i have a question, and i hope you can answer! :) i just started violin last week, and it's sounding pretty good, but i wanna try to learn vibrato as early as now so I can progress better in my playing. And because I'm a beginner, my left hand is really weak, like, normally. Sometimes it's like I'm not even controlling it, lol. Could you suggest some left hand exercises so that I could flex my left hand better? It would be great to get a helpful answer. :) Thank you :)
when I do my vibrato, my thumb moves...... is that alright? I don't want my thumb to move because I don't want it to, but it does? How can I make it not to move, but is there another way?
Thanks, this is really awesome. I'm a sophomore who's been playing violin since 4th grade and i've always had issues trying to attempt vibrato. I took lessons to with someone who was very qualified and even they weren't able to help me as much as this has. I can finally do the motion right. Thanks so much!
Hmm, when I hear the ways people learn violin, they say to move in a "rolling motion", but I don't quite understand how that's done. Can you help explain this to me? Also, do you move your thumb, like bend it too?
Thank you so much for uploading this. I am in 5th grade and started Orchestra at school for about three weeks already and I've been repeating this video all the time and I finally learned vibrato and thanks for the tips. Some tutorials didnt help at all. :)
either ur really small...or thats the biggest violin i have ever scene...OR it a viola and not a violin..and I'm gonna asume one of the first to are correct...because mixing up a violin and a viola make you look not so smart..and since you play the intrument...one would assume that u wud know the difference between the 2..as the only people i know that mix them up are people who dont play them and havent even heard of a viola..ps i play the viola
Can you do tips on vibrato in 7th position? I am very new to strings anyways, but i have vibrato on every position. I'm currently learning the Elgar cello concerto transcribed by tertis(i play viola) and i cant seem to get vibrato out when you switch to what appears to be 6th or 7th position.
@zclipse i have a question, when you do vibrato, do you move your arm becouse i have seen people move their arm and others not and i really need to know. i would be very greatfull if you reply thanks and nice tutorial by the way!
@meofcource000 Some people use wrist vibrato, some use arm vibrato, and others use a combination of both. There is no right or wrong way as long as it is producing a good sound. I use mostly arm vibrato, but in this video I am just trying to show you the basic movement of your finger. You can then chose to either move your arm or your wrist to get the actual vibrato.
@Zclipse Thanks! I;m in sixth grade and they havent taught us how to do this yet (Yes, I'm learning at school...) And I just wanted to know how to do this! :D
Hi, I just wanted to know if vibrato is harder on smaller hands? I'm Asian and I have like REALLY small hands. A fifth grader's hand was bigger than mine. I find it really hard to curve my finger when I play. Do you have any advice?
Actually most Asian people are really good violinists! Even though they have small hands, they have really flexible fingers and that makes up for it. Unless you're unlucky like me and have small hands AND inflexible fingers . . . You may not be able to curve your fingers as much as people with larger hands. And you may also need to drop your thumb lower on the violin's neck, sometimes mine almost goes under the neck for big stretches, and that will help your fingers reach.
Another tip that I can give you is to place your 4th finger down first on the violin, and allow your thumb to go wherever it feels comfortable to let your 4th finger stay curved. You may need to bring your thumb forward, and let it make contact lower on the violin's neck. Once you have a good curved fourth finger placement, stretch the rest of your fingers back, keeping your 4th finger in place. It is easier to stretch back than to reach forward.
@ThatAsianAcrossTheSt yes it is because u do vibrato on the pads on your fingers and since your hands are small you have less pad, watch Hillary Hahn because she has small hands
This a little different from how I developed and use my vibrato I use more of a rolling action side to side. My teacher hasn't said anything about it and I can still deliver tone but is this a better way?
thanks sooo much. Im only in fith grade but now i am the only one in my class learning how! I already was doing it but it really wasn't the right way. That helped lot.
Thank u this helped a lot i really like to do things individually and my dad kept saying he wnted to teach me so i just did this and it is a miracle worker!!!
I still can't seem to get the hang of it though, my dad has always been saying my fingers have grown a lot since i've started playing and i'm just now trying to learn it but i just cant get the rhythm fast enough. I've got a full size violin but i think I've grown as much as a will for a while. Any thoughts on how to solve my size problem?
@nandre24 Don't try to force it, especially if you are just learning vibrato. Start out with a very slow vibrato, and gradually increase the speed on the metronome one notch at a time. If at any time you feel tense, then take a few steps backwards and slow down again. You can start out as slowly as you need to and then very gradually increase the speed until you get faster.
@nandre24 you should start the viola! orchestras always need more viola players, i started the viola this year but still occasionally play my violin. very useful instrument.
hi im a 14 yearold girl and i have been playing violin since third grade and i am now etering my freshmen year in a few months. i feel imberresed 2 say this but...... I NEVER LEARNED HOW TO DO VIBRATO IN ALL THOSE YEARS. there i said it
@screamoutloud430 Never having learned is better than learning too early and developing bad habits. Most people start vibrato too soon! You should have a solid foundation before even thinking about attempting vibrato. If you you have good left hand technique and can play all of the major and minor scales with excellent intonation in 1st position then you are ready to start working on vibrato. It's never too late to learn, but you can definitely start too early!
@Zclipse hi, I just want to ask how many months or years have you studied playing violin? Coz I'am planning to have my violin lessons this summer for only 1 month, can I learn a lot from a month?
Hi im 13 years old and before i REALLY hated the violin. But now I fell in love with it.Can you tell me what size should I get? Also what type of violin do you have?If i can master the violin I will get a cello and after an electrick violin. So yeah im kinda new to this so I have no idea half the things im saying.(^3^)-Bye!
