes me back to my Music Theatre class days (high school/Fame-lol). They don't make good music like this anymore. Hey, whatever happened to Johnny Kemp anyway?

  • I remember when Power 106 in Los Angeles was playing the hell out of this song. Haven't heard it in a long time and I am glad I found it.

  • dam his whole album in my opinion was and still is the bomb, go jhonny.

  • Oh this was that jam. But does anyone remember his song "Changes", the slow jam?

  • awesome track

Kemps moves are off the chain:D

  • i love this song

  • Produced by Kashif, who happens to be one the Great's, ask Kenny G!!!

  • I thought it had that Kashif taste to it. I loved this song, but it could have been a much bigger hit. Oh, well - at least we have "Just Got Paid" 3 years later

  • you don't even have to ask kenny g...just ask da black folks, lol...we love kashif...peace

  • Produced by The New Music Group with Jeff Smith under the direction of Kashif.. ;p

  • Tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuune!

    Respect my man.

Like the rest of the guys on here I have not heard this since 1986 as some mate knicked it off me.

Please could you post more off this album as there are some bad to the bone tunes on there.

Much better than the Just got paid album.

Kashif, and La La, Jeff Smith and co total respect.

Check out the Wootens as well.

    Thanks for posting man memories...

  • Does anyone know who does the female vocals on this?

  • man--his energy in this video is so refreshing! can't help but be n2 this song. it has taken me waaaaaay back and I absolutely love it!!!!

  • Takes me back to the Spring of 1986. Haven't heard this song in ages. Love this groove.

  • Damn. I havent heard this song since it was on the fuckin' radio..in 1986. i just typed johnney kemp's name and the song in search...and it came up. Damn...flashback overload.

  • i never had achance to hear this, peesful1 i know how you felt when you were young , i had the same feelings, my cousin used to go dancing in the club with his big afro, and i used to be sad cause i really wnated to be with him, i used to look up to him, boy days were great.

  • My FAVORITE Johnny Kemp song. I've been looking for this. THANK YOU!!!Reminds me of New York City in the 80's when my sister and her friends would go to the Red Parrot, and the Silver Shadow, I would get so mad because I wanted to go but was to young. Gwen Guthrie playing all over the radio. Those were the days.

  • This was the song!! But he played me on this album thought only one other good song. I left his ass in Jamaice for that!!

  • Johnny Kemp started up in the band "Network". They put out an album called "I Need You" in 1983 that included a song called "Cover Girl". Kemp recorded a newer version of it for his 1986 album that included this track "Just another lover". A very good album if you ask me. Then he put out "secrets of flying" which included "Just Got Paid".. and now the last time I saw him was at Keith Sweat's Sweat Hotel Party or whatever that was. He performed "Just got paid"..

  • bobfunk , do you know the song " what I like, hey hey hey what I like...." from Johnny Kemp. I look all over the internet can't find it. video, audio you name it.

  • You cannot find it most likely because it was NOT recorded by Johnny Kemp. It was a Jellybean production and it hit #1 on the Dance charts that same year back in 1986. They are the dance group called Anthony & The Camp, and the title of that record was appropriately titled "What I Like". This is just in case you have not solved the mystery yet. :)

  • I think he needs dancing lessons...

  • I still love this song twenty years later.

  • How often do radio stations play this song on "flashback" or "old school" segments, cause for some weird reason..I never hear it on radio! The song was a big Top 20 hit in 1986 and was hot...wonder if MTV played this joint at all? (Azone01..need you to answer this buddy boy lol)

  • Never! And never hear it on radio when they play old songs. It was played in the summer of 86. I saw part of the video in a mall of all places.

  • i never hear this song on the radio anymore either. The radio station that I listen to out of OKC plays alot of R&B from the 90's when they play old school R&B.

  • I know you were not asking me, but just so you know this song did play on the radio alot and when i was little the song use to come on that old tv (video) show called Ny HOT PICKS. It was a video show that was out way before BET. It played all those old school video's prince, lisa lisa, cameo, full force, luther vandros, new edition, you name it! Johnny kemp was one one of them and I loved this song then & even now. MTV probally did not becuase at one point it only really played pop & rock vids.

  • It was New York Hot Tracks, not Hot Picks and it was very big in the early to mid 80's in New York City. Actually BET (started playing videos as early as 1981) came out a few years before New York Hot Tracks, but BET was only available in select US Cities until about 1984/1985 and a majority of people did'nt start to get cable until the late 1980's. Thats why people growing up in the 80's with black music videos often neglect to mention BET's Video Soul and Video Vibrations....

  • .....those from New York know NY Hot Tracks and Video Music Box/those from Maryland/DC/North Virginia know Music Video Connection and Hit City and those from the Bay Area know Soul Beat because those were local program shows that played over 90(+)% of black videos that MTV refuses and Nite Tracks and Friday Night Videos does'nt play enough of.

  • I never hear it, I doesn't get played.

