The incredible, risk-taking, fantastic driver we knew died in Melbourne in his accident back in 2001 with Ralph Schumacher. That's too bad. He should have chose to leave BAR in 2000 when Renault and McLaren were looking to sign him. At this point, Villeneuve was still a fantastic driver, probably the most exciting of the bunch. His friendship with Craig Pollock ultimately failed him. It's too bad, I think this guy had the talent to end up with 2 or 3 championships had he made the right choices.
Schumacher lost 1997 to one of the fastest and most risk taking drivers. Villeneuve FTW! Villeneuve rules coz he drives the car on limits! Alonso doensn´t,fuck Ferrari 2010! Schumi WDC 2010 or Webber!
If you ask me, Villeneuve doesn't get enough credit for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. In 2000, he was more often than not the best non Ferrari-McLaren driver and in 2001 he was the only driver of a midfield car to score 2 podiums. After that though, yeah he was abysmal at best.
Jacques is one of the best, he scored good points with shitty cars after 97. He has some of what his dad, Gilles (the greatest), use to show some time ago. We miss you in F1...
The 97 Williams was good. He was just one of the worst "developers". He had car control and that was pretty much all. So he was fast once the car was perfect. If it wasn't he couldn't contribute like a Senna or Schumacher to help the engineers make it better. Williams was at the top and with Villeneuve it gradually gone worse every year. With BAR he didn't show anything anymore. What Michael Schumacher showed in the 96 Ferrari was magical (especially in the rain where Ville had the most trouble)

Then, when it counted the most, he bent over and slammed schuey at jerez '97, that alone shows qualities that make him a great driver and worthy world champ. lazerpod66 comments like a fricken expert. Also, JV's podiums at germany and hungary in '98 were as good as any of his wins, except estoril '96.

I hate nobody, let me explain about Villeneuve. He came to f1 with the best car and won...After, nothing. Why? Because he's a lazy driver who can't do much with an inferior car. Villeneuve is an average driver no more. What is he doing today???nothing much, that's how good he is.
But Frentzen waa a really weird egg. He fell asleep when he entered F1(1993) and woke up for 1 season(1999) and then fell right asleep again, really fucked up and very irregular driver.
1997 - a champion chassis, good pace, but inability to put everything together in one race.
1998 - slower car, poorer results.
1999 - one & only season, when Heinz really was in a shape to finally prove himself as a race winner, beat Schumacher fair & square & win the title with a bit of luck.
2000-03 - a reminder from his Sauber era. Slow, unreliable cars, but still trying to make the best out of them.

JV is a great F1 driver 1996 debut year had a fantastic year 2nd overall I fink,1997 Champ, he went toe to toe with possibly the greatest F1 driver ever in MSC only too people i fink of gone toe to toe with MSC (Hakkiaion and Alonso)he also made F1 interseting to watch when he came in 1996

Jv is one of those rare people, who personifies what a real driver is. He had more talent in his little finger, than most of the driver shave today. He spoke out, and was loved and critisized(sp), and he didn´t take any shit. Uncompromizing, annoying as hell, but deeply devoted to the sport. He is way up there with drivers like Hunt, Rosberg and dare I say Farina?

Non, Il à aidé l'écurie BAR qui commencait, il a prit la décision de descendre. Je n'ai pas manqué une course et j'avoue avoir été frustré un tas de fois. Par contre, il était toujours premier de son écurie devant son coéquipier. Ca veut dire qu'il tirait le maximum de sa voiture. Quand t'as un chaudron comme char....tu peux-tu vraiment gagner quelque chose? Un tas de pilotes ont le talent en F1, mais c'est l'écurie la plus riche qui l'emporte.
Pantoute. Quand tu es bon, tu progresses. Prends Schumacher, il est arrivé chez ferrari, et il a remonté l'équipe. Villeneuve, c'est connu, il est paresseux techniquement, incapable de faire évoluer la voiture. Lache moi avec le fait d'etre 1er dans son equipe, ses coequipiers etaient tous des moumounnes. I think Jacques Villeneuve is one of the most interesting characters in the history of the sport, especially in relation to his on-track performance.
The way he went from an impeccable championship contender from 1996 and 1997 to lacklustre performances toward the end of his career is fascinating.

