  • Bravo. Very very nice. but lose the cap :}

  • Wow, incredible job.

  • Incredible dude, keep it up!

  • outstanding version of Ravel - truly inspiring!

  • he IS associated with a gang. Its called Worlds Greatest Pianists. There are hundreds of thousands of wanna be's and groupies too.

  • you are absolutely amazing. incredibly inspiring. the world needs more music like this. wow.

  • amazing piece of music!

  • Blew me away, man.

    Great job.

  • WOW

  • I love Ravel. Thank you for great interpretation and expression...it is all in there. Thank you.

  • This is what heaven sounds like.

  • I remember seeing some of your early videos, which were honestly pretty bad. This however is stellar playing. Congratulations, this is an excellent rendition of this piece.

  • you can tell you love music you put your heart into it!..simply beautiful..Your truely amazing....

  • waouhhh splendid bravo - I bought the partition may be in 200 years from now I may play it like you ;-)

  • I like your honesty.

  • You touch me so much!!

  • Hey, great playing. First time hearing this Ravel piece.

  • Beautiful job man. One of my all time favorite Ravel pieces.

  • Beautiful! Your interpretation is very nice. One of my favorite pieces. I can't wait to start performing on camera and gain more repertoire.

  • i'm breathless.. wonderfully played.. really cheered me up.. fantastic.. your hands are truly blessed, take good care of them.. aaand =) can't wait to see you on stage some day! =)

  • man you play so clean why didnt you tune your piano before recording :D

  • How long did it take you to get to this level?

I'm trying to learn the Miroirs, but they're so hard U__U... a bit easier than Gaspard de la Nuit I think, but still so difficult.

    Amazing stuff :)

  • mmmm i like your phrasing

  • thanks for your beautiful interpretation.

  • You must have practiced this piece for who knows how long in order to play it so well. This is a very hard one to play. I'm going to check if you perform Oiseaux Tristes too. Thank you, PianoPlaya. Keep uploading more videos.

  • très beau !

  • This guy plays very well, and all that people can talk about is the way he dresses and his color of skin? it disgusts me that I can look at a sucky player who is white and see better comments on this individuals video than of this talented man.

    Keep playing!

  • I don't believe angela1894 could even play chopsticks let alone the fist bar of an advanced song such as this one!

  • This is a very difficult but awesome piece I have read through it atleast 50 times at a super slow tempo and eventhough I memorized some of it-it requires lots and lots of practice for every little phrase as well as technique adjusting to work with the speed that its supposed to be played at even then I still trip up and slow down sounding horrible compared to your performance (bows before your greatness)! I really want to know how long it took you to learn this song?

  • @NitroReviews

the question you have to ask yourself is the same question asked of ed norton in American History X --- is all this hate making things better for you? I would guess not. Racist douche

  • Angela is a dumb, racist cunt, don't listen to her. A few mistakes, yeah, but it's a tremendously difficult piece, and overall it was beautiful. Thumbs up. :)

  • @angela1894 ummmm... wow, not only do you come and criticize this performance of a VERY hard piece without even giving suggestions as to how he could better it, but you bring race into the picture. Go learn some manners. Incidentally, you have yet to post your version of this which I bet is amazing.

  • mistakes or not its good to see a brotha doing something positive. I dont give a fuck if hes wearing nothing but some scooby doo draws and crocs.

  • You play this wonderfully.

  • Wonderful!

  • @angela1894 lol is that your best? seriously, come back when you have something less retarded to say haha

  • @angela1894

he doesnt get a pass because he's black? do you automatically assume black people are all about gangs and have no reson to be part of classical music? ill admit a majority of gangs consist of black people and a majority of virtuosi are white, but do you really have to bring racism into classical music? leave this genre alone! your reasoning is unjustified and your arguements are nonsensical. go bullshit around somewhere else.

  • @angela1894 Should the rest of us give a "pass" to the insipid nature of your comments just because you are both racist and lack the self-awareness to even realize that? This is a VERY difficult piece, and he plays it quite well. Like Richter? No. But almost no one can. What he DOES do is really quite good for a non-professional. When you can do better, do post the results.

  • @angela1894 I am profoundly convinced that this man posted this video only in the hope that he could be compared to the masters. I think he knew that people would give a black pianist a chance and I also think that he posted this video thinking that his rendition was really bad.

    Psych.

No, seriously, thanks man for posting this video, it's good to hear other people than Argerich or Richter play Ravel, keep up the good work!

  • @angela1894 it's not a song, hon. it's a piece. :)

  • @angela1894 fuck you you bitch

  • @angela1894 First of all it is a PIECE not a song. This was a very nice interpretation and who cares if there are a couple of mistakes? We don't have to play up to the 'asian standard' (having no mistakes) This is a very hard piece to play, I would bet you couldn't even begin to try...

