At what point does a piece go from blues to bluesy? From planned/wirtten to Improvisation. If they improvised in some key other than the "background" bass notes, then they would sound horrible! I am not exactly sure why everyone is saying that this isn't improv? I guess they do this routine every night and it is exactly the same? (unfortunately no longer) It must have some other meaning in the commenter's countries...
Most artists wouldn't be reading the comments on the bootlegged videos of them posted by youtube users, so it's kinda silly to talk to them directly. But it's also sad here, because Eric Roche is dead..
It's great one of a kind and great to watch whats the point in bickering over how difficult it is to play.. play it yourself or shut up i think its awesome and a fukken inspiration for my newly created slap technique.

Good on you mate,I gave you a few thumbs up as I think your the only one here talking any sense.I just don't get how this old man has got so many hits!!If he was to appear in our local blues club he would be booed off almost immediately!!
y'know, all these thumbs down comments on my statements are really unnecessary, I have not said anything at all 'bad' about the performance.
It's just a matter of syntax and semantics, minor issue some might say, but pretty important to moi.
the whole entire thing is a Blues, except for when they go off into guitar/percussion land and abandon harmony all together does it cease to be a blues, outside of that, any form that goes I IV bVI V is a blues. that's all.
Well, even technically, that is not correct. AND, "A blues" doesn't quite capture the sense of what all has fallen under "THE blues" over the last 110 years. Yup even under a "12-bar blues"!
why is it so necessary to cal a funky blues jam an Improvisation. The term Improvisation implies the "creation of something original that did not exist prior to it's 'improvised' performance".
uhmm, metaladdict, can you go out and purchase some ears and then try to tell me how a I-IV-V progression with a bVI to V turnaround that takes precisely 12 bars to get through is in any way shape or form not a blues?
While you are right in the first instance, as I said, you are wrong in the 2nd, this IS a blues.
Derek Bailey played improvisation, these guuys are playing funky blues jams.
hey again, I appreciate how passionate you are about this performance, everyone needs their touchstones but the fact is I have heard this kind of thing a thousand times over and just prefer a more adventurous form of improvisation.
I do have to suggest that there really isn't anything all that technical about calling the chords in a tune by their scale degree/chord function names. We owe it to ourselves to strive for a basic form of musical literacy, 'slike knowing how to spell 'cat & 'dog'. la
Jacques seems to be the one improvising. The main riff eric seems to be playing is superstition (not that I can spell it). The whole thing is awesome though. Just cause it looks like so much fun.
Yes, between 3:30 and 4:20, it's a tipical funky blues jam. I don't think they learned it. So it was an improvisation. And I think Mr Stotzem knows exactly what improvisation is, and he knows what he did that night.
I just say something is improvisation when you make it on the spot, instead of having it composed in advance. That's how it's used in general in the English language, whether you're talking about stand-up comedy, or music. That's what most people mean by "improvisation" normally. It's just about figuring out what you'll do on the spot. By that definition, a jam is necessarily about improvisation. Blues is just a genre, doesn't matter what genre it is.. Still improvisation man, though jaded, yes.
This is just out of this world for an improvisation !! I've watched this like 45 times today and sent it to so many mates haha. Its not everyday I get my mind blown like this. RIP ERIC and Jacques I want to shake your hand, what a great guitarist you are. Take care!!!!
Fond memories of seeing Eric live, totally amazing - im sorry that i never got to see you live while i was still in england Jacques, you are brilliant, you must come tour Canada haha
Great, both of you. You harmonize very well. It's a fun to watch. So sad that Eric died too young. I've never seen him playing live. But I had the pleasure to see you, Jaques, several times. Have a happy new year and all the best for 2008, Bernd B. (your new subsciber)

If you want to see this done right, look at Rodrigo y gabriela. A valiant effort though.

The comments are getting way out of line here, just take the piece as it is and enjoy it without over analysing it.

The way you epanded a 10 second solo into
5+minutes was inspired.
I only have one suggesion and that is to
invest in some unicycles and red noses
and ring your local circus!
They need acts like yours.

Improvise all you want ON THE BLUES, it's still a blues.
Abandon conventional harmony and tonal hierarchies and then it is an IMPROVISATION.
cut n dried.
good will to y'all

Call a Spade an Spade and call a blues a blues.
Not saying it lacks anything but but but...

Blues is blues
Improvisation is Improvisation
This falls in the latter category. :D

Its an improvisation because i doubt you'll ever here anything like this again :).
Its not just a blues jam, you can get as technical as you want. This is one of a kind. Its more than a jam.