  • I very much doubt MTV played this, but it was played frequently on BET and urban music shows. The only black artists MTV was playing around this time was those who songs hit the pop charts (by 1986, they were adding more R&B artists to their playlist, but only with pop appeal). Come to think of it, they never played any videos by New Edition or Anita Baker and they had pop hits.

  • Thanks for that insight, as all this time, I had no idea so many music video shows existed regionally/locally. My older sister sometimes speaks of some interview Anita Baker did back in the mid 1980s when "Sweet Love" was a hit and how she mentioned that she heard that MTV refused to play her since she didn't "show enough skin" or something like that, although I'm not sure how true it is...still, it wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm actually shocked cause I STILL thought MTV played "Sweet Love"

  • It's a huge huge shame that MTV didn't play Anita, as i at leaast thought they played black artists as their song became Top 10 or Top 20 pop hits....and I still wonder to this day if MTV played Natalie Cole's "Jump Start", Gladys Knight & the Pips' "Love Overboard", Levert's "Casanova", Midnight Star's "Operator"...(yeah, all the Calloway brothers tunes! LOL). Looking back, thinking of producers like Kashif, Jam/Lewis, Mcelroy/Foster, Babyface, Quincy, and ALL their artists...with no MTV PLAY!

  • Do you know who wrote this?

Has a very "Kashif" like sound. This also reminds me of "Evelyn Champagne King."

  • Kashif wrote this track. It would be featured on Kemp's debut self-titled album. Believe it or not, Kemp isn't a one hit wonder as most people would think based on his biggest, JUST GOT PAID. However, the smooth and slick groove JUST ANOTHER LOVER became Kemp's first top 20 R&B hit back in '86.

  • Although, Just Got Paid, put him on the map, Johnny Kemp should have been a much stronger and bigger force in music.

I miss you, Johnny. Where are you?

  • i know him..hes bahamian

  • he looks like a black bruce lee

  • He kind of looks mixed.

  • I am looking for one of his tracks chorus is : what I like, hey hey hey, hey what I like ...from Johnny Kemp about the same year 1986 ? w

  • I always had a tough time finding this at the stores.

  • it's unbelieveble.....22 years later i see the video from J Kemp for the first time!!!!! Great (dance) song.... thanks from Holland.

  • I remember this song from back in the days. I loved it then and i love it even more now. It brings back so many memories of my childhood, the 80"s!

  • I was in this video, albeit briefly. It was directed by the now mega-famous Wayne Isham. There were 3 girls; the beautiful dreadlocked one they featured (closest to Johnny's color), me (dark chocolate), and Chynna Phillips (blonde;later to be a member of Wilson Phillips). Look in the musical break for fast flashing images of all of us. We had fun shooting it. Johnny is very sweet.

  • Really? Damn, you were attractive in that video!

  • I agree!! Same with the dreadlocked cutie!

  • how you look now.... 22 years later!!!! Men, i love video...

  • and it looks like he was a dancer too.

  • Awesome! I remember this from BET's Video Soul and Video Vibrations back in the mid 80's, about 1986. Thanks for posting!

  • OMG memeories man. this song is SOOOOOOO kashif though. u can hear kashif in the background.

  • Video Vibrations and Video Soul was tha s**t!

  • Yes it was. And so was that BET show that had 2.5 hours of music, but also had double or triple play for certain artists old songs. I miss the 80's.

  • That would be Video Vibrations!!

  • I know Kashif produced this song, but am I the only one who caught that this song looks and sounds like Madonna's "Lucky Star" (especially the intro)?

  • LOL! you're not the only one. It DOES sound like Madonna's "Lucky Star."

  • Can you please upload more of Johnny Kemp's music!

  • Wow, Johnny Kemp is a Bahamian [From The Bahamas]my mother told me he use to live right around the corner from her before he went to the US and became a singer!...Nice!

  • I LOVE this song....why is so overlooked? I don't even hear it much on old school/R&B radio, but it was a hot jam in 1986. Too bad the Pop world completely missed out on this gem and didn't take notice until "Just Got Paid" came out.

  • It is soo good to know I am not the only person who remembers this song from back in the day. I really loved this song as a kid!!!

  • I remember this song too. I actually liked this song just as much as I liked "Just Got Paid". I used look forward to coming home late on Friday nights and seeing this video on one of the Friday night video shows.

  • Song's still badass. Spring-summer 1986 had some of the best songs ever. This song is actually better than just got paid.

  • T totally agree wid you man!!!!!!!!!

And thre video is just off tha hook.

  • @rodimusslime69 Agree totally. "Just got paid" was tacky to me. This was one of those "Soul Train" Saturday jams that was popular with the real soul music culture

  • I love this song. One of Kashif's best produced singles :)

  • There's a section in the middle where you can see brief flashes of two other women, one very dark (that's me, Durga McBroom) and one fair and blond (Chynna Phillips). This video was directed by Wayne Isham, who went on to direct much bigger artists, like Bon Jovi and Ricky Martin.

  • Johnny Kemp is performing at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar on Saturday June 16th!
