It would take something with enough potential energy--i.e. petroleum (-powered motor) or massive batteries (powering an electric motor)--to make the design viable, as one human being could not possibly overcome everything that would need to be overcome to make this an even theoretically practical machine.
Maybe design a motor that runs on happy thoughts? Um...yes we can?
Not to be sexist, but I think a man would have a better weight to power ratio. Women, naturally carry more fat than muscle per weight. Also, that long heir probably weigh at least a pound or more.
There should be gears. She was going at maximum speed, so the lift could have been more, even if it was just a proof of concept. I think this idea is great, and they should keep working with it.
This is a breakthrough, although mostly psychological. Now that we know it can me done, it's just a matter of developing technology like lighter than air components and adding control surfaces.
This is precisely the kind of research that will be useful in the coming decades.
Not the helicopter part maybe, but making strong, light structures with very little material and getting the most useful work possible out of a relatively weak 'engine'.
This is a study of efficiency. We've been making helicopters that beat the air into submission for decades, there's a lot to learn from one that seduces it into agreement.
If you just climb on top of the thing you could get higher. I don't know if this is just a really early development. But if this is the model of crafts they will stick to I think this idea will never take off.
@PortuguesePunisherrr Its a student program, calm down hahahaha. Christ, all these comments are crucifying these guys about it being a waste of money, its already been done ect ect. Yet everyone seems to have failed to read the description and work out it was for a competition.
It's the second human powered helicopter to ever get off the ground. Thats an achievement. Comments are so fucking dumb on youtube.
Hey assholes, this isn't about making a human powered helicopter that goes a few inches off the ground. It's about testing the science to see if it's possible. There is no telling what will come of this research in the future. Might help discover something that will save your life someday.
There is no such thing as useless science and stupid experiments...
@psychomelody Useless science examples, (actual experiments): A study shows that early teens that have falatios are more like to have sex at an early age; A elephant was injected with 3000 time the usual dosage of LSD( with no other prior studies ), the animal died 2 ours later. @kyebean Unless you're a scientist, and I know I'm not, we are in no position whatsoever to decide what kind of priorities there are in the learning process. By even assuming such shows such ignorance and arrogance that I just can't stand your comment and have blocked you.
@psychomelody I think I'm in a position to say, that with very limited funding for science, and problems like climate change, petroleum dependency, environmental destruction, water and food shortage and disease, projects that have no foreseeable applications are not the best use of scientific funding. Clearly the point was for it to be a quad copter , obviously not the most efficient usage of the available (wo)man power but it worked.. for a moment at least.
Holy crap commenters are so stupid on this channel... Don't you realize this is an exploit? If you read the article you would have learnt that it was only the second ever human-powered helico to lift off the ground. And for the gear ratios, each rotor is 13 meters long and there is 4, can you imagine the force that would be needed with a higher ratio?
clearly these idiots dont even know about gear ratios wtf, i can safely say these retards were lead to create this , this was not an idea of any of those retards clapping like they achieved something, TOOLS!
