Their command of the sea's is so secure it would be nearly impossible to change, Nato naval forces are not only more numerous and far more advanced to start with but in any race their lead would simply increase due to the larger economic and industrial base of the Nato nations, China is simply to far behind to catchup and the US, UK, France and Germany would never surrender control of the sea lanes.

The strong economic base you're referring to in the West is collapsing, while China's growth only increased during the recession. The industrial base you're referring to actually lies on the chinese soil. China's population is 500 million larger than all Nato countries' population combined, their potential is unimaginable. Their navy's size has reached the limits of former Imperial Japanese Navy.

China has DF21 anti-ship ballistic missile, it cannot be intercepted in any other way but the China's own laser-interception system. It's role is designated as "carrier killing missile". Now, NONE western fleet would be able to survive an concentrated DF21 missile barrage. So much for the western dominance ^^
@OnlyLifeMatters, Are you seriously arguing the point that a Chinese missle could not be shot down by western defence systems? Western fleets ARE the dominant force on the worlds oceans, the DF21 could probably do significant damage to a naval taskforce but totally defeat one, i doubt that unless it was nuclear tipped but my understanding is that it isnt, its designed to sink carriers only, The radars on the New Zumwalt and Daring class destroyers of the US and Royal Navys are world beating!
@TheCharlie359 DF21 barrage can be launched against an invasion fleet by using multiple launch platforms. And given the extreme speed of an ballistic missile (Mach 10, high-hypersonic) falling directly on top of the fleet, there are no counter measures that could keep up with it, not any that are shipborne. This is admitted by Western powers as well, so you may as well drop this resistance of yours.
Submarines will of course be safe, but they're not much of use in invasion operation.
@OnlyLifeMatters, Your argument is based around the idea that the US and her Allies would try and invade China, anyone with even limited knowledge of military affairs knows this would simply never take place, the war would go nuclear before any "invasion" fleet could be put together. You say that the WEST acknowledges defenses are useless against ballistic missles, then why are the US, Japan, France, South Korea and UK both deploying an ABM capability in their fleets?

China cant put a battlegroup into the Atlantic like the US /UK / France can in the Pacific, at least for the moment.
@TheCharlie359 China has 4 LHDs and 3 aircraft carriers underway with options for more with world's second largest ever-modernizing fleet as support and world's largest submarine fleet. After their completion, China has better readiness than what UK and France possess. And with Dong-Feng 21 (under second artillery command?), they also have the potent to disable world's largest fleet, the USN instantly when they enter inside PLA's defensive line.
@OnlyLifeMatters,China maybe constructing LHD's but there is NO evidence aircraft carrier construction is underway only that an aspiration to aquire them exsists along with a test platform for evaluation and future training, China's submarine fleet is with a very few exeptions obsolete, remember the USN pacific fleet alone could feild over 500 modern aircraft and thousands of the most advanced ship borne missles in the world, plus around 30 SSNs, China could inflict huge damage but not defeat!

@TheCharlie359 The thing is that China won't attack anyone (for except Taiwan), so China doesn't require a fleet like USN, it only requires a fleet capable of intercepting USN. The scenario of war between the West and China would be an attack targeted against China, and with DF21 and their navy they could really cope with such invasion. Type 089 and Type 085 are the aircraft carriers that China has underway. Granted, Type 085 is estimated to enter in service only around 2020.
@OnlyLifeMatters, Ive since done a little research, the carriers your referring to are SPECULATED to be under or near to beginning construction, there is however NO conclusive proof that this is underway, they are also simply Chinese derivatives of the Varyag and Ulyanovsk, the same rumours have been around for over a decade, dont put to much stock into them becoming reality! Official Chinese sources say that their first carrier would only be a CVL of around 25,000 - 30,000 tons.
@TheCharlie359 True, they're speculated. But it's a known fact that China possesses already two large aircraft carriers, Minsk and Varyag. Even though it's obvious that Minsk isn't being utilized anymore. However, they have completely researched those vessels, and I can guarantee you that they didn't spent millions to buy them and then research them just because they were bored. They're going to build large carriers and as the PLA command has said, they're going to build carriers. In plural.

As for Chinese capabilitys making an incursion into her waters impossible, thats not true, much more difficult and dangerous but still possible.