i liked jacques a lot, everyone says hes an undeserving champion just because he had the best car in 97. but he came from indy in 96 which many great drivers has shown to be hard and was instantly quick. he pretty much ruined damon hill's career and you have to remember he was up against the best driver in the world in 97, best car or not, no easy fight. on top of that, he had balls, just look at his pass on schumi at estoril 96! and he always spoke his mind. we should admire him for that

Villeneuve was hell lucky to win it in 97, shoeing the best car/engine combo(He needed that). He was a technically lazy driver, incapable to developp a car and it all showed during his 4 year stint at BAR. He got kicked out of f1, and went to nascar just to make an even bigger fool of himself. Now, what is he doing today?????NOTHING......

kirbyandhishuitar, you acting as if hamilton or alonso need the very best car on the grid to win... they don't, alonso won a race in 2003 and hamilton from what he's shown in a car that's still slower than the ferrari's could win in BMWs and maybe even the 2008 renault that alonso won 2 races in...
villeneuve could only win when his car was so much better than anybody elses ('96 and'97) and i seriously doubt that if he were even with mclaren in 2005 that he could win a grand prix in merit..

Lol, he did have the best car at Williams, but he was such a turd, he just had to prove to the world how big an asshole he was and went to fuck with Pollock at BAR. He sat in a top car for the 3 last races of 2004 and looked very bad(lol). Then at Sauber BMW, he was outclassed and his immediate replacement Kubica proved instantly better than him. J.Villeneuve is one of F1's biggest joke ever.

You're right but the Villeneuve fans will simply vote your post down so it will be "hidden". Villeneuve only performed in 1996 and 1997, the years when he was driving in a car that was atleast 2 levels better then anything else. He left Williams to go to BAR because they paid better. After his title in 1997 his career was virtually over because he just sucked after he won the championship once.

I like Villenueve, but liking the guy doesn't mean I think he was the greatest of all time. But he's also not the only F1 driver ever to perform better in a better car and worse in a worse car. Compare him only to his teammates. True, Hill won the 1996 title, but what did Frentzen do in '97? And at BAR, did Zonta, Panis and Button? Alonso went on to win with Renault, but JV was only there for a few races, and past his prime.
Even Senna looked way better at McLaren than he did at Lotus, no?

Williams wanted to keep him for 1999 and beyond. Had he stayed at Williams in the BMW era I have no doubt more wins would have come. Sadly he went for the money at BAR.
When Reynard was dominating in CART and F3000 him joining a reynard designed BAR for 1999 seemed like a bald and good move.

JV is a great F1 driver 1996 debut year had a fantastic year 2nd overall I fink,1997 Champ, he went toe to toe with possibly the greatest F1 driver ever in MSC only too people i fink of gone toe to toe with MSC (Hakkiaion and Alonso)he also made F1 interseting to watch when he came in 1996

Jacques Villeneuve is one of the best race drivers ever! But he was unlucky in his career. He stayed so many years in B.A.R and when he lelt they made an excellent car. The same think happened with sauber. I would like to see him this year with bmw...

Jv is one of those rare people, who personifies what a real driver is. He had more talent in his little finger, than most of the driver shave today. He spoke out, and was loved and critisized(sp), and he didn´t take any shit. Uncompromizing, annoying as hell, but deeply devoted to the sport. He is way up there with drivers like Hunt, Rosberg and dare I say Farina?

Non, Il à aidé l'écurie BAR qui commencait, il a prit la décision de descendre. Je n'ai pas manqué une course et j'avoue avoir été frustré un tas de fois. Par contre, il était toujours premier de son écurie devant son coéquipier. Ca veut dire qu'il tirait le maximum de sa voiture. Quand t'as un chaudron comme char....tu peux-tu vraiment gagner quelque chose? Un tas de pilotes ont le talent en F1, mais c'est l'écurie la plus riche qui l'emporte.

Pantoute. Quand tu es bon, tu progresses. Prends Schumacher, il est arrivé chez ferrari, et il a remonté l'équipe. Villeneuve, c'est connu, il est paresseux techniquement, incapable de faire évoluer la voiture. Lache moi avec le fait d'etre 1er dans son equipe, ses coequipiers etaient tous des moumounnes. Il a écouté son B.S de manager Pollock, pi c'est ca qui l'a calé.
