I think it's fundamentally wrong that the LHC shutdown for CHRISTmas.  Part of the LHC's mission is to explore the big bang and possibly destroy the idea of God I'd hope. It just wasn't good taste nor fitting to shutdown a potentially God ending machine in the name of Christ. no one is sabotaging the LHC. when you approach the speed of light things start to come apart. they cannot overcome that "fact". I dont understand why they are sending the protons so fast? we are fairly certain light speed can be reached but only by approaching and then jumping to light speed. remember in Star Wars, they always say "make the jump" to light speed? No particle WITH MASS can go the speed of light. MASSLESS particles (eg. a photon ... of light) can and do travel the speed of light.

Within the context of our current understanding to travel > c we would need to manipulate the space/time manifold on which particles travel

The reason they are 'sending protons so fast' has little to do with their speed, and everything to do with the energy they posses within the beam. The faster they go the faster their kinetic energy.

In normal day life we convert matter to energy (eg. eating, driving, etc.), particle accelerators essentially convert energy to matter (as we are trying to detect new particles of matter). Recall the basic equation E = mc^2, it works both ways, in that m = E/c^2

We are looking for particles whose masses are larger then the current limits of production in our currently most powerful particle accelerator (Tevatron, which can circulate beams at 450GeV for a collision energy of 900GeV).

Looking back again at M = E/c^2 we are limited to particles whose energy falls within that range.

The LHC will produce beams with 7TeV (thus 14TeV collision energy), which will allow us to see particles heavier then about 150GeV (yes it gets confusing in that they describe the mass of a particle in terms of energy).