@OnlyLifeMatters, Firstly let me make it clear the West im referring to is NATO and her allies. Their command of the sea's is so secure it would be nearly impossible to change, Nato naval forces are not only more numerous and far more advanced to start with but in any race their lead would simply increase due to the larger economic and industrial base of the Nato nations, China is simply to far behind to catchup and the US, UK, France and Germany would never surrender control of the sea lanes.

The strong economic base you're referring to in the West is collapsing, while China's growth only increased during the recession. The industrial base you're referring to actually lies on the chinese soil. China's population is 500 million larger than all Nato countries' population combined, their potential is unimaginable. Their navy's size has reached the limits of former Imperial Japanese Navy.

@OnlyLifeMatters, Its navy at present is irrelevant, The EU fleets combined are twice as powerful as it alone without the rest of Nato, as for its industrial base its potential is great however that does not translate into dominance, EU and US economies are now built around high spec technology and services yes, that does not mean we could not once again meet a huge increase in our manufacturing capacity if we chose to, the biggest employers in China are western so the ball remains in our court

@OnlyLifeMatters, Also in the modern age numbers dont matter as much, technology, industry and military technology are highly automated in the West, China's economy would have continued to grow as the global meltdown was caused primarily by the US housing markets collapse and Western, principly US/UK banks exposure to that led to a lack of confidence in London and New York which had huge ramifactions for the global economy, the recession will end and the West will recover, its inevitable!

Anyways, EU fleets aren't serving under one command. It's a major drawback. Also, China has imitated the western technology onto their ships, what gives you the reason to presume that they can't perform great as well? Like, the Type 054A frigate? It's excellent. Or Type 071 LPD? It's excellent as well. Song -class submarines that humiliated Kitty Hawk and her escorts in '06?

@OnlyLifeMatters, I probably am biased, i believe in western dominace of the oceans, working for BAE gives me knowledge civies simply dont have, i can assure you as good as you think PRC navy is it is not a match for the Nato fleets in technological terms, that may change but it aint gonna happen soon, never said the US fleet was the best, biggest yes, best no!

China has DF21 anti-ship ballistic missile, it cannot be intercepted in any other way but the China's own laser-interception system. It's role is designated as "carrier killing missile". Now, NONE western fleet would be able to survive an concentrated DF21 missile barrage. So much for the western dominance ^^

@OnlyLifeMatters, Are you seriously arguing the point that a Chinese missle could not be shot down by western defence systems? Western fleets ARE the dominant force on the worlds oceans, the DF21 could probably do significant damage to a naval taskforce but totally defeat one, i doubt that unless it was nuclear tipped but my understanding is that it isnt, its designed to sink carriers only, The radars on the New Zumwalt and Daring class destroyers of the US and Royal Navys are world beating!

@TheCharlie359 DF21 barrage can be launched against an invasion fleet by using multiple launch platforms. And given the extreme speed of an ballistic missile (Mach 10, high-hypersonic) falling directly on top of the fleet, there are no counter measures that could keep up with it, not any that are shipborne. This is admitted by Western powers as well, so you may as well drop this resistance of yours.
Submarines will of course be safe, but they're not much of use in invasion operation.

@OnlyLifeMatters, Your argument is based around the idea that the US and her Allies would try and invade China, anyone with even limited knowledge of military affairs knows this would simply never take place, the war would go nuclear before any "invasion" fleet could be put together. You say that the WEST acknowledges defenses are useless against ballistic missles, then why are the US, Japan, France, South Korea and UK both deploying an ABM capability in their fleets?

@OnlyLifeMatters, China at present is NOT capable of projecting military power on a global scale conventionally, until she comes into possession of large numbers of capable aircraft carriers she will remain a regional power, albiet a major one and not able to compete with even European (French / British) fleets at sea. China cant put a battlegroup into the Atlantic like the US /UK / France can in the Pacific, at least for the moment.

After their completion, China has better readiness than what UK and France possess. And with Dong-Feng 21 (under second artillery command?), they also have the potent to disable world's largest fleet, the USN instantly when they enter inside PLA's defensive line.

@OnlyLifeMatters,China maybe constructing LHD's but there is NO evidence aircraft carrier construction is underway only that an aspiration to aquire them exsists along with a test platform for evaluation and future training, China's submarine fleet is with a very few exeptions obsolete, remember the USN pacific fleet alone could feild over 500 modern aircraft and thousands of the most advanced ship borne missles in the world, plus around 30 SSNs, China could inflict huge damage but not defeat!

