I saw "Wizards" in the theatre in 1977 when it first came out. I loved it but when I tried to go back to see it again Star Wars had just premiered so 20th Century Fox pulled Wizards out of a lot of theatres so they could run SW instead.
It's a PG movie, but the battle scenes do show quite a lot of blood that is splashing, running and dripping, bullet wounds that rip bloody holes in people's chests, arrows in eyes, etc. For an animated, PG, 1977 film, it is quite violent. Imagine Kill Bill as an animated movie.
Wow! Kill Bill as an full-length animated movie? That would propbably get an NC-17. Thanks for telling me, because I'm planning on getting Wizards on DVD.
It opened a few blocks away from my high school when it first came out - and someone was passing out these really great looking WIZARDS mini posters (damn, I wish I still had one!) anyway, I cut school more than once to see it. My high school was an art school so EVERYONE was hooked on that movie. Vaughn Bode (who had accdentally killed himself around then) was the film's inspiration. Avatar was very loosely based on his Cheech Wizard (very loosely!) and Peace was his Cobalt 60...
Spoiler alert Spoiler alert: If you don't want to know the end don't read on:
Avatar makes it out okay meets up with Weahawk and Elenore (I think those are the names over a decade since I last saw this) Avat says he's got a few hundred years left makes some double auntantras and coments of a suggestive nature to the busty farie and they ride off into the sun set
Yes, this was a very enjoyable film I would even buy it, but he asked how does it end, not hey should I watch this. Don't ask a question if you don't want to hear the answer
Thanks for posting this!! (Though a spoiler warning for newbies would have been NICE!!) This is just a brilliant moment...and what a great line!!! (Right up there with "They've killed Fritz!")
sorry but- it DID comeout in 1977... most of us HAVE seen it... and there is more! Buy the DVD where the director talkes anout a sequel he never got to make!
Should have a warning about this, it ruins the movie for anyone seeing it the first time. All the build up and expecting a huge magical duel and the whole thing about how industry is evil..... Then Av pulls out a gun. Oh I love it! Thankyou!

Man we all were watching this flick expecting an magical battle of galatic porportions...and it was all just a gun shot. Blackwolf was killed by one of his own instruments of death (the German Luger)
Avatar (the little wizard guy) is now one of the most badass wizards of all time.

I was wanting to know. How violent are the battle scenes in Wizards?

A good video, but thanks to the lack of "Spoiler Alert", you ruined the end of the movie for me. Thanks a lot.

One of the best scenes in movie history.

Word. I wouldn't be surprised if George Lucas saw this as inspiration for the fight between Yoda and Count Duuka in Attack of the Clones.
MadScout 4 years ago
Back in 1977, Lucas saw the unfinished film and gave Bakshi some extra money to finish it.
desotowright 4 years ago
That's not really true. On a feature on the DVD, the film was supposed to called "War Wizards". Lucas wanted Bakshi to change the name.

More like Obi Wan and General Grievous.

"Wizards" may not have been as good as Bakshi's "American Pop/Lord of the Rings/Fire & Ice", but it was better, plotwise, than "Fritz the Cat".
Jal8919536 5 years ago
Fritz the Cat's plot wasn't that bad.

excuse me? were you responding to paxpaul?? if so he wasnt refering to fritz the cat
