These stations, Caroline, London, Luxemburg etc. were revolutionary wonders and thus hounded by the establishment authorities representing such duds as BBC1 with its cheap copy rubbish. Without these fantastic "pirate boats" we're expected to be spoon fed here in Germany with cheap shit like Bayern 1 (Bavarian radio, channel 1) with its typical German establishment, politically correct propaganda. Although sorely missed, the "pirate" stations are far from dead and will return in a new form.
Ronan named the ship Caroline after seeing the wall photograph of President Kennedy sitting at his desk in the Oval Office busy at work and tugging at his sleeve is his 3 years old daughter Caroline. The President stops what he is doing and is looking down at Caroline with a broad smile on his face.Ronan was touched by this 3 years old girl causing the most powerful man in the world to happily drop everything he was doing to listen to her.
Soooooo many memories! "Ding Ding - 199(metres) - this is Caroline!" Remember going to 6 Chesterfied Gardens to cut an audition tape for the ship, and going down (what seemed to me!) forever zillions of floors to the basement studios. I was RUBBISH!!! All I wanted to play was 'oldies' and the woman in charge said "Haven't you got any hit records????". Oh, well. . . . .thanks for the memory!! KRS
Just listen to it neeed I say anymore what a record and an absolute ideal one for the brilliant Radio Caroline it was a class station but the gobshites at BBC Radion 1 had to stop all that through government legislation an unbelievable asshole move on the labour government at the time a legend station I loved it as did millions of other people in uk and europe Pat Allen Burnley
Whenever I go into science class, my teacher always sings the bit that goes 'her name was Caroline' to me, it's so annoying! (Because my name is Caroline)
This opened 'Caroline' at 5am each morning. I was a young London police officer around 1963/64 travelling to duty for 'early turn' (6am to 2pm) and tuned into this fantastic sig tune.
@SilversurferBarry I took my transistor everywhere I went. I mean everwhere! Frightened of missing a great song. Oh magic days. Thanks for the memories here.
@rhh1945 - I was a kid with a tranny (that's TRANSISTER RADIO - not Ford Transit van or transsexual!) then. You must be very, VERY old! [Of course, 64-5, from your handle - silly me!]
Personally, I preferred London (whose theme is ALSO on this channel) with its slick, PAMS jingles - and Kenny Everett (but then, I WAS a KID at the time!)
In the Sixties, I couldn't have DREAMT one day I'd be putting the ships' photos and themes up on a World-wide CCTV system!
Do you know what the song was that closed Radio Caroline North every night. I know the Fortunes opened the station every morning. The closing song was called Caroline but who did it?
If I may interject, you're BOTH right. As I stated below, "Emperor" didn't MEAN anything in French - thus in France, Rosco was known as PRESIDENT Rosco - much to the annoyance of the then-President's people!
I once met him - nice guy. In Britain, he was known as "Emperor Rosco" - but apparently Emperor doesn't mean anything in France, so he went with President - which apparently annoyed your government!
My pleasure! There's some pieces from Radio London and R.N.I. on this channel also. Plus some SERIOUSLY old pieces from Fifties BBC radio - if you can recall THAT far back!
SWEET TIMES

@smallstepswmp - Don't recall - I must have been in bed by then!
Radio London's was "Big Lil" ("Sonowaltz") - which is elsewhere on this channel.

@rhh1945 : Caroline is still there ! Satellite and Internet. Not allowed to give URL. Google Radio caroline and you'll be amazed .