  • @kreeezle asian standard lol ....

  • Ravel indeed is the man.....you need excellent work my friend

  • Great sound!

  • clown.

  • i enjoyed it, thank you for posting!

"Ravel was the man, nuff said" - AGREED.

  • awesome song

  • @mikelebp1

Song ? A song ? You mean a song like Top Charts ?

Ha ha, let me say it's not a song, it's Music, Classical Music !

  • @pictureslover

    OK, then:

    Awesome piece (?)

  • Beautifully played, as usual.

  • wonderful!!!

  • Excellent!!! congratulations...bea

  • I just can't seem to play the part just before the Bmajor 4'th - F trill. The part where your hands play those chords next to those crazy arpeggios up and down the piano.

  • ahh too much on the very last note, but apart from that little point this was very good, much enjoyed

  • Excellent performance sir! Texture, dynamics, it was all there, not to mention your enviable accuracy. I would love to hear you play the toccata from "Le Tombeau de Couperin.

  • too damn awesome!!

  • outstanding!

  • amazing man,

  • Ces't magnifique!

  • Pięknie 6******

  • you surely understood impressionism:)

  • YYYYEEEESSSS!!!

that was great, thanks so much!

  • am i the only one who notices the guy IS wearing dress clothes (dinner jacket/collar shirt) and that the only overly casual touch is a cap?

  • Probably lol

  • I am jealous as all hell, you play FN great!

  • Just amazing. Congratulations, cause that's a wonderful interpretation. And I really like your style!

  • you are truely amazing... perfect sound&performance, i love your fingers! kiss you!

  • Marvelous Jon.

  • the most gangsta classical musician ever. nuff said.

  • Beautiful and delicate interpretation:D

  • how does this piece compare in terms of difficulty to jeux d'eau? i just finished jeux d'eau and am thinking about playing this next....

  • Jeux d'eau! would love to play it.... this one is awesome as well, I feel like Jeux has some CRAZY ass parts though haha.

  • This is the best version of "La Barque" I've ever heard. Who are you man ? Incredible !!!

  • impressive...this is a very tough piece

  • Thanks! Most enjoyable. With your 'power' you should do some Percy Grainger and Cyril Scott!

  • Beautiful interpretation and talent but really - you owe it to the quality of your performance to put on a tuxedo or dress shirt and stage the room with fresh flowers - elegance in music should be in the context of elegant surroundings. I just ask that you think about it. Your musical talent deserves a more esthetically pleasing visual treatment. Can you appreciate this? Thanks

  • i think it's kind of cool to be in street/normal dress...I agree elegance also mixes well with classical music, but I think it's a turn off because it gives off an air of elitism...I think people should understand commoners composed these works, not some rich, aristocratic folks, just normal dudes like u and me composed classical music to express really their everyday feelings.

  • Not really. The older classical artists, like Bach, did compose for aristocratic folks. Ravel didn't, but he wasn't a "commoner" either.

  • this is why i'm not a bigger fan of mozart or bach, there's something about Mozart that's so retrained

of course Beethoven came and knocked the world down with his music because he placed music above all else, i'd say his individuality was above all else. i love Beethoven for it.

  • To the person who insists that "you owe it to the quality of your performance to put on a tuxedo or dress shirt and stage the room with fresh flowers," I say you're wrong. It's only YouTube for heaven's sake! Give the guy a break and enjoy the jam, man!

  • Only YouTube?! :-) Back in the '50s, my piano teacher used to play concerts over the radio. Back then, the musicians were expected to wear a tux even on radio! My teacher explained that it wasn't as silly as it sounded since the tradition created a sense of occasion. Do we still need that tradition in 2009? I certainly don't, but I do understand people who still want it. If it stops them from enjoying the music, however, perhaps they should really be asking themselves why.

  • pardon me but am i the only person that notices HE IS WEARING A DINNER JACKET, COLLAR SHIRT, the only "casual" touch is the baseball cap. lol look again my friend!

  • @teramike11 He's got on a SUIT! Some guys feel naked wout their hats lol

  • Beautiful! Msieur. Ravel would be proud and pleased.... I know he is..... Congratulations and thank you so much

  • I love it how you all talk about how thuggish and gangster he is just because he's black... Even though that is total bullshit. You all assume because he's black that he is associated with a gang or some shit like that, which is totally ignorant. While obviously some black people are associated with gangs, this makes up an incredibly small percentage, and its not like white people don't participate in stuff like that. BTW, you're an amazing pianist

  • lol, akward way to say it. Yet, I tottaly agree, me being black and all, lol.

