Actually, it can be helpful in some situations. Not often, but there are times it's easier to blast the enemy than dodge them (particularly if you don't know where you're going - could you see him surviving that run without a gun, given that he got confused and spent a couple of minutes running around the bottom floor?)

Also, it helps to bring down snipers if you get a chance...they are most painful.

Of course it's easier to use a gun, but imo, the game is ment to be played without firing a gun (except when stopping the truck ofc). No runner should actually kill someone, 'tis n00bish.
