I agree, i saw this movie when i was 15 after i rented 12 Monkeys and saw the hypnotic trailer and hearing great things about it that it's a mix of Sci-fi/fantasy/comedy and i rent it as a double feature with City of Lost Children, i gotta say both movies left an impression on me and i became a Gilliam fan as i rented his other stuff and Monty Python movies on video that year in 96.
Do you think this movie is similar to Time Bandits, 1984, V For Vendetta, Blade Runner, Fifth Element and even Fight Club? i've heard people have compared this to Fight Club, how so are they similar?
@Johnlindsey289 Yes, it's a mix of all those movies and it has shades of A Clockwork Orange in it as well. That's interesting about the Fight Club comparison. The only similarity i can really see is that they both have central characters who decide to rebel against an oppresive system that they feel has had them in chains for far too long.
Do you think the terrorists are the same, do you think Harry Tuttle is similar to Tyler, do the main guys hate society and do you think both were crazy at the end or schizo?
@Johnlindsey289 Well the terrorist organizations are similar in that they want to upset/destroy the society/government, by spreading chaos, anarchy and destruction. I think Tuttle was a real person myself, but i supppose he could be interpreted as an alternate personality kind of like Tyler Durden. Ed Norton's character was obviously crazy all along but i think that Sam Lowry was driven insane by the end of the movie. This is a very influential film that owes a lot to Metropolis (1927) and 1984.
This film is influential you know in inspiring Dark City, Gattaca, Matrix, Inception, Minority Report, A.I., Metropolis 2001, Fight Club, Natural Born Killers, Donnie Darko, Fifth Element, and so many more movies for years.
OK guys, this film presents a Dystopian society and Nineteen Eighty Four is the seminal Dystopic work. It covered all the elements that make a Dystopian text in a way that no other text has matched since and probably never will do. This film is great because, unlike a majority of Dystopic texts, it is not just an appropriation of Nineteen Eighty Four, Terry Gilliam admits to not having read it. And just because it's funny doesn't mean it isn't a Dystopia, it just parodies instead of attacks.
@AWolfMusic actually, while Nineteen Eighty Four is an excellent book & wonderful example of dystopian society, I think Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley is actually the more relevant, inclusive & accurate depiction.

Well they are similar if you think about it but more of a parody! does Brazil also remind you of Time Bandits and Blade Runner with the V For Vendetta graphic novel?
Great Sci-fi/fantasy/comedy! the best of Gilliam's superb trilogy of fantasy movies that started with Time Bandits then this and went out with a bang on Adventures of Baron Munchasen.
I also disagree with you. 1984 has nothing on this. They deal with slightly similar things, but Brazil is timeless. They're also totally different in their tone and execution.
Return I will to old Brazil

Truly, no other film can compare with this movie. It's a classic against which all other classics are measured.

I completely disagree. It's just a rip off of 1984 and We

Yes it's like 1984 but a little like Time Bandits and City of Lost Children at times with a hint of Blade Runner you know.

1984 will always remain the best book in it's genre, as Brazil is for sure a milestone on it's own in the movie bussines