  • @ReclaimTheGlory Reclaim the glory: its equally wrong to say that hes an amazing pianist because of his colour. the piece is a killer, hes making a good attempt but its just not very good; these are facts.

maybe you haven't heard a good interpretation of this piece yet, in that case im gonna take everything back and strongly recommend you to watch andré laplante's interpretation.

  • @V1C2 "Just not very good" - How so? It's a perfectly competent interpretation!

Ravel comes through quite clearly here. It's like you're saying all those correctly played notes, and so all Ravel's writing, is somehow in vain, due to whatever it is that isn't pleasing you. Mystifying. Are you listening to appreciate a good time, generously provided by Ravel and PianoPlaya123, or are you just listening for whatever may be missing, as a way to engage yourself in music you couldn't value otherwise?

  • @crowdmaker Yes, no, of course the only way i could possibly enjoy ravel is by indulging in peoples' mistakes playing ravel. And while were on that level of valuable commentary; i think you are more mystified by the piece rather than the player.. right?

  • @V1C2 That approach to music is what I'm referring to. If you go into music with the notion it's a puzzle to solve, you're only playing games with yourself, with arbitrary rules of your choosing. Life's too short for abstraction; just enjoy it all! Here, Ravel was just painting musical portraits of his friends, the way a painter like David Hockney would, but as a composer. The project was rather touching, and this one in particular is a little sad. Ravel looked into a mirror, and saw this...

  • @crowdmaker youve digressed

  • @ReclaimTheGlory Haha, and for all you know his parents make more than all of yours. This isn't the 80s, people.

And geez, Andre Watts got here long ago. Black concert pianists aren't new anymore. (Though I did sort of stand out at the International Keyboard Institute concerts last week, but hey, what can you do...)

  • Gorgeous interpretation!

  • What kind of piano is this, please? Beautiful tone.

  • You are so awesome!!!

  • Definitely was the man...... his orchestration was brilliant... I love this..... so perfect cambz.

  • You don't see too many African Americans playing this style. Very impressive to say the least. 5 Stars!!!

  • lol. Good one. He's wearing a sports cap too. Not many people wear those and play Ravel.

  • No... Not at all haha. True thugs sport jerseys and bust ravel!

  • this is so good you must be a little bit French...

  • Comment removed

  • You are an exceptional pianist. Technique and feeling both there completely. I'd like to hear you do some baroque or classical though or something "aggressive modern".

  • Very very good job!! Will you play Debussy prelude?

  • excellent !!!! i enjoyed this clip-ravel is very dreamy like debuzy .

  • What do you think about liszt?

  • I think he has a nice ass.

  • I've heard multiple recordings of this song, and can honestly say this sounds as good as any I've heard. I thought the voicing of the melody, especially in the parts like the intro, is actually quite technically demanding, and he pulls it off nicely.

  • get out! This is as good as any recording I've heard. You don't know what you're talking about, and you don't know what TECHNIQUE is.

  • that was quite delicious lol

  • Really good, man. I enjoyed that a lot.

  • Cool, inspiring stuff....

  • Bardzo śliczna muzyka kompozytora dawnego żyjącego Ravel Miroirs granie bardzo dobre.

  • WOW!!!! SUPERB!!!!!

  • wow. thanks.

  • Increible...magnífico... sin palabras

  • 5*****!!!

  • M A G N I F I C E N T !

  • Ravel was the man, nuff said!

    I like that.

  • very impressed by how you have progressed over the last couple of years, this is not an easy piece, and you manage to play it so beautiful. congrats!

  • Yeah, I remember how his music had like no feeling to it at all. Now it's like full of it.

  • wow so liquid clear. You could see the boat going up and down on the ocean

  • u r awesome, dude. how do u play without fucking it all up? that's how i play. i fuck it all up. lmao

  • Amazing performance. I hope to be able to play this piece with such accuracy, color, and consistency like you. You truly are a talented pianist.

  • You are amazing! Please continue to share your beautiful work with us :)

  • Very well done. I feel that your palying has gained in maturity and variety of tone color in the past couple of years. I think you've got what it takes to have a CAREER.

  • nice job you got me into this music with your videos,an i enjoy all your videos.stay up

  • this piece is supposed to be swamped in pedal. so long as you can feel the fluidity of the "waves" then objective complete (give or take, not the only objective). any less pedal would ruin the fluidity. Well done Cambry!

  • Very, Very nice.

  • You can play with less pedal and you'll sound even batter. Bravo.

  • Bravo! Sublime interpretation! The only criticism I really have is that you seem to have a few discordant unisons. When's the last time you've tuned your piano?

  • They're in the music, it's Ravel after all, and he was influenced heavily by Jazz.

