Though I appreciated your comment about people on both sides acting stupidly, I do believe that some names (notably Amherst and Moncton) should be removed because of their role in our history.

Canada has changed basing its judgement on simple rhetorics and borderline racism when talking about Quebec. The CBC, CTV, Globe, Post and other websites will show you what I mean: People would not dare say about Muslims, Africans, etc. what they say about Quebecois by fear of being called racists.

I think that diversity is a sign that the world is sane. Therefore, I think we should try to promote it. In a world context where learning english is very seductive because of its internationality, mesures have to be take to preserve any culture treatened by aculturation. A way to do so is by protecting there langages. A little reminder: more than 400 billions english speakers lives north of Mexico and only 8 millions french speakers. If I do business in US, I have to serve people in English. If you want to do the same in Quebec, you have to serve people in French. If you go Mexico it is Spanish. That's life I guess!

Culture encompasses language and culture, particularly Canadian culture is not defined by the colour of one's skin. I can be a woman of colour and be french, english, aboriginal or afghani-canadian. i don't see where you obtained that information... quebec does not prevent immigration and they are not racist either... there are many black haitians living in quebec - and inter-married... however, quebec is a french speaking nation older than Canada and pre-dating the influx of anglos to the rest of Canada. french is the language of quebec... to live there you must speak french... that is a reality... if you emigrated to Germany, you would have to learn German... would you not...?

Immigration has occurred since the creation or conception of borders which predates the settlement of western europe. All major european countries were empires, including France (look at Africa), Britain just happened to be the largest.
