Shame they cut these from the original cut. His expressions give away the humanity that's still buried somewhere beneath "The Butcher." I think he really does feel remorse for some things he's done, but we can't be sure without scenes like this that show us the whole story.
Of course, I might only be saying such things because Jason Isaacs is drop dead gorgeous and his handsomeness controls me. If Tavington had been played by some ugly bloke we knew nothing about, would we be on his side? ;D
It seems like he was Gibson's counterpart among the British, an outsider (A Custer type anti-hero). His bloody war tactics probably were not welcome by the more old fashioned British Command, but they were necesary unfortunally against the non-traditional guerrilla tactics of the American colonists led by Gibson's character. The film was overly bias against him and depicted him as a cruel character, but I am sure that the colonists treated British Royalists the same way during the war too.
I live in Oregon (no lightning bugs) and visited family in West Virginia last summer. I reacted the same way he did to the lightning bugs. I was in awe!
That is a really interesting view of Tav. Looking at the beauty of the fireflies, the way his face changes. I love those scenes too of Cornwallis. That actor is certainly good in that role. So arrogant!
Wonderful to share these two special scenes showing Jason Isaacs at his very best, subtle, hurt, carefully controlled! Ah, our beloved beautiful Tavington! thank you from all who could not find the disc with these lovely small scenes of such character!
the redcoats were always cooler than the patriots.