@OnlyLifeMatters, A future war with China would only contest her access to vital SLOC not to defeat the nation itself, as i have said at present China is NOT capable of defeating any of the major Western powers on the high sea's, im not resisting your argument, im dismissing it as your interpretaion of Sea Power is flawed, the West wouldnt use its control of the oceans to launch an attack, rather to isolate China and bring her to her knees economically, this goal is completly acheivable by Nato.

@TheCharlie359 The thing is that China won't attack anyone (for except Taiwan), so China doesn't require a fleet like USN, it only requires a fleet capable of intercepting USN. The scenario of war between the West and China would be an attack targeted against China, and with DF21 and their navy they could really cope with such invasion. Type 089 and Type 085 are the aircraft carriers that China has underway. Granted, Type 085 is estimated to enter in service only around 2020.

@OnlyLifeMatters, Ive since done a little research, the carriers your referring to are SPECULATED to be under or near to beginning construction, there is however NO conclusive proof that this is underway, they are also simply Chinese derivatives of the Varyag and Ulyanovsk, the same rumours have been around for over a decade, dont put to much stock into them becoming reality! Official Chinese sources say that their first carrier would only be a CVL of around 25,000 - 30,000 tons.

@TheCharlie359 True, they're speculated. But it's a known fact that China possesses already two large aircraft carriers, Minsk and Varyag. Even though it's obvious that Minsk isn't being utilized anymore. However, they have completely researched those vessels, and I can guarantee you that they didn't spent millions to buy them and then research them just because they were bored. They're going to build large carriers and as the PLA command has said, they're going to build carriers. In plural.

@OnlyLifeMatters, You also make the point perfectly, China's carriers are most defeinatly going to be based on Soviet designs, themselves poor and obsolete, yes they will be highly modified and updated to modern standards but at their core they will still be built around outdated doctrines, the Chinese naval renassiance is impressive i'll grant you that but its hardly enough to challenge the US or the West, and may i remind you that a weapon system has yet to be invented that cant be defeated.

@TheCharlie359 And while I do admit that China has not offensive capabilities due their defensive doctrine and naval deterrent, no navy could ever invade Chinese waters. Firstly because of their numerous modernized fleet, and secondly (even more importantly) because of Dong Feng 21 defense system.

@OnlyLifeMatters, That China will eventually build aircraftcarriers is a well known fact, the point is she does not have them yet and by the time she does, the US, UK, France and India will all have new large fleet carriers in service (that is if France builds PA2) Russia to is planning her next generation of carriers so China will be part of a much larger carrier club than presently exsists.

@OnlyLifeMatters,Add to that the fact that in her region alone (Pacific) South Korea, Japan and Australia will all posess small carriers of various types and the USA will begin feilding the G.R.Fords in theatre from China's east and India, her new fleet carriers from the west and Chinese room for manuover is curtailed both diplomatically and militarily. As for Chinese capabilitys making an incursion into her waters impossible, thats not true, much more difficult and dangerous but still possible.

@TheCharlie359 My point was that IF some ships managed to survive the onslaught of Chinese defense systems - that I really question - , the amount of hardcore chinese land forces would annihilate the rest of the shore party. Attack to PRC - no matter how grande - would be a suicide mission, and of course, neither could China invade USA. Maybe China could brake down the US military, but they could never control the american people. Continuing...

@OnlyLifeMatters, Ive already said the US and her allies would not try to invade China, your right in sayin it would be futile, but a western fleet COULD enter and operate in Chinese waters if they chose, theres not much China could do to counter that other than launch a huge attack that would provoke a much bigger conflict, something i doubt China would be willing to risk, as for breaking American military power, it aint ever gonna happen, the US is far more powerful and competant.

@TheCharlie359 That's my point, exactly. For someone who works in the defense industry, overlooking the Dong-Feng 21 defense system sounds extremely arrogant. It's not invincible, of course not, but currently no countermeasure can intercept it. PLAAF also introduced the J-20 stealth fighter last month.
USA the only superpower? Considering that they're completely dependant on import and China, that's a bold claim. EU is the largest economy in the world, USA is merely one superpower among many.