  • No, discordant unisons = a piano key of which its individual strings aren't completely in tune.

  • Yeah, seems you're right after all, there is many out of tune notes, but there is also quite a few minor seconds in the piece.

  • my favorite part of this whole video are the runs at 5:30 and thank you for posting this piece is amazing and your interpretation of it matched perfectly

  • Wow I really like your interpretation!!!

  • Your playing has matured a lot! This is a tough one!

  • Arabesque! A little bit, don't you think?

  • close,i love arabesque

  • EXCELLENT phrasing. this piece is ALL about how you phrase, and you nailed it. Thanks for posting this, you're setting an example of how it SHOULD be done!

  • great video!!!thankyou!

  • Wow! That was amazing- I love this piece. (My favorite from Miroirs) Do you play Gaspard de la Nuit??

    Ravel kicks ass.

  • Amazing performance! This is a beautiful, delicate piece.

  • Thanks! that was wonderful to watch! Did you also learn Alborata? I'd love to see you play that.

  • yay Ravel is one of my recent favorites. Your interpretation sounds really good!

  • Wow. Your hands are beautiful Mr. Cambry. What a wonderful gift you share with the world. Thank you and best wishes.

  • Beautifully executed. It gave me the impression of gentle waves washing up on a sandy beach with the occasional gust of breeze that caused larger ripples, while every now and then a shoal of small fish broke the surface in a feeding frenzy at waters edge. I loved it and thanks for sharing.

    In tune

    Lalita

  • Beautiful!!! You are an artist!

  • Mind blowing performance, Jonathan! I'm inspired to listen to more Ravel.

  • Do I need to come down there and force you to play that Liszt? =) Just kidding, I keep checking your page for it because I'm learning it too, and I'd love to hear your interpretation.

  • World class, no need for a recording studio, as it may lose that impressionistic touch almost jazz here. Unlike some versions it is continuously interesting. Ondine sometime?

  • I'm in love with this piece; but I'm sure your playing has PLENTY to do with it as well =).

I'm so glad to have a supremely talented friend like you <3.

  • That piece is really hard and you have it under control. Very impressive.

  • Man, lil bro. Every time I watch this, I'm amazed to see how far you've come. I still haven't received my hat!

  • The technical difficulty of the songs you choose amazes me. Very well-played, man.

  • Well done PianoPlaya123. Can you play the next one too? >..>.. / >..>..

  • So where's the Liszt :)

  • The weather knocked my piano out of tune, so I have to wait until Saturday lol

  • A superb reading of a very difficult piece. Congratulations on yet another job well done and all the best in your future endeavors. -f

  • Mr Cambry, you are awesome and next to perfect as always. But please get some better recording equipment. I feel we are missing some of it. It's good, but it's not perfect. And I know the Pro's charge heavily. For now I can live with this, because you are so good. Do you not have a professional recording contract yet? That I cannot believe.

  • Thanks for the comment, but the audio that's not on YouTube is way better, it loses a lot of quality on this site, my equipment is actually pretty decent.. not pro but it's good.

  • Great stuff!!!!

    我非常喜歡你的演奏!!

  • OMg you have improved much more since the last time you posted.. or compared to your older videos

    great stuff

  • welcome to the darkside my man!

    :)

  • you are piano master :)

  • Bravo!!!

  • Great stuff. Love Ravel and your playing of this.

  • Great! Now go play Ondine. This is a bit of precursor to that in a sense, with pretty wild arpeggios. But it has pretty rough chordal work.

Or Le Gibet. Deceptive with the sheet music, it is incredibly difficult to play well.

    Any way great job!

  • Also, in your profile you say that you played Liszt' "Jeux D'ea de la Villa D'este" in a concet...is there any chance of you recording this?

  • Hey thanks a lot for the suggestion on the arpeggios, I should definitely apply that because that's the best part of the piece to me. Also thanks for reminding me about the Liszt, I will record that on Thursday, I forgot about it until now!

  • Right, because I've always felt that moment where the left hand arpeggios collide with the right hand tremolo was like waves crashing around the "barque" symbolized in the title. So I always re-pedal at those moments to really make the resulting downwards arpeggios sound very unique. Anyways, looking forward to the Liszt, it's one of my favourite pieces, and I am learning it at the moment.

  • Great job! My only suggestion involves the sections where the minor arpeggios rise in the left hand against the right hand tremolos. This leads to a dynamic forte of downwards-descending arpeggios. I would pedal between points, because the sounds seem to blur in a dissonant way in your video, I'm not sure if you're doing that. But that's just my preference. Also the piano sounds slightly tinnier than before. Need a tuning?

  • Your gesture at the end was quite well done too.

  • Thanks man! I didn't even know I did that lol

  • That was damn fine.
