I'm Asian and I tried on eyelid tape just because I was curious about how I would look, and I felt so much more beautiful-- not because I felt "white", because I definitely looked Asian still, I just felt like i personally looked better. In Asia it's common to do the surgeries to look pretty PERIOD! That's about it, but in the USA there are so many different races interacting with each other that they'll begin to misunderstand why some asians do it. When I first watched the video,I was also shocked by the way Tyra 'attacked' her, but I watched it a couple more times and I understood why she was being so harsh. That's the problem with talk shows- they have to come to some definitive conclusion by the end of the show otherwise (in their minds) the topic will be rendered useless. Talk shows should be about analyzing and exposing people's lives, not trying to fix them in a 20 minute interview with some ditz.

I did watch that episode and I do have to say that I believe that asian woman did trick herself into believing that she didn't do it because she wanted to look more caucasian. She's been conditioned to see America's (mostly white people's) view on beauty. Had this asian woman grown up in Asia she probably wouldn't get this kind of surgery. When I first watched the video,I was also shocked by the way Tyra 'attacked' her, but I watched it a couple more times and I understood why she was being so harsh. She doesn't want anyone else to feel they have to change the way they look to fit in like she had to do to make a living, because she must have really felt like shit when she thought about it. I don't think she's trying to be superior, and it doesn't matter what education you have to be able to understand people and give good advice.

I think Tyra's nose-job says more about how she views herself than her hair. I respect that Tyra discusses race openly but she often uses her show to validate her own preconceptions as opposed to having an honest debate.
I think Tyra's overarching point was valid, in that living in a predominantly white society can eat away at a non whites identity, particularly at a young age. But, it is not Tyra's place to question that guests motives given the context.

Well I think you're wrong. I don't think the girl's reasons really "changed"... she just said that because she didn't want to admit what it really was. Tyra was being honest and just called the girl out for lying. That girl wasnt being truthful. She said that she did the eye surgery bcs her eyes were sagging and made her appear old, but she is in her early 20's. Come on now let us not be naive. She had the surgery bcs that is what is considered beautiful in her media. Truthfully, we all are presured by media standards of beauty. Leave Tyra alone, at least she admit it.

@moralsinker She admited that she felt out of place and unattractive around her peers who made fun of her eyes. Any idiot knows that experience influenced her to change her eye appearance. Just like when a person is made fun of or looked down on for having dark skin, which influence that person to bleach his or her skin..same difference. Something is wrong when a person risk their lives to change their appearance. That goes for her and Tyra.

@sweetQTified She admitted that she had the surgery because she thought it was more beautiful. She is being truthful, you can see that her eyelids are saggy in her before picture. Tyra said that she did it because she wanted to be white. It's two completely different reasons. And even though Tyra is 'admitting it', she didn't need to be so rude and interrupt the girl's every word.
