And yes, indeed, there are still houses there and people that refuse to leave! EVEN THOUGH the ground they stand on is on fire! I though this place looked familar :D

A lot of things about the movie were based off this town, what other town can there be really? What other town out there in the USA that has a damn mine burning under it for more then 40 years?

The cop in the movie mentioned about a mine burning under the town, and in certain points in the movie you see ash fall from the sky as if something is burning. Not to mention those fanatics that dressed up as miners and carried that canary around, all of that was inspired by Centralia.

@HECTOR2006ELPASO well i heard this town has alot of coal stored under ground. actually the grade that burns the hottest. one day they set the coal on fire by accident and its been burning since. i think that was somewhere around 50-60 years ago (ill check) and it will burn untill all of the coal is gone. fire started in 1962 and is still burning strong. wow thats 48 years.

Nathan Ave and Brookhaven Hospital are based on Brookhaven, Penn. So this is not the real Silent Hill. It's based on various areas, not West Virginia.
